Hi there! Once a month, we'll talk about a wrestling move and the wrestlers that do them. This month's move: the lariat. quote:In wrestling, a lariat is performed when an attacking wrestler runs towards an opponent and wraps an arm around the opponent's upper chest or neck, forcing him / her to the ground. This move is similar to a clothesline, the difference being that in a clothesline the wrestler's arm is kept straight to his / her side during the move, while in the lariat the wrestler strikes the opponent with his arm often in a swinging motion and sometimes dropping face first besides the opponent. Lariat discussion questions: - Who has the best lariat in wrestling history? - Can a lariat be a convincing finisher? Do you always buy it or does it take a specific wrestler to buy it? - In your own words, what's your definition of a lariat vs a clothesline? - What are lariat variations that you enjoy? Who does a lariat variation that you enjoy? And whatever else comes up in your mind! Share a video if you please. Have all the fun in the world. It feels disrespectful to not have the obvious choice here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o18HucZx6as

Jumbo Lariat. I love the way he plants his feet. I love the way he sort of turns his head down like he is throwing a huge haymaker. https://i.imgur.com/fPmbnw6.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/2XbAuLh.mp4 and I feel it's unfair to post but here is one of him lariating kikuchi https://i.imgur.com/fPmbnw6.mp4

The difference between a Lariat and a Clothesline is if you kill a mother fucker with it's a Lariat.

The Lariat is like the Spear in the sense that the only way to make it look good is to give no fucks about the welfare of your opponent. So either be blind like Stan Hansen or a dickmunch like JBL

i get that i'm the YOSHI-HASHI fan on this forum but i unironically think he has one of the best lariats in the business https://twitter.com/KVR216/status/1152164384208297984 https://twitter.com/MrLARIATO/status/789411293979549696 i love how he angles it upwards like a european uppercut, it looks like he loving decapitates people. i wish he'd use it as a finisher instead of karma

Nikita Koloff's Russian Sickle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PdW-gOJobc Also, this whole promo. Nikita's facial expressions as David Crockett argues with Ivan Koloff (and the in ring reactions of The Barbarian and Paul Jones at the end)

Would this be considered a "crooked arm lariat"? I see that name thrown around occasionally like for Hogan's Axe Bomber but I'm not seeing the difference with other lariats

Rotation is an important part of any lariat. If you want a good lariat you need to study the master.

Since apparently this variation was super interesting to ONLY me because I can't find a way to find it, my favorite version of the Buckshot Lariat is this one time on Being the Elite where I saw him set up two chairs so he could do the flip beforehand. I wish I could remember the context or episode so I could share it, but gently caress it.

if I recall, JBL's Clothesline from Hell is a lariat and I quite liked that. but i think mine has to be Hansen or Kobashi. though now Jumbo's is up there for me. that's one dude i really need to watch more of. i wanna say Takeshi Morishima had a pretty nasty lariat too but i haven't watched a match of his in forever to say. Honorable mention to my guy Nigel. When the setup looked goofy, he still delivered the goods and when his setup was good, oh my god, he murdered dudes. Baffles me how lazy Moxley made his at times.

is there a reason why nobody in wwe uses the lariat as a finish? (that i know of at least, i can't think of anyone) seems like a very wwe-friendly finisher because you can hit it on anybody and it's such a visceral, visually appealing move

I think Luke Harper's discus lariat is a finisher, but i don't remember the last match he won to actually say. Ariya Daivari does a hammerlock lariat iirc. but as far as i know, no one uses a straight up lariat. if i had to guess why, maybe because they wouldn't be able to differentiate on commentary what makes someone's finishing lariat special vs. a clothesline everyone else does because they have no faith in the viewers whatsoever. so instead everyone will just have some variant of an STO.
