Seconding the Ippo recommendation. I generally can't stand that sort of sports/shounen thing but it's hella good.

If you want horror-horror, try Shiki and Higurashi. If you want action-horror, try the Hellsing OVAs and movie(s?).

I truly love Code Geass with all my heart but I would never, ever deign to call it the fifth best anime ever.

The rest of that list is pretty weird too.

E: The second season is even separate and makes number 14 despite being a massive clusterfuck. I guess Japan really, really likes Code Geass for some reason.

Full Metal Panic. It has a good mix of military, mechs, and some light hearted silliness.

Seconding this. It's got a good mix of over-the-top ridiculousness via the main character being a humorless straight-laced military vet stuck in the middle of high school shenanigans, and serious military/mech warfare with good action scenes.

I didn't watch either of the follow-up series, though I believe Fumoffu is more comedy-leaning than the original and Second Raid is the other way around.

I'm looking for something really sad. The type of sad doesn't really matter, just a persistent sad theme throughout most or at least a good part of the show.

Sad ultraviolent trashy supreme champion: Elfen Lied

I've watched a lot of trashy anime and that still tops the list of ones I hate the most, I think.

I can ask for a certain kind of recommendation while mentioning that I'm going to be watching another kind of show sometime. I didn't say I was looking for stuff like Academia. I've been avoiding Madoka for years, it doesn't look like my thing.

Pretty much the entire point of Madoka is that it subverts literally all of your expectations about what it's going to be. It's not at all a slice of life magical girl show, or whatever. The fact that they're in school at all is only ever relevant like twice, and then only for establishing how characters meet each other.

I know about the show and that it's dark and whatnot, haven't been living under a rock. It's just funny that you can't ask for recommendations without being told to watch Madoka, since my criteria there was pretty much ruling out Madoka. It's a show about kids being tormented, in some part, or a dark drama starring kids, I understand it'll be thrilling and inspiring by the end but it's not what I'm asking for. Why have individual taste and a topic to recommend stuff tailored to people's tastes if everyone has to watch Madoka?

I'm gonna try Fate/Zero coincidentally, which is by the same writer (sorta, since also collaborating), so hopefully that'll do! Tim Curry's funny response to RHPS fans is the tone I'm trying to get across here, you Madoka fans are relentless.

Sorry, I misread what you were asking for. :v:

F/Z is, however, really great. Especially if you don't already have the general gist of how it ends spoiled for you by watching or playing FSN, which it's a prequel to.

I love me some trashy anime, I watch a lot of it, but Elfen Lied is not the good kind of trashy. It's the "get sad drunk and ponder why you bother anymore" kind of trashy.

You would very likely enjoy Kaiji, Hellsing Ultimate, and the rest of JJBA. Probably Ruroni Kenshin too. Skip the rest of the Hellsing stuff imo, it just doesn't compare to HU.

I can't recommend the Love Hina anime to anyone, but the manga ain't bad if you don't mind haremcomedy. Negima (also the manga) by the same author has similarly good characters but is also fairly action-heavy so it may be more up your alley.

As much as I love Noir, its pacing is absolutely glacial. It's very artsy and has great music but would probably bore you to tears. Madlax is a sort of spiritual sequel that at least has more going on, you may enjoy that more and I'd definitely recommend you try watching it first if you're interested in that kind of work.

Ninja Scroll is a straightforward action movie with great animation, that anyone okay with some gore and sexual situations should enjoy.

I've only seen the Ruroni Kenshin OVAs, and don't remember much beyond thinking they were quite good. Watch for tormented souls going through more pain to do the righteous thing.

Noir was dull and slow, but I enjoyed it in its own way. It's one of the few anime I didn't consume in big chunks (i.e., only an episode every few days). A marathon would just be exhausting. It's more about the mood than action or plot (which is sparse). To this day I have some of the music on my iPhone (like the show itself, it's not exceptional but it sticks with you).

I am probably one of a few people that preferred the first Hellsing anime to the OVA (production values notwithstanding), but only for a few of the episodes. It falls apart somewhere around the midpoint, iirc. The budget problems become clear very early.

Noir is, imo, the worst of Kajiura's soundtracks, and that says a lot about her music.

Maybe it's time for another Bee Train romp.

e:Bee Train hasn't produced a show in over 5 years?

She has a pretty solid stable of soundtracks under her belt. .hack//SIGN, Tsubasa Chronicle, Noir, and Madlax are all decent but niche shows with good music. Mai Hime, Fate/Zero, Madoka, and Erased are all good. Sword Art Online is... Sword Art Online.

I've heard good things about Zaregoto and Princess Principal but haven't seen either yet. She's also done some more obscure stuff I haven't watched.

Some of my favorite songs by her are from her FICTION solo albums, though a lot of the songs are on the Japanese releases only so you're gonna need to grab some :filez: if you wanna listen, since Japanese media companies are super hardcore about cracking down on region-locked stuff on Youtube et. al.
