to JERK OFF is to be close to GOD... only with SPURTING

Forgive me if some of these have already been mentioned; I think this is a super-neat project, but I decided against reading 7 full pages of lists of albums. Here's some thoughts about albums and artists.

  • My first self-selected album of music: ZZ Top, Eliminator
  • My first self-selected piece of recorded music (just for trivia): 45 RPM single of Mike Post, Magnum PI Theme
  • Album that sprang immediately to mind when I asked myself "What could I listen to once a day, forever?": Iron Maiden, Live After Death
  • Randomly discovered album that I've really been grooving on for the past week: A tie between "Sinner's Syndrome" by Moderator and "Doubts and Convictions" by Troublemakers
  • Most influential artist over the span of my adolescence, and into young adulthood: They Might Be Giants
  • Most influential artist since then: Snarky Puppy, just barely edging out Donald Byrd because they're still recording and collaborating

Edit: I left this out of the list, because I thought it was too far removed from your purpose, but I'm bringing it back for the page snype.

The single album I've ever owned that I was legit into once upon a time and now think most qualifies as a guilty pleasure / what was I thinking? Debbie Gibson, Electric Blue

Excellent suggestions, thank you!

I bought TMBG - Flood for this project, and signed up to their mailing list. Since then, they've given away three albums to their mailing list subscribers, for free. One or two other bands have also given me albums for free after I signed up to receive notices from them. Unlike most email subscriptions, so far the bands I've signed up to have not been bombarding me with useless nonsense; at worst, I get told about concerts coming up nowhere near me.

I've been a fan of ZZ Top for a long time, Eliminator is a great idea.

The Magnum PI theme brings to mind an idea: an album of TV theme songs. I could probably assemble something myself through iTunes and other sources - what other theme songs deserve a spot on a cobbled-together collection like that?

Assuming we restrict ourselves to pre-modern: Miami Vice, Airwolf and Knight Rider instantly come to mind, along with the supercut of the themes for the first twelve Doctors.

RHCP were specifically requested by my nephew in the skype call when I described this project to him. As you may remember, I asked in this thread and the response was either this album or Californication.

I was away last week, so I'm double-posting this week, and it happens to line up with both of these albums. Of course I went with both, instead of trying to choose between these two iconic albums.

This is awesome! I was a huge fan of Airwolf when I was about 7 years old, I can still hum the tune without any prompting at will.

I'm not nearly as familiar with the Miami Vice theme, to me it sounds like video game background music. Which is perfect, I've already included two game-music albums in this project.

Knight Rider brings back some memories, but the stronger nostalgia hit comes from the Doctor - my father used to watch Dr Who regularly. I never got past the low-quality special effects, but the music is iconic.

Do It or Die - the first track from this album that's a proper video and not an acoustic verson came up on YouTube.

I pre-retconned this album into this slot because I only learned of the existence of this punk/hard rock band early this week - because a Canadian-music account I follow on FaceBook announced the death of the lead singer, creative force behind, and only consistent member of the band, Care Failure (born Catherine Kawa). Hearing this music and deciding which album to include in this project (now, more will likely be included in future) made me sad - I really like the sound of her voice, I really like the music, and there will never be any more of this unique sound made.

Here, have the official movie, rather than a regular video. It's pretty fantastic, I strongly recommend watching it right now.

What could I possibly say about Lil Nas X? My nephew specifically requested him, this is his break-out (to instant super-stardom) EP with his insta-huge hit. Maybe in a few months or a year I'll pick up the newer LP, but for now this marks an early entry into my nephew's tastes.

Which is not to say I don't like these tracks. I do like it, and I'm happy my nephew pushed this project in this direction already.

https://www.cloningmusic.com/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXXwvumvzs8&t=1s
Past In Our Pockets, from Wounded Healers.

I stumbled across Cloning on Instagram. They had an ad that stated "Don't Stream This Music!" - which is a good way to grab my attention. Smaller text said "Free CD, pay only shipping", so I followed the link. Their marketting is unusual. After I put in my address for the free CD (Wounded Healers), a message pops up that asks if I'd like to buy another EP for $5 (Pillars of Salt) and the cost of shipping will be the same. OK, yes, sounds good. At that point, another message appears that asks if I'd like their third album for only $10 and again, shipping cost is unchanged. I said yes to that as well and ended up with all three CDs for about $22. During the week or two it took for the disks to get to me, I avoided listening to anything by Cloning - the ad kept appearing on Instagram and Facebook but I kept it muted and scrolled past. The album titles raised some warning flags in my mind, "Pillars of Salt" being a phrase that could easily be strongly biblical in their use. I had gambled on some music, and if it turned out to be lame Christian rock I could simply donate or throw away the disks. Happily, there's no sign of any religious leanings on any of these shorter-than-an-LP albums, and I'm quite happy with this band.

Cloning is based in Western Australia, so the cost of shipping was the cost of domestic mail in Australia. Since I bought Cloning I have been presented with at least three other very similar ads on Instagram, but none of these other bands have been in Australia and as a result, the cost of shipping even a single CD is much more than I am willing to pay for a band unknown to me and without any other reason to explore them. But their marketting works the same way - free CD + shipping, then offers to pay normal-ish prices for additional CDs. I don't really have any objection to this tactic, but it is a bit odd and smells faintly dishonest, even though I was happy enough to follow the breadcrumbs in the case of Cloning.

