Apparently what I missed from earlier this week is that she was asking about shows with Lesbian protagonists but that aren't a romance, just lesbians doing cool stuff. So I'm even more stumped than I was to start with.

Then perhaps try G-Witch. Yes the romance is there but there's also lesbians piloting giant killbots in duels.

Could always try one of Noir, Madlax or El Cazador, though they're going to be disappointed if they want both undeniably lesbian and no romance.

might want to have her switch off to the neverland manga after season 1 if she likes it cause season 2 is a heavily truncated mess that relegates the entire rest of the manga to an ending montage lol

lycoris recoil is another recent popular show for a cool action thing about lesbian leads and iirc should be age appropriate, though i haven't finished watching it myself. it's got big gun action but one of the main duo's defining thing is that she fights nonlethally

dungeon meshi is probably one of the best current things you could've picked for this, frankly, so that's cool.

there's a lot of other shows i'd like to name like symphogear and flip flappers, but they're kinda aimed at an older audience so i'm not sure they'd be appropriate. harder to find action shows explicitly about lesbians that stick closer tone and content-wise to something like idk, precure. doesn't have a lesbian protag exactly but she might enjoy kyousougiga if she'd like to watch a weird girl with a hammer smash stuff in a funny painting world

e; .hack//sign is cool but it's pretty slow and talky and the cool stuff it does with the protag coming to understand their gender and sexuality is like a whole arc across the story so it depends on how much she'd like goofy mmo jokes in place of cool action. sao alternative: gun gale online works good as a standalone thing separate from the entire rest of sao and is entirely about two lesbians who do cool action stuff in an mmo to unwind together so that might work, the action scenes in that are fun and the characters are largely pretty cool as long as you're okay with m being a bit of a harmless weirdo

i also like niea_7, haibane renmei and yokohama kaidashi kikou a lot but those again lean more on weird people hanging out in weird fantasy/sci fi worlds more than action so it really depends on what she thinks is "cool" right now lol. i wanna say rinne no lagrange but that one has some really bad episodes in season 2, it ends pretty well but i wouldn't blame you if a couple of those weirder moments end up souring it, they come really out of left field

honestly gonna double my rec for checking out touhou under these conditions also cause that's basically all of touhou is lesbians doing crazy poo poo. the manga tend to lean more slice of life but they still mix a lot of wacky poo poo in there as per the nature of the setting, especially in something like wild and horned hermit and forbidden scrollery

The only mecha show I tried with her was Escaflowne which she wasn't into after 3 episodes, so might give G-Witch a try. 2022's Currently-Airing slot was Spy X Family, and last years Old slot was R.O.D. so secret agent stuff like Noir and Lycoris Recoil might work as well.

I'm like 80% sure she has read at least some of Touhou, and I'm going to check a bunch of the other manga titles against our city library system's catalogue.

Worth mentioning that gwitch can get pretty bloody at times, and goes to some pretty dark places occasionally. Personally I think it'd be fine for a 13 year old but it is close enough to the line in some episodes that I can see someone else feeling differently.

Gwitch was a giant robot space opera that has a high school romance in it and they happen to be lesbians and while a cool and good part of the story isn’t the only major plot point of the show.

Many other gundam are space opera with high school romance that ends with an antagonist killing one half of the relationship, their parents and/ or their home colony.

Banagher was in class once before they all died.
Amuro was in class once in Origin before the colony all died.
Al is in Elementary School and they didn't die.
Heero infiltrates a school episode 1 and ends it threatening to kill a girl for asking him to come to her birthday.
Kamille skips school to beat up people for misgendering him.

None of them save Al are actually in school all that long before something explodes.

There's also Flit going to school where he makes paranoid rants about how aliens are going to kill them all before the colony gets invaded and almost everyone dies.

And his son Asemu was going to have a school plot before AGE's writers got cold feet on the subject to just toss him in the military, resulting in the most successful arc in AGE.

It’s just two women living together and raising adopted kids while one runs a bar and the other gets involved in mafia gambling underground golf gundam-rear end matches with another young and chipper rival female golfer dreams longingly of when they will meet again (to play golf) and lady with a snake tattoo on her stomach drives a convertible.

You seen Paranoia Agent? It plays with a lot of tones over its runtime, but horror is a regular. It's not the most common genre in anime, mind, but that's a good one.

There's also Yamishiba if you want something quick. Variable quality and limited animation, but it's a little ghost story in just a couple minutes, then you're onto the next one.

I've been enjoying some romcom type anime and manga recently but a lot of em are set in highschool and feature pretty gratuitous fan service of underage characters. I'm looking for recommendations that aren't quite so skeezy, both manga and anime. Things that are somewhat low fan service, with adult protagonists, cute character designs with distinctive individual partners (I'm interested in both straight and gay stories in this sorta space with any combo of genders - I really want the main protagonists to feel like they have a connection more than I have any desires for who the protagonists are or even how many of them there are, though prototypical harem stories have a hard bar to clear), and romantic payoff achieved in like not a huge investment of time. I haven't read or watched a ton in this sorta genre but for an anime Sign of Affection is an imperfect example from this season, kaguya-sama could be perfect if they were in college, and the manga for Hokkaido gals has just a bit too much fan service for my tastes and is a little slow. I'm hoping y'all can point me to some cool manga and anime.

Thanks for the recs. I've actually read about half of Nana in the past and I might pick it back up. I watched Skip and Loafer and liked it a lot - I will definitely read that. Looks like it's slow releasing but that'll be fine. The anime planet link is really useful.

And I had not heard of Josee, the Tiger and the Fish but you're right - it looks like exactly what I want. I'm often worried about disabled characters, particularly though not exclusively when written by able writers, being used as inspiration porn. It sounds like this story manages to both be ultimately uplifting without falling into that trap, so I'm very excited to watch! Thank you very much for pointing me towards it.

Romcoms that are set in highschool but are good actually:
  • Seconding Skip and Loafer (manga and anime), and you might like Insomniacs After School if you liked S&L.
  • Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun has a bit in common with Kaguya-sama in that it's a parody of the romance genre, though unlike Kaguya it doesn't have much of an earnest romance plot in addition to that. It does have continuity, but it's mostly centered around gags with the cast being a bunch of morons.
  • You and I are Polar Opposites is a forum favorite by now, I think. Don't be fooled by the ultra-cartoony look, its characters have surprising depth. It's also really funny.

Romcoms with adults:
  • Seconding The Snow Country Hunting Life of the :words: and Cuprum's Bride. "More than lovers..." has a cute style, but it does have some fanservice and it has the standard pacing for will-they-won't-they romcoms (though because of its premise, the lead couple already did, repeatedly)
  • Telework Yotabanashi. Neat little meet-cute, and not too long at 20 chapters.
  • Blooming Love (starts at highschool but they graduate eventually)
  • She loves to cook, and she loves to eat. Food!
  • Maitsuki, Niwatsuki, Ooyatsuki. Faces!
  • 365 Days to the Wedding - two dorks get fake-engaged for workplace reasons but then they fall for each other. Very cute art and great side cast.

Sweat and Soap is by the same author as Telework, but that one while not fanservicey does include sexual content. Shikimori I'snt Just Cute, 14 Sai no Koi, and Yandere Kanojo for the HS pile and Bonnouji to the adult MC pile same for Grilling our Love. Haven't read it in a while but Hana ni Arashi was a very good yuri manga and Duke of Death and his Maid is really good and fun, but it's fantasy.
