I remember some lovely trolling along the lines of "westerners are projecting their concepts of trans/genderqueer people onto the Japanese, he's just an okama and not someone seriously trying to be a woman" though I'm not sure if that's died down. Unfortunately people who are okay with gay people or are queer themselves but are still transphobic exist.
