Oh that explains it. We didn't have cable until the late 80's and by then I was past the point of Nick's target audience. :corsair:

i hope that little extra module with the knobs on it is for some echo and reverb on the audio for the CB so we can do peak trucker radio while on the oldwing

If you mean the one with the green and blue lights I believe that's both the intercom and audio controls since it matches the panel below it, where the stereo is on a Goldwing. Lol I typed the word "stereo" in 2022. I believe this is off a GL1500.

e: nope it's a 86 GL1200 he just wants too much for it. 6 disc CD!!

Nice! The CB350/4 has become so rare as to be practically nonexistent. I don't even see 350/2's for sale anymore....cafe craze ate them all up.

Honda V4 is fantastic in either the chain driven or gear driven versions, but having that 30 year old rack of four carbs means you'll want to know what you're getting into. Any carb rack that has not been completely rebuilt including the between-carb o rings will leak like a sieve at some point and you'll wind up chasing leaks instead of riding. You'll become hyper sensitive to the smell of fuel. It's the reason why Honda V4 bikes are usually cheap, nobody wants to work on them so nobody has worked on them. That's for the next owner!

Sweet spot is the 98-01 VFR800 which has both reliable FI and gear driven cams. IIRC it's the only Honda V4 with this combo.

GL1200 has a six digit odo so it's probably correct. Fun fact about the GL1000 and 1100: only a 5 digit odo. Does the bike have 20k miles, 120k miles, 220k miles? Who knows.

Dad-geneering:

The coils and wires on both goldwings are nearly 40 years old and need replacement. For the most part coils are coils, a local wrecker had some coils from a Dodge Neon for $10. I made some plug wires, one of them is gray because apparently 5 feet on the internet is a different measurement than 5 feet in the real world. I used to just be able to walk into the auto parts store and buy plug wire by the foot. The (Neon) connector for these coils is available but I sunk the wires (oem color correct) in resin and terminated the other end with the same connector Honda uses and sheathed the wires:

Welded some brackets from scrap steel and mounted in the same location:

Works as expected. This bike is becoming nothing more than a rolling parts shelf, ready to sacrifice itself when the need arrives. It runs and rides, but the carbs are in desperate need of full teardown and the bike isn't really worth that investment considering I paid $450 for it.

Same here, packed up 3 laptops for clients on the trip out, stopped at the grocery store on the way back.

Starting to look at GL1500's for more storage and comfort.

Golf swings, AI just gets better by the day.

Currently looking through GL1500 listings and it would take me a year to look at all the pristine examples under $4k in person. The prices on them are tanking, nobody is buying anything more than $3k.

super brief GL1500 buyer's guide:

made them for 13 years without many changes.
Interstate is the "stripper" model without reverse
Bikes equipped with floorboards and heel/toe shifters can develop a 4th gear popout. I bet this applies to the GL1100/1200 too, though I can't find any evidence of it.
Belts, belts, belts (applies to all Goldwings).

I’d say 7/10 messages I get about my 1200 ask about the belts. If the average joe knows about them, that’s pretty impressive

It gets hammered on in every buyer's guide. I have no idea if or when the belts on mine have been done, even though both PO's claimed to have done it recently. In my case if I blow up a GL1100 motor I won't shed too many tears, but I doubt I'd be able to sell either of them if the belts aren't fresh. And yeah if I get a GL1500 I really don't have room for 3 of these pigs.

I'll just tell you, I had it listed at $1300, which I thought was optimistic, but I knew people would try to haggle me down on price anyway. I had a lot of interest, mostly people throwing me $700 offers all day long, and the usual string of people saying they'll show and then ghosting me.

I finally had one guy who was super interested and wanted to see it the next day. We made plans, and basically 20 minutes before he got there, I wheeled the bike out to discover that my Seal Buddy job that I did on the left fork leg only worked for so long. It had puked out all of the fork oil, which naturally headed straight for the left brake caliper.

So, knowing that it would need fork seals, a very good caliper cleaning, and a set of pads, we agreed on $1k. He seemed mostly impressed that the bike was all there, not covered in tacky BS and not hacked to hell with extra lights and electrical junk. I think he had seen a lot of older wings that were "cafe'd out", or electrically and cosmetically modded like crazy and sketchy af. He was fine putting brakes and fork seals in it. His plan was to actually tour with it, so he wanted a good baseline to start with

Not too shabby for a bike that I traded a $100 scooter to get.

That's fair considering the market. You could have priced it higher and it would still be listed 6 months from now. He's right about most of these listings being clapped out poo poo traps, people are definitely wallpapering over some of the issues with these bikes just to get them sold. No surprise there, but when the market is this flooded that's what you'll get. I think I would be lucky to get $1500 for it. Not bad, considering I paid $700 and put $500 into it.

They're just so gently caress ugly, the huge motor makes the front wheel look tiny, which it is (16" probably because that what was available in large quantities in the late 80's, the last time an "engineer" put a pencil to this design). One of the rare bikes that would look better with a big stupid oversized wheel on the front. Being an american boomermobile also inevitably leads to poo poo like this:

Holy poo poo, I did the air filter on the goldwing tonight. It may as well be an engine-out procedure.

There are, and I’m not even a little bit joking, 50 steps or more. I had to get a piece of cardboard to stick bolts through to keep all the hardware straight. You have to disconnect huge chunks of a very complex wiring harness and remove a gigantic piece of the bodywork too

It’s “KTM oil change” levels of added complexity.

The old filter was pretty crusty so I’m glad I did it, but I’m not doing it again for a long while if I can help it

I had a similar experience with a tail tidy on a newer CBR300, the whole tail had to come apart like a 3d jigsaw puzzle. On the GL1100 the air filter is just under the tank "hatch", lift up the handy little plastic storage tray and the filter comes off with a 10mm nut.
