Which episode is that?

I really need to rewatch Utena, I don't think I've seen it since the original DVD's came out in like the early 00's.
i forget the episode but the gag is that arrows point to every single piece of symbolism. most of them are phallic imagery. the main villain is surrounded by big-rear end cacti and one of his henchmen walks in with a tiny little baby cactus and like fifteen arrows appear just in case you didn't get it.

He'll be an underpaid but perfectly competent investment banker. He'll swallow his pride and go drinking with his boss twice a week, and after ten years on the job he'll 'drunkenly' mention a promotion. His boss will laugh and tell him to ask him again in another ten years. Shuichi goes home and eyes a rope.

Not today, he thinks. Not today.

Both attitudes are wrong. Never watch with pre-conceptions, for they will only harm your understanding.

define 'specifically a romance,' because people are so weird about anime genres that once something has explicit romance it gets labelled one

like, gurren lagann totally has tons of romantic elements and makes a big thematic point about it, but would you call it a 'romance' anime? and i mean, the only couple that's together at the end are dayakka and kittan's sister,

not that i'd want him to end up with kumi, god no, but he's a neat character to have around. He isn't a bad guy, really, he's just kind of default Boy.

I can't say that. she's still a selfish little asskisser who threw the entire band into anarchy and wasted valuable time they don't have to spend simply because she wanted it her way.

now, that makes her a convincing teenager, but I can't say it redeems her as a person. if anything, it means they did a good job making her a selfish asskissser.
I don't think doing something bad makes her an irredeemable person. It's high school drama, it's not like she killed anybody.

Not to mention I think it goes beyond 'asskissing.' Unlike the rollercoaster ride that is whatever Kumiko and Reina have going on, she's pretty blatantly gay, or at least bi. She is clearly interested in Kaori. Social stigmatization of something that's a very core part of who you are + the uncertainty that obviously comes with a teenager can pretty quickly turn 'man that girl's cute' into an obsession, and an obsession can quickly turn into, well, what happened here.

Not that I think this show's really going to get into that even if it does go the Kumirei route, but it makes sense.

Yeah, he mentions that he's never managed a high school band before, doesn't he?

He's also shown to be pretty awkward with people in general during that weird conversation he has with that couple at the shrine. Drama like this probably isn't really his speed, or something he's equipped to handle. He keeps deferring to the students when it comes up. Heck, the first thing he did was ask them what they wanted to do.

One thing to note is that neither of those words is usually used in a 'confession' scene, 'suki/daisuki' (lit. 'I really like you') is much more common.
Well, the framing of the conversation was pretty roundabout, too. They say that it's a confession of love, but neither of them actually says 'I love you.'
