Davincie posted:i am putting my support behind hagane orchestra as most overlooked comedy short this season This was kinda fun. I liked how it is ostensibly a giant robot anime but that it took seven episodes before they got in the loving robot. (Gross girl is a little too gross though.) And the latest episode is just a quick parody of Eupho, because this show is named Orchestra so why not? Let's get advertising!

Nah, they just fight shadows possessing other people. Also their detective dad is on the case trying to investigate these mysteries.

So somehow I found myself watching the most recent season of Wixoss, and against all odds I found myself liking it. Are seasons 1 & 2 worth looking into as well? The show's a bit light on game mechanics and world-building, and it constantly seems to allude to stuff from previous seasons. Should I give it a go?

I haven't kept up with Lostorage so I dunno how deep the connections go, but yeah, I recommend them. Selector infected, spread, and destructed (compilation movie*) comprise a single storyline, and I liked it quite a bit. The shows never go into the game mechanics beyond what you can infer, like "the circle of lights are HP", "grow caps at level 4", and "anti-spell is some poo poo" or vague strategic stuff. It's just a vehicle for the character drama and themes, so don't worry about it too much. *being a compilation movie I wouldn't recommend watching it immediately after spread, but if you like the series I heavily rec watching destructed, the added scenes really help round out and cap off the series. now that magic of stella is over, i'm gonna say that it is probably the best show of its kind this year. it's slow, relaxing and super heartwarming, the humor lands pretty consistently well, and it actually moves through the story at a pretty good pace.

The way KyoAni does things is the old model that almost every studio has moved away from. Getting things done fast is way too important to how anime makes money these days, and no one wants to be stuck with an expensive long term production if the market for it tanks.

In that case actually making the anime sounds like a terrible business to be in. Strangled by fixed costs at the one end or deadlines and lack of talent at the other.

yes? it isn't really a secret that making anime is an awful, soul-sucking profession that pays peanuts.

gimme the GOD drat candy posted:yes? it isn't really a secret that making anime is an awful, soul-sucking profession that pays peanuts. Right. I knew that working in the business could be terrible, but it sounds like 9/10s of the studios are a few mistakes away from utter disaster as well, and that surprises me. Like, the whole point of having everyone be contractors is that you don't have to pay them in a downturn or between projects, but if even after that the companies are still struggling and in some cases can barely release their product then the whole business model sucks. If foreign money starts drying up there should be another giant bust.

Just because these projects are barely getting finished on time does not mean they aren't massively profitable. There are definitely challenges and failures but I don't weep for the folks holding the purse strings. They'll be fine even if the bubble bursts.

The people holding the purse strings aren't the studios though.

For instance, the Girls und Panzer movie did really dang well, but the studio isn't seeing any of that since they weren't on the production committee. Kyoani, on the other hand: https://twitter.com/ultimatemegax/status/812705407923789824 https://twitter.com/ultimatemegax/status/812706331845099522 Motto fucked around with this message at 22:37 on Dec 27, 2016 |

Given that K-On!! ducats are what allowed KyoAni to become largely independent as a studio and start being on the production committees of the shows they were making, that's really impressive.

i'm pretty sure kyoani already operated the same way they do now before they started making k-on. i mean, they'd already make motherfuckin haruhi e; ah, wait, i misunderstood

it sounds to me that there is a oligopsony of middlemen all colluding to drive down the profit received by the studios themselves, which in turn squeezes the animators
