Because the people I was watching it with insisted on talking over large portions of it I have retained very little memory of the first two thirds of the show (often about how they didn't know what was going on or what any of the characters' motivations or goals were).
this is very strange because granbelm is 90% characters explaining their motivations by volume

that's literally what i said!

i got them to shut up by pausing 10 seconds into a scene and asking "hey can anyone explain to me what these characters are talking about?" and when no one could (myself included), a quick 10 second investigation revealed that it was definitely not because the show was being coy or subtle with the topic of the conversation, and actually directly stated several details that were being asked about and speculated on

anyways turns out when you read the words on the screen without a bunch of unrelated noise distracting you, the plot suddenly flips from "impenetrable" to "easily understood and in fact, you can inference many missed details by examining what the characters are saying"

i'm honestly mad i had to listen to them say the show was "fun in a trashy, stupid way" for weeks and then when they got quiet for 5 minutes suddenly all anyone wanted to talk about was how raw and powerful the stuff happening on screen was

just loving pissed man!
rewatch it tbh. the early eps are cool too

I sometimes click on an ANN review title when it gets clickbaitey enough to see what they’re going on about. I checked out an episode about one of the more recent episodes where Hori is playfully bitching at Miyamura about something. Miyamura is (comically) exasperated about the situation but the entire time he’s like “it’s good because I love her” and the ANN reviewer the entire time is going “Why does he put up with Hori’s rear end, she is acting like a complete rear end!”

Like, sorry she has some flaws?
remembering when love me for who i am got translated and ann's review of the first volume made a giant point about how the characters were misgendering a nonbinary character and forcing them to crossdress because they see them as a woman and the author is clearly a cis fetishist, and what happens in that scene is that the nb character gets asked if they want to wear a dress and they go 'sure'

if youre watching the miyazaki canon you should also watch the film thats extremely mad about the miyazaki canon, one piece and the island of baron omatsuri

especially if youre a big fan of howl. it exists because hosoda was originally going to direct howl's moving castle but he and miyazaki kept disagreeing on it. according to hosoda despite miyazaki saying his ideas were terrible some of them still made it into the final script. so omatsuri is about an old guy who refuses to move on from the past and steals the dreams of the youth in order to feed an unfeeling, abstract monster. the animations also really cool. its one of my favorite anime movies.

the only good match in the final arc of 5ds is the one where the good guys get to play heel by facing down a team that's even more the plucky underdogs who just managed to get to the quarter finals via dumb luck, and the whole idea is the protag wanting to take it easy on them by the moment he gives them an inch they take a mile and force him to take it seriously. its a decent beat for a tournament arc and makes you hope maybe they'll come up with some other ideas to freshen it up. they do not.

wtf happened in eps 19

Yuya and Nico Smiley are on a tram heading towards their destination. Nico notices that Yuya has been daydreaming for a while. Yuya recalls to himself the mysterious person that he encountered, who Xyz Summoned. Yuya is interrupted when Nico asks how good he is at quizzes. Yuya is intrigued, having remembered watching a quiz show with Allie, Frederick and Tate the night before. The 11th quiz question was "Which musical instrument was Sherlock Holmes an expert at?", to which Yuya answered wrongly before a panellist on the show gave his answer. Tate had to remind Yuya that he forgot about the "musical instrument" part of the question. On the 12th question, the same panellist, who had an 11-0 lead at that point, gave the correct answer before the full question was even read out, and thus won the show. Frederick was impressed that the winner, announced by the show as Pierre L'Supérieure, was able to answer the question before it was even heard in full, to which Tate agrees; he states that Pierre is known as "The Universe of Knowledge" (the "Quiz Whiz Extraordinaire" in the dub). On the show, Pierre was offered a victory speech by the presenter, and Pierre explained that trivia is his life, to which Allie, Frederick and Tate looked on with amazement. Pierre believed that knowledge of trivial matters helped him learn what is right and wrong in life (in the dub, he adds that having a flabby brain is a terrible thing). Allie, Frederick and Tate then looked pitifully at the flustered Yuya, who angrily dismissed any interest he had in quiz shows, but despite that, kept on watching them until the morning, getting most of the answers wrong. Yuya shrugs off the embarrassment and tells Nico that his lack of general knowledge shouldn't affect how he duels. The tram suddenly stops, and Nico falls to the floor, having ignored the sign telling him not to put his feet on the seats.

