I don't understand folks saying there's nothing good this season. They must be the type who look at a fridge full of food and say there's nothing to eat because none of it is filet mignon or lobster.

in this case the fridge is mostly full of either leftovers reheated multiple times already (say the fantasy/isekai line for massive lulz) or Tupperware marked with "?" where you gotta eat it to find out. it's not uncommon first impressions don't grab people and they rely on word of mouth to get into something.

It's just outside of holdovers from last season and dungeon meshi nothing really catches my eye.

i watched a bunch of pvs tonight and flagged a bunch of stuff with potential and i'll probably watch the first ep or two of a bunch of stuff as usual but here's the stuff i'm really curious about:

dungeon meshi: duh

metallic rouge: bones doing a mech original

a sign of affection: really like the idea of a shoujo romance revolving around a hearing impaired college student

bucchigiri: the protag seems lame but the scenes of fights they showed look sick

sasaki and peeps: if an isekai is going to work for me, it'll be a setup like this one.

snack basue: this looks like, a comedy revolving around a bar and its strange patrons? the vibes were cool.

the way of pon: an original about a girl opening a mahjong parlor sounds up my alley

i think a sign of affection, snack basue, and sasaki and peeps are adaptations, if anyone's familiar with them lmk what you think of those. also continuing apothecary diaries, frieren, and slf. let's anime, friends.

Just wanted to post my thoughts on the ones here that I read.

Recommends

30-sai made Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni Nareru Rashii (Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!)
I thought this was cute, middle aged men have a gay romance. If you are a fan of BL, this is a fluffy one, not much in the way of angst or worries about society.

Chiyu Mahou no Machigatta Tsukaikata (The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic)
This is isekai, but I think it is one of the better ones. The main character is summoned by accident along with the 2 heroes, but rather than being mopey or such, he ends up working his rear end off to support the heroes. Nothing ground breaking, but it has fun characters and is a pretty upbeat series, and the main character is not super overpowered, so other characters actually matter and do things. Overall a fun series that doesn't have stat screens or level ups or other obnoxious video game stuff in its fantasy world.

Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon)
Everyone has already said it, but don't sleep on this. Dungeon Meshi is a great, character focused fantasy series that is not an isekai, it is very good.

Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san (Mr. Villain's Day Off)
Cute slice of life series about the villain from a power rangers series refusing to work on his day off, while enjoying going to the zoo to see Pandas. This series basically has 2 jokes, the main character is dark and serious but likes cute things, and he will not work on his day off, but it makes it pretty fun. Other villains and the not-power rangers show up and also have fun quirks. A silly series that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Mashle 2nd Season
Mashle is great, go watch season one and then watch this. A very silly series about superman going to anime Hogwarts.

Sasaki to Pii-chan (Sasaki and Peeps)
This is an interesting isekai. Middle aged main character is able to go back and forth between our world and isekai land, with the goal to make money so him and his pet bird can eat good food. Peeps is also very cute. Also doesn't focus on spreading Japanese food/culture to isekai world, which is a nice change of pace from a lot of these types of series.

Also, Undead Unluck and Frieren are both great, check these out if you haven't yet.

Not Recommended
Saijaku Tamer wa Gomi Hiroi no Tabi wo Hajimemashita. (The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash)
Not really a big fan of this, just kind of boring. Not much really happens, and it is kind of silly how many potions and magic bags the main character picks up in garbage dumps.

Mato Seihei no Slave (Chained Soldier)
Not sure how much I can recommend this, I like the action stuff and monsters, but it is super horny, and kind of gross at times. At least when reading it those parts are easy to skip. Probably going to be too uncomfortable to watch.

Ore dake Level Up na Ken (Solo Leveling)
Solo-leveling is about portals filled with monsters showing up around the world, while humans called hunters gain various powers to deal with it. It is the Korean version of isekai. The main character gains video game level up powers and pretty quickly becomes an overpowered death machine that can solo dungeons. The main appeal of this was the art for me, so this might be worth it if the animation is good, but the story and characters are pretty boring and generic.

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite, Isekai no Yatsura ga Marude Aite ni Naranai n desu ga. (My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me!)
Not sure how to feel about this one. It is interesting as an isekai, since it is almost a parody of one, with various generic isekai villains and protagonists showing up. The problem is the main character has one punch man levels of power, but there are no interesting side characters since he murders them all aside from the required love interest girl.

It is also like a decade-long thread tradition to start it off with someone proclaiming OH WOW THIS SEASON LOOKS LIKE TRASH. But there's always good stuff in there. Make sure to try the mystery meat.

Solo Leveling in particular will live and die by its fight scenes because its story is honestly just bad. I say this to everyone, but it's a weird story that feels less than the sum of its parts; the individual arcs are kinda fun but when you put them together they make no sense. I honestly don't understand the rabid following the original manhwa had. The art was fantastic but the story was derivative, the character were forgettable (if not by you then certainly by the plot) and more than a few plot hooks were just forgotten.

It's a shame the Returner's Magic adaptation was crap because that manhwa was actually pretty fun and the cast quickly grows on you.

There's too many shows to do that now. Maybe a few seasons ago you could have managed it but there's like a ton of shows this season and it isn't feasible to watch every anime while still having a life.

Edit: unless I miscounted there's 47 full length shows which is enough to waste an entire day on anime with breaks for bathroom, snacks, and drinks. Even broken up into more meaningful chunks that's still most of your leisure time during the week if you work a full time job. Do you really want to spend all your time watching anime?

A friend and I have a ~5 minutes or until the end of the OP rule before we start skipping. Every once in a while we find something we like that we weren't aware of, but usually it's a game of "Is this an isekai or a fantasy show".

i'll probably watch solo leveling if they make the shadow soldiers look awesome. that was pretty much the only reason i read the webtoon. there's not much else to it.

i find the manga of lvl99 villainess to be really cute and funny, but it is an adaptation of an isekai ln. mmmmaybe it'll get a director that knows how to do comedies, but i'm not holding my breath.

Yeah the action is pretty decent(since it’s the same author as Akame ga Kill) but the manga is like 75% softcore porn and 25% action/plot. Definitely a skip

If you liked the show to begin with, yes. The animation was really good, and it finished off the story arc really well.

They also finally finished the OP.

Hiroko Utsumi has directed multiple other shows outside KyoAni that you could already watch and make whatever this strange-sounding judgement is. SK8 was even an original series rather than an adaptation.

i don't feel like there's any real constant to judge kyoani by beyond the ln stuff unless you're someone who's still hooked on five year old spoilers for euphonium from a point where the books weren't finished yet. there's dry spells in their output but most studios you can look at what they release along a period of time and find a lot of garbage
