Why did they change all the country names? Is there a copyright on WW2 they were trying to avoid? I wonder if the show will end before Yankeetonia gets pulled into the war by Nipponstan when they bombed Oyster Bay.

A little silly, sure, but it makes a certain amount of sense to put that little bit of extra intellectual distance between the viewer and WWII before you start throwing witches and prophecies and such into the mix.

What would they gain by not changing the names? I don't see a single benefit in using real-world names for the countries here, and several in changing them.

i too find it baffling when a fictional setting inspired by a historical period is not literally that historical period.

Livonia was actually a region that included Modern day Estonia and Latvia, so naming ersatz-Poland that was kinda weird. Thermidor was a month in the French republican calendar between mid July and mid August. It's remembered because Robespierre, the leader of the republican terror got overthrown during what is called the Thermidor reaction. It's also the name of a lobster dish

Thermidor is the name of a month (July?) in the French revolutionary calendar. Romulus is one of the two legendary brothers who founded Rome; the other is Remus who is killed by Romulus. And that's why the city wasn't called Rem.

"Th- something" is good enough for some random country that got dunked on before the show even started and likely won't play any significant role in the story--and if it does, the name will probably start coming up often enough to make it memorable, where it can graduate from "Th- something" to whatever it actually is.

It's not random tho. It's literal France, because the map is literal Europe. They just mouse-that-roared an extra country. Also I would definitely watch a Mouse that Roared anime. Japan I hope you're listening.

They could easily have gone for a fully fictional setting with WW2-era styling, but I guess that's extra work.

I don't see that much point in keeping up much pretension to the contrary.

I'm hopeful we'll see actual alt history elements that justify the conceit beyond the existence of Fine's weird somehow unconquered homeland but time will tell.

Spiritus Nox posted:...Wait, how is Elystadt being unconquered prior to the war any weirder than it was for Switzerland? Given Fine is the daughter of an Archduke and it's location on the map nestled between Switzerland, Italy, and a swathe of German territory corresponding to Austria (absorbed in our history in 1938), Elystadt (itself three letters tagged onto the German word for city) is likely some kind of weird West Austrian statelet. Since that's ethnically and culturally Germanic you'd normally assume that Emperor Hitler would have invaded long ago as part of his general drive to use the 'self-determination' of German people as a justification for conquest. It even has notable industry to gobble up! There are plenty of plausible reasons why my assumptions there wouldn't stack up but so far there are far more similarities than differences between our history and the show's history. It's fun to read between the lines until events prove me wrong. Lestaki fucked around with this message at 20:28 on Oct 6, 2016 |

At least let them have that. For instance: What if Almof Hiltler decides not to invade Moscowstotska? Can Wilson Churchhall convince Josephus Staltland to enter the war anyway??

Episode 2 was good. Slower paced than I expected, and I wasn't in love with the intro action scene like I was with the plane escape at the end of 1, but I was hoping that the show would lean into Izetta and Fine's relationship and it just spent most of an episode doing just that, so yay. I enjoyed the flashback sequences quite a bit. Izetta is a bit more reluctant to fight than I initially expected from how she exploded that plane at the end of episode 1. I'm generally feeling more confident about the rest of the show if this is the tone and rhythm that'll characterize the majority of its run.

I wonder what it means that the German officer from last episode had a pistol encrusted with "Who Dares Wins," since they flashed it again this ep.
