IIRC Rods/Skyfish ended up catching on in japanese pop culture (if you look at that article's pop culture section you'll see that it's all japanese media, some of which being pretty mainstream), so it probably wouldn't be as deep of a cut to the pov of japanese audiences as it would western ones.
