I'm really enjoying this because by the time the manga ended I had completely forgotten all the setup of the various mysteries and had absolutely no idea that, for example, Caiman's body had any kind of connection to En. now as long as the anime makes it 80% or so through the story I might understand the whole thing.

What I want to know is how a bottom of the barrel mook like Fujita became part of En's inner circle. Ebisu is kept around for her role in the investigation in Caiman, but Fujita was clearly able to just walk into En's living room before he and Caiman ever crossed paths.

He's an Errand Boy, and En cares a fair amount about his rank and file. Like even after Ebisu was shown to be useless he still gave her a room and lets her take care of his cat.

En is also just naturally a super chill guy when he isn't in mass murder mode, especially to members of the family. He lets Fujita and Ebisu hover in his orbit because he doesn't particularly mind them.

Give this a second season immediately. Manga people: how closely has this been following the manga? Is there a chapter we could just drop into?

Dzhay posted:Give this a second season immediately. pretty drat close. some stuff they've taken creative liberties with or omitted but they got like 90% of it spot on and the remaining 10% isn't like, important missing plot details. without really going back for a reread, looks like chapter 40 is about where you should pick it up. looks like about half of that chapter made it into the anime, so i'd recommend just starting at that chapter (looks like the anime presented some events in a different order too so just jumping in halfway through might not be the best idea, just start at the beginning of the chapter). i'm pretty sure anything before then is either nonessential or covered by the anime the big important thing the anime doesn't cover is the bonus chapters, which are generally pretty good and i'd recommend going back and reading. the first bonus chapter, chapter 6.5, is one i particularly liked as a cool piece of world building that i was disappointed wasn't in the anime. if you just skip them i'm pretty sure they're all technically nonessential too though.

The last episode finally got my full attention. I wasn't really happy with the plot/exposition symmetry favoring exposition for most of the season. I know it's an older manga but I feel something could've been done to reach a better balance.

Honestly the pacing was what I like best about the show. There is very little overt exposition, instead it was always worked in like something real people might actually say. Then most of the time the characters are just allowed to interact with each other allowing to natural character based humor.

Finished the show and holy gently caress, what a great anime. I think the only thing I didn't like was Ebisu. She was super funny at times, but sometimes was just loud to add to the punchline for no reason, and it kinda clashed with the overall dry humor. You can't imagine how loving happy I am that the show didn't waste a second on a dumbass conflict between characters. There was a whole 5 seconds of "My friend's a sorcerer, maybe we should go our separate ways", and that's it. I was expecting them to do at least an episode on that, trying to do the usual lazy drama pretending like chartacters would actually break up, and I was fully prepared to hate that. Absolutely love all the characters and really hope they'll make a second season. There's always manga, sure, but I feel like this world works really well in animation.