I also have a greatest hits album by him, and I guess it’s pretty telling that half of the tracks are live performances. He’s not bad, he just was maybe a niche artist.

My Name Is - from the Slim Shady LP.
This is supposedly the official video, for, apparently, the de-languaged version. Kool-Aid instead of vodka, etc.

Eminem is by any measure an influential and important artist, and the various controversies he was the centre of 20 years ago are all now ancient history and irrelevent (as far as I'm concerned). My nephew asked for Eminem specifically and mentioned a few of his songs, all from the earlier years of his work. I already owned this greatest-hits album, and I couldn't find any other albums or compilations that included the handful of songs I felt really represented Mr. Mather's best work from pre-2005. Rather than simply give my nephew a no-cost-to-me "legacy" album, I decided to pair this one with next week's, also from Eminem.

River featuring Ed Sheeran - chosen for this post because searching for "Eminem" in Google and selecting News fills up the page with assertions from Mr Sheeran that his stutter was cured by singing along to Eminem's earlier work. This is the version without the intercut dramatic scenes, matching the audio on the album.

I listened to this double-disk compilation, covering roughly the second half of Eminem's output to date, almost straight through yesterday morning while I was doing some boring, low-attention-needed work. I'm impressed, Eminem really can put together some amazing rhymes and double (sometimes triple) entendres. Between the two Curtain Call compilations, I think we've achieved a great overview of this remarkably influential musician.

The collaborations here are also very interesting. Besides Ed Sheeran, Eminem has worked with Rhianna, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Yelawolf, Gwen Stefani, Lil Wayne, Nate Ruess, and CeeLo Green - just on the second disk. Obviously, I've heard of Ed Sheeran and presumably, heard his voice at times, too. But I had not yet deliberately listened to him. And I'd never heard of several of the people whose voices are featured on these songs, so as a vehicle for exploring some new avenues this compilation is a corridor of doors to open.

Lost in Space (by 'Johnny' Williams) - I prefer the first one, but both are good.
The Streets of San Francisco (Patrick Williams)
The Prisoner (Ron Grainer, who also did Dr. Who)
Twin Peaks ("Falling") (Angelo Badalamenti)

Paranoid - one of the most early-70's music videos I've ever seen.

One of my favourite albums of all time, and a classic by any measure. I was first introduced to Black Sabbath by a new friend, the class skid, in English class in grade 10. He had a probably-not-quite-original Sony Walkman, the yellow one, and a bunch of tapes. Between Paranoid and NIB, I was hooked. I've had this CD since sometime around christmas of 1996 - boxing day sales at the local mega-music store (A&B Sound) were locally very well known and I know I went on a shopping spree for CDs. I think this one was in that collection, but I'm certain there was at least one Black Sabbath album in there.

My nephew specified War Pigs, which is here. I went with this "CD Legacy" for this week because I'll pair it with a new one, also from Black Sabbath, next week. Also, this marks the start of Black Band Names Month, with the next four albums all from bands with the word "black" in their names. Not the most original idea, but it started to fall together this way and I only had to add one more album to round it out to a solid 5 weeks.

I reserve the right to choose a different album by the chosen artist if I cannot find the specific album for a non-money-laundering price. My upper limit on price is, well, I'm not gonna tell you reprobates because you'll conspire to max out my budget here.

Another one from ads on Instagram. Unlike most US-based bands (Anthony is Canadian but has lived stateside for most of his career), shipping for a couple of CDs was quite reasonable. After I left a thank-you note for this unexpected discount - this was another "free CD plus my next one for a good price! and another!" (I declined the third offering) - Anthony or someone working for him sent me a brief email note explaining they lost money on every such international shipment but want to keep their international fans happy. Good enough for me!

Now I get weekly emails from Anthony, trying to get me buy merch and telling me stories about his life. Apparently, he met BB King way back when. Often, he loudly insists that blues rock is clearly not dead. Do music genres ever really die? Besides the long-term storage of recordings, I'm pretty sure that every form of music that rose to the level of "genre" in the 20th or 21st centure - when recording was possible - has at least some fans and at least a few musicians keeping it alive, even at an amateur level.

Gettin' Jiggy Wit It - for that nostalgia hit

My nephew specifically requested Will Smith and I found this 15-track career survey on iTunes. Some of my choices in this project, when I decide to buy an album from an artist who is A) very famous and B) clearly influential and C) has put out several albums that each sold very well, have been to find the most comprehensive single "album" with the maximum song-count. Any double-album labelled "The Essential [Arist]" seems to qualify, hence I have The Essential Britney Spears, The Essential Bruce Springsteen, The Essential Simon & Garfunkel, and several others (yes, I did just mention Britney, Bruce, and S&G in the same breath as equals). But I did not find an album, "The Essential Will Smith". I speculate that this fact, plus the lack of a Will Smith Music dot com (there is this other person with the same name) is due to his fame being more associated with his acting than his singing, at least at this point in 2023.

Ready to Die, the title track

My nephew specifically requested The Notorious B.I.G. and I decided to pick up the two albums that bracket his fame and death. The name of his first album was, as everyone has already pointed out, prophetic. RIP BIG.
