there were definitely a lot of people casually trading bitcoin back when it was mainly digital drug money but I feel like the last several years of glassy-eyed freakazoids yelling gibberish about how their mutant snot monkey is going to give them diamond hands have been way too offputting for any even vaguely normal person to get into it as a casual hobby

This is 100% something that absolutely mystifies me about cryptocurrency: the extremely deeply rooted culture and fanaticism surrounding it. I remember several years ago reading about how the Taliban used the internet and social media to radicalize and recruit people. I wondered how something like that could happen. How could someone surfing the internet somehow get so caught up in what a bunch of obvious lunatics were saying that they'd be willing to pick up an AK-47 or strap a bomb to their chest and die for a cause that they only recently learned about?

I wish I could go back to wondering that.

It'll start sometime between now and never.

Honestly, I think everyone is just guessing at this point because we just don't know anything anymore. The brazen, transparent corruption endemic to cryptocurrency means that the whole thing is a house of cards in a hurricane that could collapse at any minute for any of a hundred different reasons. On the other hand, with institutional investors and billionaire psychopaths now entangled in the grift, maybe there is always just enough propping the whole thing up for money to be extracted from the con at the expense of an inexhaustible supply of enthusiastic marks in the form of retail speculators believing that the 1000-to-1 longshot of overnight success is all but assured.

I mean, gently caress, Amway's still around, right? Isn't that all cryptocurrency really is? Amway for nerds?

I'm going to throw out a hot take and say that it was a smart move from their position. If they hit the jackpot, they could have walked away tens of millions of dollars richer (if they could cash out... which, lol, but cryptidiots are all operating under the assumption that the completely unregulated market they're speculating on will do the noble thing and allow them to actually get the money when they cash out). But if they ate poo poo (like they did), who cares? Sure, they lost a comparatively small amount of money and burnt their stupid scam company to the ground, but I'm willing to bet it wasn't their money that went up in smoke.

I mean, it was obviously a stupid loving plan doomed to failure from the start, but purely based on the risk-reward to them, personally? Yeah, I totally get why a bunch of brainwormed cryptobros would go for it. From the perspective of someone who drank the Flavor-Aid, they'd have been stupid not to bet it all on trying to pull off the grift of a lifetime.

To be clear: this is not even remotely an endorsement of cryptocurrency. This is why it's a festering tumor eating the human race from its bowels.

Don't you also have to report all your sales of cryptocurrency on your taxes? Given the very real risk of bitchcoin taking a sudden nosedive, the exchange you are using suddenly shuttering or freezing withdrawals, the difficulty of actually getting your funny money out of ecosystem and turning it into real dollars, and the various overhead involved in both the purchase and sale of cryptocurrency, you probably would need much bigger swings than just "buy below $20,000, sell above $20,000" to make it profitable--at least to an extent that would make it worth the effort.

Maintain that this time they learned their lesson and know now how to identify a scam and that they won't be fooled again.