Nico and Yuya arrive at their destination, the Clarity Prep School. Nico explains that the school's alumni graduate into various high-profile careers like politicians and researchers (and "reality TV producers" in the dub), without forgetting to mention that it also teaches duelling. Nico leads Yuya inside, where they are greeted by an MC. With the students acting as an audience, Pierre is introduced, landing in front of Yuya on a prop suspended by cables. The MC declares Pierre as the school's top student. Pierre states that Yuya seems to know who he is, and he claims likewise about Yuya, having seen Pendulum Summon for himself on video. Yuya returns Pierre's kind greeting, knowing him from the quiz show yesterday. Just as they're about to shake hands, Pierre turns away and asks Yuya a question. He knows Yuya was going to "thank him in advance" (say it was "nice to meet you" in the dub), and asks him to say it in French. Pierre gives ten seconds for Yuya to answer, and in return Yuya makes up an answer. Saying "merci d'avance", Pierre tells Yuya that he got the answer wrong, and then laughs at Yuya for daring to say "Thank you in advance" without knowing how to say it in his language. The audience do the same, laughing and pointing at Yuya in an attempt to embarrass him. Just as Yuya is about to respond, Pierre collects himself, knowing that nobody can be good at everything. Pierre wonders what else Yuya doesn't know other than French. Yuya wonders why he has to divulge this information, and Pierre offers an information exchange. Yuya claims he's not good at science and math. Pierre smirks and goes contrary to his previous claim, by saying he's bad at nothing. Yuya challenges this, claiming that Pierre is lying, but the MC supports Pierre, claiming that his knowledge shows no weaknesses.

Meanwhile, Sora has just won another Action Duel. Zuzu is impressed at the quick finish, which Sora claims was boring, and she thinks to herself that she must improve, knowing that Yuya is also doing the same, and encourages him not to give up. Soon, at a Clarity Prep School duel court, Nico Smiley welcomes spectators to the duel between Yuya and Pierre. Allie, Frederick and Tate have come to support Yuya, and are the only ones clapping when Yuya's name is announced. The MC puts on the Action Field Spell "Quiz Quest", which Yuya is bewildered by. Pierre claims that the field gives him the best chance of success because it requires knowledge. Nico wonders how Yuya's "dueltainer" skills will stand up to a quiz field. With that, the MC and Nico perform the Action Duel chant, and the duel gets underway.

Pierre is on a block a few feet above the ground, and asks rhetorically, "who will go first?" The audience shouts his name, and Pierre says they are correct. Thus, Pierre makes his move by summoning "Quiz Monkey". Frederick notes with surprise that Pierre summoned a zero-ATK monster in Attack Position. Pierre claims that everything begins and ends with zero, thus zero is the number with infinite possibilities. After Pierre sets a card and ends his turn, Allie hopes that Yuya can see through Pierre's lies. Before Yuya's turn starts, Pierre taunts Yuya to show off his Pendulum Summon, if he even can. Yuya draws, and plays the card he just drew: "Performapal Bowhopper". Tate knows that it has 1500 ATK. Just as "Performapal Bowhopper" is ordered to attack the 0 ATK "Quiz Monkey", Pierre triggers the defending monster's effect, forcing Yuya to declare a number that corresponds to how many "Quiz" monsters Pierre will control at the end of the battle. Yuya hesitates, having not listened to the effect properly, so Pierre repeats himself. Yuya confidently states that Pierre will have no "Quiz" monsters left at the end of the battle. Thus, Pierre responds with his Set Continuous Trap, "Not So Fast!", which spares "Quiz Monkey" from being destroyed and also spares Pierre from Battle Damage. Yuya and his supporters gasp, because it means Yuya answered "Quiz Monkey's" question wrong; thus, "Quiz Monkey's" other effect activates, destroying "Performapal Bowhopper" and absorbing its ATK and DEF.

