Rand Brittain posted:Incidentally, what even is animaphilia, which apparently isn't the same thing as being a spirit-talker? Anima and Animus are the two parts of the soul, feminine and masculine, respectively. Given that Lictor's are a combination of two people, hetero-normative genders don't really apply anymore. Essentially it's a long, tortured road to call Ianthe a lesbian.

Notahippie posted:To me it implies the existence of a kind of Ian Banks Culture-esque human society outside of the Empire. Given the context clues in Harrow John has been searching 10 millennia for the people responsible for the destruction of the 9 planets and he also believes the BoE "doesn't have any right to what they've abandoned" I figure the rest of the human race is out somewhere after abandoning Earth when the sun started failing. John's idea to reignite the sun was ignored and the government's collected a select few best and brightest and fled leaving billions to eventually die.

Or they were one of the first to twig on to what John had done. They were the most studious so they might've realized all the Lictors loved John because of the psychic surgery not out of any real emotion

bravesword posted:John is only superficially charming. He’s a very unpleasant person even setting aside his culpability in the end of the world and the actions of the Nine Houses under his leadership. If the necromancy thing had never happened to him, he’d be that person in your friend group who rubs you the wrong way even though he never says anything really awful, and when you find out later he was in an abusive relationship you’re not really that surprised. Yeah to get to any sort of idea that John isn't terrible, you have to gloss over the fact that before he resurrected his friends and put them on the path to lictorhood, he tinkered with their memories and made them love him unconditionally. And then lied about having to kill someone that matters intensely to you in order to ascend.
