Also I heard a big problem in how the west 'sees' anime is that all that gets brought over here is licensed stuff which tends to be the big popular series and related/similar genres which they're pretty sure will sell. Anything else requires either a company taking a gamble on something, or that some rando with talent both really loves a more obscure series and also love them enough to want to do the hard work of making a presentable fan-translation. So all we get is a small snapshot of comics from the big publishers, labour-of-love projects, and porn. Any truth to that?

So all we get is a small snapshot of comics from the big publishers, labour-of-love projects, and porn. these days most anime gets licensed just because streaming sites need stuff to fill out their catalogue and can usually get stuff on the cheap. the stuff that doesn't get licensed is usually stuff that both demands a high price and has absolutely no appeal to the average crunchyroll user, like aikatsu or precure. and there's usually only a few things like that a season. however, since you said 'comics,' im assuming you meant anime as in 'anime and manga', and yeah, we get barely any manga.