Frederick wonders why Yuya didn't declare "one", and Tate says that Pierre would just choose not to activate "Not So Fast!" in that case, allowing Pierre to revive "Quiz Monkey". Yuya notes how he could be cornered by every move he makes, and Pierre states for once that Yuya is correct, without forgetting to taunt him. After being allowed to start his turn, Pierre asks Yuya another question: "Who is the pathetic duelist that will succumb to a direct attack this turn?" Yuya hesitates, so Pierre gives the answer. Yuya responds by running off and climbing the floating steps of "Quiz Quest". As Pierre draws, he notes that Yuya has been forced to seek Action Cards, so goes straight into battle, ordering a direct attack from "Quiz Monkey". Yuya finds an Action Card just in time, but it's revealed to be a trap. The block-faced "Quiz Action" card tells Yuya that he can avoid taking damage, but only if he answers a question correctly. Yuya and his supporters are bewildered again. Pierre states that every Action Card in "Quiz Quest" involves answering a question, and arrogantly proclaims his brilliance. A science question is then relayed to Yuya, which he answers wrongly, thus, he takes 100 damage on top of the direct attack coming his way.

Yuya lands on a block further down as his Life Points fall to 2400. Because a "Quiz" monster inflicted damage on Yuya, Pierre enables the Special Summon of "Quiz Sphinx" from his hand, then has it attack Yuya. Yuya is thrown against a wall as his Life Points now read 1400. Pierre's turn ends. Yuya gets up and decides to trawl for another Action Card. Knowing this, Pierre gets on the move as well, and reaches an Action Card before Yuya does. Pierre answers correctly and gains 300 Life Points from this card. Before Yuya can do anything, Pierre reaches for another Action Card, answering correctly and gaining 500 Life Points from it. At this point, Yuya is stuck on a midair pole, so Pierre runs towards another Action Card, answering correctly and gaining 1000 Life Points from it.

Tate notes how high Pierre's Life Points are reaching, and thus Yuya is forced to act quickly, jumping across the pole tops to reach for an Action Card on a 100 block. To his shock, the Action Card asks him a math question, which he gets wrong, and thus loses another 100 Life Points. Pierre and the audience laugh, while Tate knows that Yuya would have reached the right answer if given enough time to think. Yuya swings towards a 200 block and picks up an Action Card, which is another math question. Yuya gets the answer wrong so his Life Points fall to 1100; Nico notices that Yuya didn't even understand the question. Yuya then gets to a 300 block and picks up an Action Card which leads to a science question. He gets this one wrong and falls to a perilous 800 Life Points. Yuya's supporters realize that he isn't giving himself enough time to answer questions. Yuya notices that Pierre got to every "trivia" Action Card before him, ensuring that he got the "bad" Action Cards. After another taunt, Pierre reaches an Action Card on a ? block, and declares that the stupid will go to hell (in the dub, he tells Yuya that his brain will quiver with dread). The card activated is "Quiz Quest - Extra Stage", which eliminates the point blocks from the Action Field and makes the floor glow.

Yuzu runs through the streets of City, guided by her bracelet's glow. She desperately notes that something is happening to Yūya and she asks where he is. Her bracelet pulls her to the left, and she asks if it's this way before following it.

Ep 92 Darkness Dark Rebellion
"Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" emits darkness.

The roars of the four dragons echo from the underground tunnel. Sora watches in horror as he remains trapped by "Antique Gear Hound Dog" and Reira screams, "No…no!" Serena falls to her hands and knees as her own bracelet pulses and she asks what is happening. Yūya is emitting darkness and his irises glow red. "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" roar as they emit darkness as well, and Yūya chokes in pain.

