Hello I want to make everyone aware of red pandas. What are red pandas? Red pandas are small arboreal mammals native to the forests of the Himalayas. They are loosely related to ferrets, weasels, raccoons, etc. but are so far removed they occupy their own taxonomic family. They are very remotely related to giant pandas and share some convergent adaptations due to a similar diet. What do red pandas do? Eat! Red pandas spend as much as 2/3 of their waking time foraging for their main food, bamboo leaves. However they don't just eat bamboo, they have a powerful sweet tooth and will viciously attack any fruits they find. They are also known to eat birds' eggs and any small animals they can catch off-guard. Red pandas are very skilled climbers and have thick claws that give them a very strong grip on tree bark. Also, interestingly, their paw pads are covered over in soft fur to keep their toes warm when walking on snow. OMG! They're so cute!! Can I get one as a pet?? Probably not! Unless you want an animal that has peculiar temperature and dietary needs, requires lots of space, and probably can't be house trained. I've heard of them being kept as pets in Nepal but that's their native range so it's probably a different story there. That said, red pandas are relatively easy to keep in zoos, so your local zoo probably has some! There are also a select few zoos worldwide (I know of one in Wellington, NZ and another in Chatanooga, TN) that book "close encounters" with red pandas so you can spend an hour hanging out with them and feeding them treats. They do this to acclimate them to strangers so they don't get nervous about vet visits and such. Red pandas are endangered Almost. They're recognized as vulnerable by the IUCN, largely due to poaching (for their desirable fur) and habitat destruction (by grazing livestock). Many zoos are participating in programs to breed and raise red pandas, often resorting to hand-raising the cubs when parents are unable to provide adequate care. You can probably help by donating to the Red Panda Network or something. Or by patronizing your local zoo. What do baby red pandas look like? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOH27QkTVv4 Do red pandas like apples? Yes, they love apples! Do red pandas like grapes? Yes, they love grapes! Do red pandas like hammocks? Yes, they love hammocks. Do red pandas have giant floofy tails? Some do! Are you sufficiently aware of red pandas? They sound kind of like birds. Adults don't make much noise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIWEfkFFj-M&t=210s (The actual vocalization is around 3:30 and rather faint) Cubs at play will get pretty squeaky though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNsnb_mryjA

PartyCrown posted:katamari told me that red pandas are red because they only eat strawberries Pretty sure this is false as red pandas are a different hue of red to strawberries. Also they are known to primarily eat bamboo leaves. I'm sure they would love to eat nothing but strawberries if given the opportunity though.

? pretty sure you need to screw the opposite sex to get offspring. Unless red pandas are different, in which case that's probably just how it's meant to be.

Like those parthenogenetic lizards. Anyway I don't care how red panda babies get made because the results are adorable.

Yeah that video looks kind of weird and staged to me. I think they'd make decent pets, though you'd have to pet-proof your house somewhat. And they'd probably go stir crazy indoors? And you'd have to completely enclose your yard because they can climb anything. But look at this lil guy.

It costs like $300 to book an encounter anyway so you may as well file it under expensive vacation ideas. Short of that they are most active in the early morning, or feeding time.
