Tetra, are you kosher with your monster-cooking rules being in the OP? Seafood, is it cool if you put a link to this in the OP?

More importantly, is monster meat kosher?

Yeah, that also.

But who knows how long his stint in the service lasted. Even after getting drummed out (or deserting), there were likely other reasons he didn't come back for her.

Well, it sounds like by the time he left the military she was already living in the dorms of the magic academy, and he probably assumed she'd be happier there. At the very least it's unlikely they'd be discriminating against magic-users there.

The attackers on page 14 refer to the captain as 'they', so that might actually not be out of the question. I'm also not quite sure whether the shirtless elf is a man; the markings and lack of nipples kind of look like they underwent some sort of magical surgery. It really is extremely cool that this sort of nonstandard gender expressions seems to be a deliberate angle.

The "they" is almost certainly a translation issue rather than authorial intent. Japanese simply doesn't feel the need to specify gender in that sort of line. IE: Gender-neutral expressions are actually the norm in Japanese, and don't carry any special connotation. So the translators themselves were uncertain and expressed that uncertainty through the dialog. Although it's of course worth noting that this was just a random thug who'd never met them before, so even if it was intentional it doesn't indicate the elf's preferred identity.

My guess is that Marcille is way younger than people think she is, since that'd be the biggest reversal from the usual elf tropes. Not necessarily young in human terms, but like young for an elf and she's embarrassed about it.

Like, 40 or something.

It's a reference of that reference even. Because Vorpal Bunnies had that as potential inspiration, plus in DnD/tabletop roleplay parlance, Vorpal is an effect which basically means instant decapitation.

Vorpal itself is a reference to the poem Jabberwock, where the Vorpal Blade went snicker snack and chopped off the Jabberwock's head.

Kobolds were definitely dog-like in earlier editions of D&D, it's only later that they were retconned to be more lizard-like (and related to dragons) because they thought it'd be funny to have a weak and pitiful relative of dragons, I guess.

That's a lot bleaker than I expected. Also doesn't inspire confidence in the Canaries as an organization that one of their conscripted members can just spend all of her allowance to fund her drug addiction and nobody does anything about it.

They are literally called the Canaries. Their job is to die first as a warning that things are getting dangerous.

Yeah, it's a property of all dungeons and these are dungeon specialists. This island isn't even remotely unique, as far as we know.

IIRC, in Japanese it's just a gender neutral pronoun (which is normal) and the translator made an incorrect assumption.

Honestly, makes sense. Ryoko Kui's very obviously influenced by classic rpgs.

Hell, Laios' party at the beginning is a classic Wizardry party: 2 fighters and a samurai in the front, a wizard, priest, and thief in the back. Even down to the thief being functionally useless in combat, but essential for disarming traps.

Sort of a tangent, but that reminds me that Chilchuck is very notably never described as a thief or anything similar. He's just a professional lockpicker/trap specialist (who runs the union). Which makes sense from a worldbuilding perspective, ie: why in the world would everyone be hiring thieves to enter dungeons with them, but it stands out for being a notable departure from standard fantasy tropes.

I don't think Namari would necessarily leave, because losing Laios is far less crippling to the party than losing Falin. Like, they aren't as much of a lost cause at that point.

The funny part is that the things he figures out about people all stem from their relationship to monsters. The implication is that he sort of started working backwards from the monsters to get new insight into people.

I don't think her age gets directly brought up for a while and I'm sure a ton of people won't catch on to the very overt "actual teenage kid" signals she has in her introduction. Probably not helping the anime-onlies either that her voice in every language's dub is that of an older-ish gruff lady

Her voice is definitely very different from how I imagined it in the manga.
