Log Horizon, the first good isekai of the recent boom, the trapped in a computer game story written by people who actually play games, and the show that actually cares about all the world-building questions tedious nerds like me ask is back! ... after about 6 years (it might have something to do with the author and tax fraud) Anyway, FAQ: (1) For new people who've clicked on this thread anyway: I've not watched this show before, what is this? Log Horizon is one of them fantasy isekai series - at some point, all the online players of an MMO are trapped in the suddenly very real world of the game. And if you die in the game you... respawn at the last church you visited. Now there are a few hundred confused, over-leveled immortals milling about this fantasy setting - this goes as well as one might expect. And? The novel twists are, first, that the story cares more about politics and economics than it does your standard isekai action (anti)heroism, not that the latter doesn't occur, it's just normally a consequence of people sitting around conference tables, plotting with/against each other. Secondly, the show takes its premise very seriously - the game systems of Elder Tale and what the players do with them all seem very plausible, and the implications of living in such a world have clearly been thought through. The show has the sort of attitude to its setting that you usually only find on the drier end of science fiction. I meant, should I watch it? You should at least listen to the first OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW6sEkTGbUc I'd suggest that most people should give at least the first season a go. (2) For the rest of us Is the OP still Database? Tragically, no. On the other hand, it's still pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edlLhh8qVxM How many episodes? Only 12, I think. Hopefully this will lead to snappier pacing than season 2. It's been six years, who are all these people? I can't remember either, there are like two dozen characters who might end up being central to the plot, and the show seems completely disinterested in doing any sort of recap. Let's find out together. I've read the source material, can I talk about it? In clearly marked spoilers please, and I'd rather not have the thread look like a redacted CIA document.

I'm curious if there's any more development of the TTRPG. In case you weren't aware, there's a Log Horizon TTRPG and it's basically the rare 4e DnD clone.

So I'm still settling into the series again after 6 years of hiatus and now trying to remember everybody is hard. I'm getting there though, like I finally remembered who Krusty is, and he doesn't even show up in this season so far!

Honestly, Brutal Garcon's advice works: Rewatching at least the first season is a good move. It has legit aged pretty well, remains fun and it goes at a really nice pace. It's also fun to hear Tomoaki Maeno's "old" voice and you can start hearing traces of his more well-known voice (including the one he uses for Kyo). Plus Joji Nakata playing a (cool) cat, meow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKXZ2NE0_TU

I completely forgot this got a new season so I guess I'll be doing a rewatch! Wish there was some more information about the TTRPG going around, trying to find out anything about it is rough.

I'm enjoying this new season so far but man, I wish I would have planned out the time for a rewatch a few months back. However as long as we get enough glasses pushing everything will be okay.

KRUSTY SIGHTED, SEASON 3 IS A SUCCESS

Shiroe's either gonna bring back Krusty or figure out how to tilt the vote by having people flood in from the gate.

Yeah, agreeing to "everyone who shows up is an eligible voter" was a pretty huge misplay for the other guys.

Stacking the vote with new arrivals would be the biggest dick move possible so of course that's what is going to happen.

If he obviously wins by flooding Akiba with a bunch of temporarily visiting players from other servers, that's just going to make the election look completely illegitimate. The whole point of this arc seems to be about proving the Round Table has legitimacy in the eyes of the adventurers and the people of the land.

I'm thinking Shiroe's gonna actually pull the folks from within the jurisdiction of Akiba that's way out in the boonies and let them vote as most of the attention and campaigning has been done in the city as far as we've been shown so they may have not been aware until he told them. That he's eyeing the gate implies that he's expecting some others as well.

It's legit uncomfortable watching this while half-expecting Shiroe to do something underhanded to win an election. Like I don't think he's going to cheat, it'll be a legitimate win using some kind of technicality or by suddenly swaying people's opinions at the last second, but I won't be at ease until we're past that point. I've been trying to avoid making a "stop the steal" joke since the end of the episode. (At worst, a shaman in the town hall probably isn't that unusual for this setting)

So I guess I was mostly right. Shiroe got the gate open and got a bunch of people in to vote, but from Suskino (not-Sapporo). And even they they gave a pretty good speech and proposal of their new governing body.

Crusty warped all the way to Genshin Impact. Is it implied that everyone knows the food cooking trick now? Since telepathy doesn’t work across servers it seems like it should still be a Japan limited thing, but I couldn’t really tell if Crusty’s dessert was supposed to be the only thing with flavor, or it was just that good comparatively that the beast girl would help out. Theory time: We know when adventurers dies they lose memories of the real world, and that some outside group is harvesting 'Empathium' from each death. So what happens if someone dies enough times they run out of memories? I'm thinking that's what happened to the disappeared adventurers, they had no more past life memories to pay the revive cost and stayed dead. Elias heard an evil voice that says "Hand over the empathium that protects you and cease everything" which further suggests running out of empathium makes you cease to be. "It also said "Cease the timeline of the artificial personalities." Who are these personalities? I think it's the adventurers, because I have long suspected that the adventurers are copies of the players downloaded into a simulation and not the players themselves.

Daedalus1134 posted:Crusty warped all the way to Genshin Impact. Or the other servers mostly arrived at the solution independently. At the end of the day it's not a *hard* trick to figure out, it just requires a player who happens to have both the skill and inclination to cook food manually even when an automatic menu exists. Some servers might figure it out faster than others but given enough time the method's going to spread.

presumably there are many people who took the chef subclass because they like cooking and then tried manual cooking. if anything, japan is the odd one out since they had exactly one person who did so.

gimme the GOD drat candy posted:presumably there are many people who took the chef subclass because they like cooking and then tried manual cooking. if anything, japan is the odd one out since they had exactly one person who did so. The only place Japan is different is that in other zones 1 person would discover a secret, than 2 would, and there would be a natural expansion of knowledge. In Japan one person discovered the secret, than Shiro immediately jumped on it saying "Hey You Guys I got A secret" then leveraged it for all it was worth. Without Shiro cooking knowledge would still spread, just probably a little slower and without the political machinating.

"NPCs whose quest was broken by an update" is a great character concept. (Along with "the guy from the box art", "gold farming bot" and "guy implied to exist by a throwaway bit of flavor text" - it's a shame the source material came out as long ago as it did, or we'd probably have a very confused adventurer who used to be Twitch Plays Elder Tale)
