We're just a few hours away from what could be the weirdest NFL season of the 21st Century. They talked a big game about controlling the virus, and training camp test results have been mostly encouraging. But the real challenge is coming up as teams start traveling and some are even allowing fans into the building. There's definitely no way this can go wrong, no sir. But despite all the uncertainty, we can at least count on some teams making GBS threads the bed and firing their coaches. To be honest, I wasn't sure how much mileage I'd get out of a hot seat thread this year, since it seemed pretty gauche to fire people in the middle of a pandemic. But the NBA has canned multiple people in the bubble and college football already fired a guy, so it looks like it'll be business as usual, for better or worse. So welcome back to my annual hot seat thread! As always, I rank every coach in the league on a scale of Cool (nothing to worry about, at least for now), Mild (things can go sour quickly if the losses pile up), Moderate (they're in big trouble if they don't turn things around), and SPICY HOT (update those resumes!). WEEK 17 FINALE I was planning on getting this out earlier, but whoops, New Year’s day and a hangover happened, so better late than never. There are five jobs we know for sure are opening up, and potentially up to seven, though that’s more doubtful based on recent reports. Now that the firing is mostly done, we’re heading into the real interesting part of the coaching carousel. Once again, thanks to everyone for following this thread with me, and happy hiring season. As much as I'd like Joe Judge fired (Or, ya know, never hired in the first place), he's likely as safe as a rookie head coach can be. Ben McAdoo was the only coach the Giants had since 1930 not to get two full seasons, and he was only the second one they ever fired mid-season due to the handling of the Eli situation while going 2-10. Unless Judge has one of the most spectacular meltdowns in NFL coaching history, he'll last the entire season, and likely be around into next year unless they also give Gettleman the boot and a new GM wants his own people, which sadly I don't think is particularly likely at the moment. One thing that I was just reminded of in the n/v thread is there is gonna be an extra wild card in each conference now. I wonder how that will factor in to the future of some of the normal hot seat guys down the line. I can easily see it being spun in favor of guys getting in who otherwise wouldn't have in the past, or maybe getting some people in hotter water if not fired if they don't make it... fartknocker fucked around with this message at 22:32 on Sep 10, 2020 |

I paid minimal attention to the Lions this offseason, and might not even watch them this fall, but I'm like 90% sure Martha Ford will give Patricia another free roll due to pandemic chaos unless he goes 0-fer.

Fun fact, Martha isn't in charge anymore! Instead it's her daughter Sheila, who I'm sure will be the one to finally guide this franchise into... yeah

I don’t like Brian Daboll, but Sean McDermott would probably manage to hire some one worse. If Josh Allen actually does take the next step, Daboll will have the magic aura of “QB guru” to go with being associated with Bellichick(which is somehow still not a red flag) and is also white, so he could be a hot candidate. Conversely, Leslie Frasier is a black DC, so I assume he won’t get more than a Rooney rule interview or two, regardless of merit.

I'd give Taylor a short leash this season but I don't see Mike giving him less than 3 years. Players rave ablut him but I don't get why.

Jason Garrett will have learned at the feet of Joe Judge of the Bill Belichik tree. Between that coaching both Dak and Romo he'll get a serious look if the giants manage mediocrity.

If there's one thing Jason Garrett is good at it's kissing the owner's rear end, I fully expect him to at least get interviews again.

Garrett has “Guy brought in to clean up a flaming garbage fire then getting fired within 2 years for a good coach to take the team over the top” energy. So 2022 Jacksonville maybe?

a neat cape posted:I really don't think Lynn is in any danger this year regardless of the outcome. Next year is a different story though Yeah, I tend to agree with this. Last year can be pretty easily chalked up to Rivers being washed up and the defense being injured to all hell (and tbh I feel like Lynn would've switched to Tyrod at some point last year if it wasn't for Rivers' starting streak and his stature with the team). And if they play all of this year, it's pretty clearly going to be a rebuilding/transition season as they get Hebert ready for 2021 and see what's worth keeping on the roster.
