I hope Alec Meer stays far away from Star Citizen, he shouldn't be using facts this way as it's going to give potential new backers 2nd thoughts.

That's not good as CIG won't get more money.

I love how the SC reddit tries to explain away anything negative. "It's still pre-alpha!" "It's a feature!" "<External Studio> dropped the ball!" "Just some bugs, they'll be fixed soon" And then there's the posts asking CIG to add even more things to their boulevard of broken dreams. :allears:

Personally, I thank Derek Smart. He's really been pushing hard to promote Star Citizen this year and I think he's really brought the project to a lot of new backers.
We should congratulate him on his hard work paying off in spades!

How much have you invested in the 'Verse?

I started as a backer for a "Digital Mercenary" pledge with an Aurora MR. I didn't even realize what concierge means till I got the Completionist forum rank.
I sold a bunch of ships when my wife asked "where's all the money gone." and we needed to move and I had to repair the car. But my fleet still is worth $8k.

You know, Elon Musk succesfully launched something into orbit with 100 million bucks. Star Citizen only has a bunch of spaceship jpegs to show for their 92 million.

Guys, you just need to calm down.

quote:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbj9rg62ep4 Anyone remember this game? It looked like this... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_Madness_(series) This little gem, Midtown Madness. Fun as hell and relatively well-received despite its simplicity... http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/midtown-madness-review/1900-2542555/

Remind anyone of another game? Perhaps... Grand Theft Auto? It should, since this game was developed by none other than Rockstar San Diego. This tech was later spun into the Midnight Club series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-wEhiGwyHw... and eventually became GTA 3-5.

Why is this important? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockstar_Advanced_Game_Engine - This engine evolved out of the same engine that originally powered Midtown Madness, while Rockstar was still "Angel Studios" (the Angel Game Engine). It took over a decade and several titles to get that ONE game engine to where it is, with integration of technologies from several other technology partners. As Rockstar released titles year after year, they could take lessons learned and refine their technology base (their "knowledge trust") and build new and evolutionary games from titles that could benefit from the same technologies/mechanics.

Now, 15 years later, we have GTA V. GTA V STILL took years, hundreds of millions of dollars, and a few hundred people to make.

Star Citizen and Cloud Imperium Games are building this brain trust with their studios. They are creating technologies that will be able to be reused in future games for generations to come. We all should be patient and appreciate that we're getting to hopefully see the birth of an entirely new powerhouse of games development born and grow right in front of us. We shouldn't, however, lose sight of what it truly takes to make a large and successful gaming company nor the games they produce.

Keep calm and game on!

quote:

It's not a gimmick, one could argue its a necessary evil, but it's also exactly what we asked for. A big part of the immersion is the simulation of a galactic economy with up to 20 million players and AI agents going about their business. The realism of that simulation requires vast expanses and limitations on travel speed. Just because a particular location is "empty" doesn't prevent it from being along a trade route between any two points. There will be millions of AI and thousands of players flying through "empty" space at any time. Where intersections occur is where events can take place. That economy simulation provides objectives and motivations to us. Cargo to escort or steal and fights to get into. That's what they mean when they say gameplay is "organically derived" from the economy.

:raise:

Has RSI actually said these things or are people living in their own dream world of what SC will be?

And this is not the only instance I've seen, some person asks about something and you get people writing 5 paragraphs in great detail about how things are going to be.