Yuto 92-2
Yūto states that they have waited for this time.

"Clear Wing Synchro Dragon" roars at the ceiling as Yūgo's eyes glow aqua and he chokes, while opposite him "Starve Venom Fusion Dragon" roars skywards as well and Yūri, whose eyes continue to glow purple chokes likewise. Yūya's head falls forwards and Yūto's form with glowing blue eyes briefly flickers across his body. Sora gasps Yūya's name in horror. Yūya ignores him, and he declares that they have waited, before both he and Yūto state that they have waited for this time. Yūgo states that now, now is the time of their revival…revival. Yūri states that they become one repeatedly.

Ep 92 Darkness Odd Eyes and Yuya
Yūya and "Odd-Eyes" emitting darkness.

Meanwhile, Yuzu reaches the entrance of the building where Yūya and his counterparts are, and she asks her bracelet if it's this way. She looks up at the moon and a wind suddenly begins blowing, causing her to get a determined look on her face. The chains binding "Odd-Eyes" and "Dark Rebellion" slide around as they crane their necks up to the ceiling, mirroring "Clear Wing" and "Starve Venom".

Dimension Hole
A vortex opens in the sky.

The sky has changed; a vortex now dominates it with the epicenter directly above them and colored green, blue, yellow, and purple. The green-jeweled Obelisk Force asks what is in the sky and the red-jeweled member states that it appeared out of nowhere. Yūri begins to walk forwards in a trance, and the yellow and red-jeweled Obelisk Force both call his name. Yūri walks towards Yūgo, both of them repeating "One…" Yūya and Yūto declare that they become one. Barrett asks what is happening and the dragons all roar again as they stare at the vortex. Serena watches in horror as her bracelet's glow intensifies in its pulse. Yūya screams, "Now we become ONE!"

Yuya 92-2
Yūya is blasted into the ceiling by Yuzu's bracelet.

Yuzu runs down the stairs and past Barrett screaming Yūya's name. Yūya screams and Yuzu stops and cries Yūya's name. Her bracelet glows and blinds Serena, Sora, Reira and the Obelisk Force, blasting Yūri and Yūgo away from one another. "Clear Wing" and "Starve Venom" are both blotted out by the light and Yūya is blasted into the ceiling. Yuzu screams Yūya's name and rushes forwards, Sora calling her name as she dashes past the Obelisk Force. Yūya crashes to the ground and Serena calls Yuzu's name as she runs past her.

Ep92 Serena urges Yuzu to get out of here
Serena urges Yuzu to get out of here.

Serena looks at her bracelet and she muses that it stopped. Yuzu kneels down beside Yūya and she begs him to answer her. Yūya looks at Yuzu and he gasps her name before asking her why she is here. Barrett calls Yuzu's name and he observes that since their prey has come to them there is no longer any point in continuing this Duel. Serena gasps that this is bad and she urges Yuzu to get out of here. Barrett walks forwards and he orders Yuzu and Serena to come with him to the Professor.

Ep92 Barrett, Yūya and Yuzu
Barrett notes that due to the effect of "Crimson Chain" Yūya cannot use any Magic or Trap Cards, nor can he Summon new monsters, but regardless he still wants to continue?

Yūya snaps that that's not happening; he won't let Barrett have Yuzu or Serena and he will fight until the end. Yuzu and Serena gasp Yūya's name, and Barrett notes that due to the effect of "Beast-borg Medal of the Crimson Chain" Yūya cannot use any Magic or Trap Cards, nor can he Summon new monsters, but regardless he still wants to continue? Yūya states that he does; he will fight to the end. Barrett calls Yūya's resolve to protect his comrades quite impressive, and to Yūya's surprise Barrett states that Yūya has his respect as a fellow Duelist and warrior. He states that as Yūya wishes they will finish this Duel. As Barrett turns to return to his position Yuzu gasps Yūya's name. Yūya snaps at her, reminding her that Academia is their enemy, and he explains that he swore that he would never let her nor Serena be taken by Academia. He requests that Yuzu stand back.

