They didn't need to. The InuYashaCoin (God that hurts to even type) people already said it, and everyone else in cryptocurrency treated it as the final word on the matter. Here's a better question: did anyone in the cryptocurrency "community" push back on it or denounce it in any way?

From the Guardian: Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX says it will be able to repay creditors full $11bn

Summary: FTX's bankruptcy administrators say they can repay everyone who lost money when it went under because people keep putting money into crypto anyway and now the company's assets have risen in value enough to actually match what they owe people.

quote:

The company has been helped by the fact its debts are denominated in dollar terms, while many of its assets are highly speculative digital commodities and stakes in high-growth startups. At the time of FTX’s collapse, in November 2022, one bitcoin was worth about $20,000; now it sells for more than triple that.

Legally speaking, FTX creditors – many of whom are simply former users of the platform – will get back the money they lost. However, in practical terms, they may feel less happy to have been effectively forced to sell their cryptocurrency holdings at the low prices of the time and to have missed out on recent gains.

Seems like there’s a huge assumption there, that dumping $11B worth of crypto won’t affect market price.

anime is not good
sbf or his proxies will try to make the case that this proves ftx wasn't a scam, but if the underlying crypto assets are up 3-10x what they were worth when claims got locked in and creditors are still only going to receive ~25% premium on what those assets were worth at the bottom, it suggests there was definitely a black hole that destroyed a ton of the creditors money. if the creditors claims were marked to market then ftx would still be massively insolvent

WithoutTheFezOn posted:

unfortunately for this dream they've already unwound enough crypto to earn ~$5b in cash, which is about half of the ~$10b total in cash they're planning on getting from the crypto holdings. the other ~$1b will come from liquidating real estate, public and private equity, and other non-crypto assets

cruft posted:

well that's the dream for a bankruptcy proceeding, their goal is to make the creditors whole to the extant possible, not worry about the underlying implications of the market. if someone's willing to buy their magic beans for more than they were worth on the bankruptcy date it's a clear win

I think you're reading it wrong. He's not saying people have continued to give money to FTX, it's that the assets FTX held are now worth more.

So blizzard is in a patent dispute with some company shaking them down. Obviously this is lovely company vs lovely company situation, but often these patent corporations are particularly lovely. However, let's get to the unsurprising parts early:

ars posted:

A jury has found Activision Blizzard liable for $23.4 million in damages in a patent infringement lawsuit first brought to court in 2015.

The case centers on patents first filed by Boeing in 2000, one that describes a "distributed game environment" across a host and multiple computers and another that describes a simple method for disconnecting from such a network. Those patents were acquired in 2015 by Acceleration Bay, which accused Activision Blizzard of using infringing technology to develop World of Warcraft and at least two Call of Duty titles.

--snip--

Acceleration Bay's website describes it as an "incubator and investor" that wants to "nurture, protect, and support the dissemination of technological advancement." But the company's only currently listed venture is Edge Video, a "Web 3 Video Network" that provides crypto rewards and "AI-driven shopping" opportunities through interactive video overlays.

Clearly an incubator and investor for technological investment! Buy our crypto token!

It should have been obvious it would go like this: they didn’t get into it for sensible reasons so sensible reasons can’t get them out of it. People who lost money with FTX and kept buying crypto will now be getting their lost money back thanks to their other money.
