I am kinda liking this show. Mainly because the script is challenging a lot of the aspects that you don't often see in this sort of thing - in particular the tension between having fun and being successful, and also the force of peer pressure. Still I suspect that by the end this will all fall by the wayside and they'll reach the nationals by the power of friendship or whatever.

Well, only a minority of women go to university in Japan, and in any case she would be separated from her high school friends. Fangz fucked around with this message at 20:14 on Apr 15, 2015 |

Davincie posted:i haven't actually seen it, but i was under the impression kanon and clannad were the most melodramatic depressing type of anime imaginable I suppose you can make the case that those shows take things to such extremes of 'sad girls dying of plot cancer in the rain' that it isn't affecting any more. Meanwhile something as grounded as 'all your dreams are crumbling into dust because your classmates can't be bothered' hits much closer to home. I feel like a pattern is emerging these days: anime adapted from novels (not light novels) are actually good. Well, Eccentric Family, Shinsekai Yori, and Tatami Galaxy fit the pattern anyway.

I think the social dynamics amongst the band members are one of the most interesting things in the show. This episode added to that a lot. (Last episode was rather weak in my mind because I was worried that that aspect was going away.) Now I understand why there is resentment over Kousaka potentially going for the solo trumpet role, given Kaori's efforts last year, when before it just read as jealousy. Also we know what Natsuki's deal is, now. I'm perfectly fine with Midori never getting an episode. Something like Shirobako already shows that really they don't need to particularly focus on the 'main group' at all. Fangz fucked around with this message at 17:14 on May 20, 2015 |

Yeah, also it seems like Kumiko has become complacent over her euphonium role - especially with her depression over Aoi leaving, while Natsuki has become invigorated over it.

Small things I liked: Reina is so intense she downloaded a flashlight app for her phone for this night, but she didn't consider reasonable shoes Both of them had remembered the notes to that duet off by heart

Yes, the only interpretation I can have of a Shuichi end is that it would be intentionally tragic, showing how as time passes our dreams crumble and we settle for whatever is safe and familiar and dull. Fast forward 20 years and housewife Kumiko cleans a cold and silent flat and finds a rusting euphonium beneath a pile of mouldy boxes. She tries to play it but could make no sound. She throws it out. The end.

While Hazuki might believe that 'a job of a tuba is support', it's not necessarily a healthy attitude at the end of the day because it feels like she's sort of repressing her personal sense of disappointment by pushing that expectation on to others.

I would say the theme of her character arc is "there's always next year", rather than just suppressing her disappointment. Life isn't just about instant gratification. That might be the lesson she needs to learn, but I'm not convinced that she learnt it.

Clarste posted:Didn't she learn it too well already? They chastised her for not considering freshman prodigies next year, and therefore she needs to keep practicing regularly instead of just assuming she'll magically be better by next year. They did tell her that but it didn't stick until she played with the others and got the idea that her job was support. (That is to say, when she was rewarded with an instant evidence of making progress.) She also was the one who was most impatient about the audition. Of course the question now is whether she will keep on practicing now that she is out of the competition team. Fangz fucked around with this message at 16:55 on Jun 5, 2015 |

Maybe Taki reasoned that if the band wasn't able to put aside such feelings in this situation, then no, they didn't deserve to win. Also, interesting vote divide at the end of the day. Significant that Shuichi did not vote for Reina? EDIT: Also I suspect that deep down, the band knew that Reina was better even before the auditions - Ribbon-girl certainly knew. So not doing it blind would not have changed things. People would have pretended to not know the difference, while Ribbon-girl would have certainly recognised Kaori's playing.