Ep92 Panther Predator attacks Dark Rebellion
"Beastborg Panther Predator" attacks "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon".

Barrett declares that he now sees Yūya as an honorable warrior and as such he will not hold back against him. He reiterates his Battle Phase and attacks "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" with "Beastborg Panther Predator". "Panther Predator" slashes "Dark Rebellion", which is not destroyed due to the effect of "Medal of the Crimson Chain", though Yūya still takes battle damage, reducing him to 900 LP. Then he activates the effect of "Beast-borg Medal of the Iron Chain", which reduces the ATK of Yūya's monsters by the damage that he takes. The chains around "Odd-Eyes" and "Dark Rebellion" tighten and shock them, reducing them to 200 ATK. Barrett also activates the effect of "Beastborg Wolf Kämpfer" to inflict 300 damage to Yūya since he took battle damage.

Ep92 Effect of Iron Chain reduces the ATK of two dragons to zero
The effect of "Medal of the Iron Chain" reduces the ATK of Yūya's two dragons to zero.

"Wolf Kӓmpfer" blasts rockets at Yūya, reducing him to 600 LP, and then the effect of "Medal of the Iron Chain" reduces the ATK of Yūya's two dragons to zero, as Sora observes. Barrett states that Yūya only has 600 LP which will be whittled away on his next turn; Yūya no longer has any way to win. Barrett ends his turn and he addresses Yūya as a valiant warrior, telling him that if he sees any glimmer of hope in this battle, then he should aim for it and fight back against Barrett. "Hope?" Yūya asks, and he looks at the sole card in his hand, "Smile World" and asks if it is hope. He sees his mother and father and he laments that he can't see it, he can't see what he has to do to connect this to hope.

Sergey 91-1
Sergey crashes through the ceiling.

Suddenly a mighty crash echoes through the room. Yūya and Barrett turn in shock as Sergey smashes through the ceiling with his Duel Disk active. He declares his turn and Yūya, Serena and Yuzu recognize him, before Sergey's Duel Disk declares "Intrusion Penalty: 2000 LP" and he falls from 4000 to 2000 LP. His left eye zooms in on Yuzu, and the watching Jean-Michel Roget is pleased to see Yuzu. He muses on the fact that they found Yuzu Hīragi while chasing Serena and orders Sergey to capture Yuzu. Sergey activates the Field Magic Card "Earthbound Prison". Stone hands rise out of the ground, surrounding Yuzu and generating an energy bubble that imprisons her. Yūya asks if Yuzu is okay. Yuzu replies that she's fine. Sora watches as Yūya tells Yuzu to hold on; he'll get her out right away. Reira and Serena watch Sergey in fear, and Roget congratulates Sergey and muses that all that's left is to eliminate Academia and secure Serena, before he smiles and laughs.

Ep92 Sergey and Barrett
Barrett rudely addresses Sergey for daring to interfere.

The vortex in the sky continues to swirl as it crackles with electricity. Sergey explains that "Earthbound Prison" negates all changes to ATK, and the player who destroys the card will have their LP halved and the effects of all monsters they control will be negated. Barrett furiously and rudely addresses Sergey for daring to interfere. He states that he won't permit anyone interfering with his honorable Duel with Yūya Sakaki. Sergey's red eye glows as he targets Barrett, who asks if Sergey is listening, before ordering Sergey to release Yuzu Hīragi and be gone from his sight.

Sergey vs Barrett
Sergey activates "Underworld Resonance - Synchro Fusion".

