so we can all agree that anime as A) cool and B) good but sometimes you've got to take a break from the world of robot titty highschools and engage with some other cartoons. There's all sorts of good animation out there, from stop motion to ralph bakshi or weird french stuff.

The Man Who Planted Trees is a really relaxing short film fable that's narrated by the great Christopher Plummer. I first saw it as a little kid on PBS's awesome Long Ago and Far Away series
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY_zuNtf3_g

The House of Small Cubes is another short film that is really poignant. It's technically Japanese but it's not done in anime style so gently caress you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0YSFvPTm2A&t=78s

Cosgrove Hall's The Wind in the Willows was one of the first stop motion things I saw and is still one of my favorites and a really great adaptation of the book

im always looking for weird old cartoons so post away!

Over the Garden Wall is amazing and I highly recommend everyone see it.

Samuri Jack, Tartakovsky 2003 Clone Wars, Fantastic Planet, Heavy Metal are all obviously good and fairly well known.

This probably doesn't need to be said but The Venture Brothers (:rip: hope it gets picked up by Hulu or HBO Max) and Super Jail are all great.

April and the Extraordinary World is a French film in similar visual style to Tin-Tin and is on Netflix. It's defiantly worth a watch.

I can't really recommend The Congress (from the same director of Waltz with Bashir). It has live action and animated parts, the second half is almost all animated. And while the animation is beautiful, and the character design is creatively genius, the story is lackluster at best. It doesn't really know what its trying to convey and the story just kind of sucks. But speaking from a strictly animation standpoint it's beautiful.

Laika studios has some good stuff. I haven't seen Missing Link or Box Trolls, but Coraline, Paranorman and Kubo were all good.

Has anyone seen the French film Marona's Fantastic Tale? I want to check it out but am trying to mentally fortify myself to not break down crying in the first 5 minutes.

There was a GHOST here.

+1ing Watership Down. Beautiful animation, excellent fantasy/dream/vision sequences, lovely music, rabbit John Hurt. The creation story is my favorite piece of animation ever.

The Illusionist is a beautiful, sweet, sad film from Chomet, same dude who did The Triplets of Belleville. I think Belleville was better received critically(?), but Illusionist is my favorite. Almost entirely silent.

The movies from Cartoon Saloon in Ireland: The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner. Breadwinner's my favorite of the three, but they all have this amazing, flat, deep and highly-stylized design.

I also love Into the Spiderverse, like drat.

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

Here are 3 nice non-anime animations.

Trapdoor. - An awesome series about a monster and his skull friend who work for a big fat unseen monster. It's claymation though, so may not count.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mluYB9YfzSI

Will O The Wisp - An old British cartoon notable for the voice of Kenneth Williams as the titular will o the wisp. I also remember some episodes with an old TV as an evil witch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVY78S014d0&list=PLLhOnau-tupS5SYKBCKNtr0VmLGpHyDB2&index=1

Russian Winnie The Pooh - with the fat yellow Xi Xinping lookalike bear reimagined as a poet/philosopher. It is awesome, and I will fight anyone who dares suggest otherwise.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEwE4wyz00o

You will notice that none of these shows involve schoolgirls, harems, or impractically large swords. Thus are better than Anime.

Edit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgBtouJD7ho
I will also mention The Last Unicorn. A beautiful, delicate, elegant, terrifying movie that still haunts me. Not for small kids though, (The Red Bull is scary.)

I thought that animated spider-man movie was good too, very flamboyant stylistically and everything, but I can't help wondering what kind of amazing non-disney/pixar animated films would be getting made if you didn't have to do superhero poo poo to get someone to fund a movie, animated or otherwise really. Obviously a few good examples itt, Laika, the Book of Kells people. But there could be a lot more wonder in animation if we weren't trapped by a funding structure run by mummies who think kids these days, the under-60s, only consume flying man in suit movies. A clue to what it'd be like is in short films, like the stuff students make at Gobelins animation school in France. They make so much cool stuff. I wish some of these were feature length.

Mary and Max. was an incredible Australian film that used sound and color masterfully, in addition to highly stylized animation. More importantly, it made me care deeply about two characters with whom I have nothing in common, which is the hallmark of great storytelling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1W_mpSydYI
