the last time i really cared about physical media was around when blu ray first came out- i had both BRs and HD DVDs and had SERIOUS opinions

(still think HDDVD was better at the time, but now it seems like it was doomed from the first step. i didnt realize neither did anything for me since i only had a 720p tv)

had all my blu rays in boxes as many moves and two kids limited storage space, but recently bought a house and a new tv and surround soundbar. about halfway through quarantine i redboxed tenet since i didnt want to pay 20 bucks for a stream, and realized oh gently caress physical looks and sounds so much better! had never even considered that!

and just like that dad is back in the fold. I just got a PS5 and am very excited to get into 4K Blu Rays. it is awesome to see that there are a bunch of new distributors doing criterion level poo poo even with crazy genre films. just learned of the existence of vinegar syndrome and that it is based in bridgeport ct of all places, about an hour from me. I'm going to go by their shop sometime it looks like a old school sex shop from the outside.

threw out all of my normal BR boxes and put everything non-criterion in a 400 disc binder. still saved my full criterion collection, but due to aforementioned kids and space that shelf is in the basement.

it also rules that sites like blu-ray.com and dvd beaver look exactly like they did a decade ago

wasn’t there one year in the early aughts when army of darkness got like 3 separate dvd releases where one was like “shop smart at s mart” edition.

man the movie selection at Best Buy is sad. I found an arrow release of south land tales which I have long thought was extremely underrated. I swore I would only buy UHD but I am tempted to go back and get that blu ray

The only way you get the updated translated subs are closed captions. The standard subtitles are the OG ones that intentionally haven't been fixed and that's bullshit. The fact that home video standard doesn't include regular subtitling and closed captioning is nonsense.

that’s okay, ill keep drinking that garbage

i am loving uhd guys saying “look at my cinephile collection” and it’s a shelf of marvel movies.

gonna be building up my collection from sales, just ordered 1917 from Amazon for $13. i heard it’s a meh movie but very good home theater demo.

I've mentioned this before, but it's amazing to me how many Criterion collectors/purchasers don't care much about picture quality. The DVDs still sell like crazy. Not every cinephile is a videophile.

I think it’s a price issue as well. But you’re def right about the last part- the only other people I know IRL into criterion are watching them on a 32 inch in a bushwick 1br

MAN the Best Buy movie section is sad these days. The one I went to today had 2 small fixtures that were in the appliance section so close together you could barely walk between them.

maybe there will be some good clearance soon!

The weird thing about Best Buy is some totally unexpected stuff will show up on the shelf at random times and there's no rhyme or reason to it. Like I was there last week and out of nowhere there was a steelbook copy of the Phantasm restoration that came out a few years ago. But then of course there will be long stretches where the shelves are almost completely empty and nothing new is being put out.