Sergey explains that since there is a Field Magic Card in play he can Special Summon "Earthbound Prisoner Stone Sweeper" from his hand. Then he Summons the Tuner monster "Earthbound Prisoner Line Walker". Barrett calls Sergey scum and he asks if Sergey still plans to interfere. Sergey activates the Magic Card "Underworld Resonance - Synchro Fusion", which will allow him to simultaneously perform both a Fusion Summon and a Synchro Summon using monsters he controls. "Stone Sweeper" and "Line Walker" both split off shades of themselves and Barrett is shocked to see Synchro and Fusion Summoning at the same time.

Arc V 92 Earthbound Servant Geo Griffon
Sergey Synchro Summons "Earthbound Servant Geo Griffon".

Sergey tunes the Level 5 "Stone Sweeper" with the Level 3 "Line Walker" and chants "Revive from the depths of the earth! Gigantic beast with wings of punishment! Synchro Summon! Appear now! Level 8! Earthbound Servant Geo Griffon!" Then he fuses the spectres of "Stone Sweeper" and "Line Walker" and chants "Prisoner that crawls across the earth, become one with the prisoner that walks the path of execution and become a gigantic beast that delivers out punishment! Fusion Summon! Appear now! Level 8! Earthbound Servant Geo Kraken!" "Behold!" Roget declares. This is a brand new strategy brought forth from a hybrid of the Dueling of Academia and City; a new era of Dueling that only someone like Roget could have created. He stands up from his desk and he orders Sergey to eliminate them and send that Duelist of old from Academia to his grave.

Carrier Sentinel
Barrett Special Summons in Defense Position "Carrier Sentinel".

Sergey's eye swivels and he declares his Battle Phase, attacking "Wolf Kӓmpfer" with "Geo Kraken". "Geo Kraken" destroys "Wolf Kämpfer" with a swipe from its tentacles, reducing Barrett to 3400 LP. Barrett calls Sergey naïve; when "Wolf Kämpfer" is destroyed in battle he can Special Summon its Fusion Materials from the Graveyard. "Carrier Sentinel" and "Pitch-Black Warrior Warwolf" are both Special Summoned in Defense Position and Sergey follows up by attacking "Panther Predator" with "Geo Griffon". "Geo Griffon" destroys "Panther Predator" with a blast of darkness. Barrett falls to 2500 LP and he explains that when "Panther Predator" is destroyed its Fusion Materials can be Special Summoned from the Graveyard. "Panther Warrior" and "Dark Sentinel" are both Special Summoned in Defense Position. Barrett admits that since he no longer controls any "Beastborg"'s his Continuous Trap Cards "Beast-borg Medal of the Iron Chain" and "Medal of the Crimson Chain" are destroyed. The chained stones dissolve and the chains binding Yūya and his dragons crumble. Yūya immediately runs to Yuzu and they call one another's names.

Arc V Ep 092
Yūya tells Yuzu shouldn't be worried about others when she's trapped like this.

Yuzu says "thank goodness" and Yūya asks her why she's saying that; Yuzu shouldn't be worried about others when she's trapped like this. Yūya touches the energy bubble surrounding Yuzu and it shocks him. He curses and mutters that he really can't go in or get Yuzu out. Barrett tells Yūya not to worry; he'll free Yuzu after he defeats Sergey, though they will of course have to be separated afterwards. Yūya retorts that he won't let that happen. Sergey asks that Barrett just said that he would defeat Sergey didn't he? Both he and Roget comment that they wonder about that. Barrett explains that all of his monsters are Fusion Materials, so he can use the effect of the Continuous Magic Card "Beastborg Fusioner" to fuse them into "Beastborg"'s on his next turn.

Ep92 Effect of Geo Kraken
Sergey activates the effect of "Geo Kraken".

