Hello. Need help concerning administering pills to cats. I am part of a cat shelter's med team, and getting my feet wet. After medding like 5 cats easily/quickly, I got a fairly sweet cat foaming and pissed at me, was able to pill them, but it really wasn't pretty. I had to try multiple times, then towel her. I got bit, I bled. I know now to not open a cat's mouth from anywhere besides the front teeth. That being said here have to be ways to make it quicker/easier. The shelter's piller devices are not wieldy at all , I thought maybe buying my own pilling gun/syringe would help me get the process done quickly/smoothly. What's a good place to shop for such devices and what are things to avoid/look for?

YourCreation posted:A better question is how can you avoid pilling at all. It's a pretty negative experience for most animals. I appreciate that some meds may be critical and need to be given, but you will never fight a cat and win (and if you do was it worth it). There are things like the Pill Putty, EzyPill, or other tasty foods. Also consider if you can use a liquid formulation instead of a pill. I will assume you're in the USA so you can get medications compounded pretty easily. I'm a Canadian shelter worker, slowly getting the hang of giving meds to cats that are mostly uncooperative and quite willing to resort to violence. I'm not in direct contact with the vet, so I can't necessarily change the format of the med I'm given. The cats also need the meds, so it seems backing out is very much discouraged. Is scruffing necessarily taboo? It seems to really help minimize struggle with the more defensive cats as I can quickly med them and let them go.

Trying to figure out which approach to try. I have a 14 y o, 9 kg mini schnauzer, and I have recently started administering gabapentin to manage his arthritic pain. I am noticing on a dose of 100 mg x2 daily he still shows signs of being in pain, so I have two options 1) Administer 100 mg thrice daily 2) Administer 150 mg twice daily Which option would work best to keep the drowsiness side effect to a minimum?
