ESPN might not be a good pick for them, if they just get put on ESPN+. Then you lose the advantage of being on a basic cable channel that pretty much everyone gets.

I'd figure you want Dynamite on one of the actual broadcast channels and then maybe the PPV-style cards on ESPN+

It's good if ESPN paid them like it was on one of their standard channels.

Depending on the money they get paid that would make a lot of sense. Otherwise the PPV cards might make them a lot more on FITE (since ESPN+ is only like 5.99 and ALL IN was $39 iirc).

In the short term, yes, but if it's pay walled can they get enough of their fans to sub to ESPN+?

I didn't know ESPN+ was a thing until this morning, and for $4.99/month...I'm probably going to buy it for some cord cutters in my family who like college basketball

Getting to watch RASSLIN would just be an added bonus

the important thing for AEW is to immediately start in the best possible place because wrestling is a sham that no one likes. there is zero chance that they could impress anyone and move to a better time or channel at any time in the future

Also, it's probably easier to get a crowd at a wrestling event if a bunch of people are going to be right there for a wrestling show afterwards anyhow.

I could see it being the opposite of this, honestly.

Two hours every week at the same time is more than ESPN is going to be able to give up because of college basketball, etc.

I’d say they’re more likely to do the weekly show on plus to keep people subscribing and use the PPV type stuff as big ESPN events to draw viewers to the pay service for the weekly shows.

That’s more or less what they’re doing with UFC.

They're going to struggle to attract the audience necessary for that growth if they launch on something like ESPN+ or a random cable channel like AXS.

Who says it needs to be two hours? Like, are we really so far gone that we can't fathom a wrestling show just being one hour?

I mean, literally every other wrestling show on TV is one hour. (Well, I forget, is Impact still 2?) A one hour show means you don't over-expose a potentially small roster.

KISS ME KRIS

They will probably announce shows first and do fite.tv ppvs. If everything goes well, they keep drawing, then they'll be able to get a "TV" deal. The major hinge this is all banking on is that AEW will be able to catch lightning in a bottle 2-3 times like they did with ALL IN.

Someone should tweet Cornette and ask him about WWE's holds on hockey arenas and how that worked - did they just send $10,000 or something to each arena every year so that the venues were "WWE exclusive" during the Monday Night Wars?

I feel like those kind of deals are going to come roaring back

Also I feel like New Japan must be conflicted with all this - if they're not a partner with AEW, then it's going to turn into a 3-way global bidding war for talent with WWE/AEW/NJPW, and I think New Japan would lose in that battle

Getting people to subscribe doesn't really matter as much as filling out ESPN+'s content offerings. Right now what they broadcast is pretty bare, so I could see them putting up some cash to fill out the schedule.

New Japan has, among other things, a successful business people like working for. AEW as of right now has neither.

They also don't need to do the "global bidding" thing nearly as much - they might expand their dojo instead. They'll be fine.

The two hour thing is mostly that I don’t see someone giving you enough money to be sustainable for one hour of content.

And the Turner thing is probably primarily for their streaming service, BR Live, which is worse than ESPN+ for twice the money.

I have a lot more faith in them than I did in Jeff Jarrett. Because really, if Cody, Kenny, and The Bucks push themselves while owning the company...it's a lot less of a problem than it was when Jarrett did it.

they just signed a deal to bring ONE fighting championships to TNT. them bringing combat sports onto their network is a sign they'd be willing to give wrestling another try in this new television landscape where networks are looking for "dvr proof" content.

It's not that kind of test.
Imagine that this whole thing is a work to distract from The Elite signing with WWE and debuting as an "invading" faction. Imagine it because I just did and I don't want to be the only one who's preemptively sad.

On the other hand, now whatever actually happens can't possibly be disappointing!