Sergey states that Barrett will not have another turn. Barrett snaps that Sergey can't back that up. Sergey scans all of Barrett's monsters and he activates the effect of "Geo Kraken"; he can destroy all of his opponent's monsters that were Special Summoned on his turn. "Geo Kraken" glows purple and Barrett gasps, "What?" while Yūya is shocked that "Geo Kraken" can destroy all of them. Beams of purple light spear from "Geo Kraken"'s tentacles and destroy all of Barrett's monsters. Sergey explains that Barrett will take 800 damage per monster destroyed. The air begins to rumble and four giant yellow lights begin to build in intensity. Barrett cries out in shock as "Geo Kraken" blasts him backwards, reducing his LP to zero. Reira screams and covers his eyes as Barrett lands next to him and Serena. Serena and the Obelisk Force both call Barrett's name. Barrett groans Serena's name, lamenting that he wished he could have taken her back to the Professor himself.

Barrett and Serena 92-1
Barrett sends Serena back to Academia.

He touches his Duel Disk and activates the Dimension Move function by touching the "Xyz" button. Sora screams at Barrett to stop and begs him not to send Serena back. Yūya screams Serena's name and Barrett whispers her name before falling unconscious. His Duel Disk glows and both he and Serena are before falling unconscious. His Duel Disk glows and both he and Serena the Obelisk Force are horrified that Captain Barrett was taken. Roget screams at Sergey, calling him an imbecile for letting Serena escape. He states that Sergey must at least capture Yuzu Hīragi and warns Sergey that he won't accept another failure. Yūya gasps that it can't be, and he states that he definitely won't let Sergey have Yuzu. Sergey drove Yuzu off the Duel Lane in his previous Duel, something that Yūya won't forgive him for. Yuzu whispers Yūya's name and Sergey Sets a card to end his turn.

Earthbound Magic Seal
Roget muses that Sergey's Set card is "Earthbound Magic Seal".

Yūya declares his turn and he angrily draws a card. Yuzu begs Yūya not to let his anger control him. But Yūya is still furious and he activates the Magic Card "Magical Thunder". He can send a Magic Card from his hand to the Graveyard and destroy a card on the field. Roget muses that Yūya must be planning to destroy a monster with a Magic Card, but Sergey's Set card is "Earthbound Magic Seal", which activates when the opponent activates a Magic Card and destroys it. Sergey has already seen through everything that Yūya plans to do. Yuzu tells Yūya that he had such a scary expression earlier, like he was a different person. Yūya gasps and Yuzu states that it was like Yūya was changing into someone else. She cries that she doesn't ever want to see Yūya like that again. Yūya looks at "Smile World" and thinks "Dad…Mom…" He remembers his mother telling him to remember to smile wherever he went, and his father stating that Duels can make people happy and can make everyone smile. But Yūya laments that he can't make everyone smile as he is right now. But if it's just Yuzu then he can. He declares that he sends "Smile World" to the Graveyard and destroys a card.

Arc V 92 Earthbound Prison
"Earthbound Prison" dissapears.

Sergey asks which monster Yūya will destroy, "Geo Griffon" or "Geo Kraken"? But Yūya proclaims that he will destroy the Field Magic Card "Earthbound Prison", and the sheer shock of his decision causes Sergey's eyes to roll back in his head and an error message to display. Roget urgently asks Sergey what is wrong and he urges him to use "Earthbound Demon Seal", telling him to hurry up or he will miss the timing. But it's too late; the stone hands are destroyed and Yuzu is freed.

Yuzu in Underground Labor Facility outfit
Yuzu is freed from "Earthbound Prison".

The shock buffers Yūya, and the error message disappears from Sergey's eye as he activates the effect of "Earthbound Prison", halving Yūya's LP and negating the effects of all monsters he controls. Purple light blasts from the card and Yūya falls to 300 LP. He turns to see Yuzu looking at her hands and she looks at Yūya in turn and smiles. Sora gasps in shock that even though Yūya knew he would take the damage he did it to save Yuzu. Yuzu runs forward and calls Yūya's name, but the Obelisk Force surround her and tell her that she's coming with them. Yūya cries Yuzu's name. "Hazy Shuriken!" Tsukikage calls. Three purple shuriken slam into the Obelisk Force and force them backwards. Tsukikage and a "Twilight Ninja - Shingetsu" encircle Yuzu with their katana drawn against the Obelisk Force.

