 Frankly, at this point he seems to be more attached to emil/vash than the quest itself, which he seems kinda fed up with after the hell-gauntlet with no real reward.

 Not expecting the scales was the main mistake, from the look of it. Looks like tracksuit lady's overpowered Mary Sue design would have been the right call after all...