Arc V 92 Obelisk Force retreat
Obelisk Force retreat.

Tsukikage warns the Obelisk Force that he will cut them down. The green-jeweled Obelisk Force curses another disturbance, and the red-jeweled Obelisk Force notes that they won't be able to hold their opponents off without Captain Barrett or Master Yūri. The yellow-jeweled Obelisk Force agrees that they should retreat, and the Obelisk Force teleport away with their Duel Disks, causing "Antique Gear Hound Dog" to dissolve and release Sora. Sora immediately tries to head for Yuzu, but Reira grabs his jacket and he protests that he doesn't want Sora to go. Tsukikage tells Yūya to Duel with his mind at ease and Yūya thanks him.

Ep92 Antithesis
Yūya activates the Pendulum Effect of "Antithesis Magician".

He activates the Pendulum Effect of "Antithesis Magician" to grant the Rank 4 "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" a Level of 4 and "Antithesis" infuses "Dark Rebellion" with energy, making it Level 4. Then Yūya activates the Pendulum Effect of "Synthesis Magician" to make the Level of "Dark Rebellion" equal to "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon", and "Synthesis" fires an arrow, covering "Odd-Eyes" and "Dark Rebellion" in red and purple energy and increasing "Dark Rebellion" to Level 7. Yūya overlays his now Level 7 "Odd-Eyes" and "Dark Rebellion" and he chants "Dragon of dual-colored eyes, eradicate all enemies who oppose you with your scale of wrath! Xyz Summon! Appear now! Rank 7! Dragon with eyes of rage! Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon!" He declares his Battle Phase and attacks "Geo Griffon" with "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon". "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon" runs its tusks through the ground as it attacks with "Sweeping Static Strike" and severs the wings of "Geo Griffon".

Yuya 92-3
Yūya is electrocuted by "Geo Kraken"'s tentacles.

Sergey's LP falls to 1500 and he activates the effect of "Geo Griffon" since an "Earthbound" monster was destroyed, allowing him to destroy a monster on the field. A specter of "Geo Griffon" appears and dashes through "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon", destroying it. Yūya is horrified and Roget smugly declares that Yūya's turn is over; he cannot defeat Sergey. He tells Sergey to do it; this is the last turn. Sergey takes his turn and attacks directly with "Geo Kraken". "Geo Kraken" slams its tentacles into the ground and knocks Yūya into the air and then it electrocutes him. Yūya hits the ground hard and his LP falls to zero. Yuzu cries Yūya's name and runs forwards, and Tsukikage runs after her as he yells her name.

Yuzu and Sergey 92-1
Sergey captures Yuzu.

"Capture her, Sergey!" Roget yells. Rocket boosters emerge from Sergey's legs and he boosts forwards. Tsukikage and "Shingetsu" attempt to block Sergey, but he swats them aside easily and destroys their katana. Sora grabs Yuzu and attempts to get her away, but Sergey brutally bashes Sora aside and grabs Yuzu. Yūya weakly whispers Yuzu's name and Sergey stops beneath the hole in the ceiling. Yūya realizes what is about to happen and he and Yuzu scream one another's names as Sergey blasts through the hole in the ceiling, flying through the air to the Security Headquarters.

tl;dr:

ep 19 had an insanely annoying character of the week and ep 92 had the shows most prominent female character getting completely chumped

discovered that there's an officially licensed cowboy bebop ttrpg. I start reading it, it has an entire chapter on whether or not cowboy bebop is cyberpunk, and this is its suggested reading list

I stopped reading it
why those and not any of the movies cowboy bebop directly references like shaft, desperado, or john woo's the killer

the way people define inspiration/similarities as mostly defined by surface level aesthetic rather than directorial, thematic, or tonal is weird
