things on my radar:

Dungeon Meshi: this is a shoe-in for AOTY imo, I really don't think they'll gently caress this up if Trigger does this on the level of that first animated short for DM they did. my #1 or #2 all-time favorite manga ever, I've been waiting for this adaptation for YEARS

The Unwanted Undead Adventurer: this one is a pseudo-isekai, in that it's not from another world, but a "failed" adventurer who dies and reincarnates as a monster. I've been reading the manga for it for a while and it's pretty good! interested to see if the anime adaptation is also any good.

The Foolish Angel Dances With The Devil: I love this series, as far as romcoms go it's pretty dang funny and Akutsu and Amane are super entertaining together. it can get EXTREMELY horny at times(I think the author used to do porn and they stopped once this took off, according to the comments on it. certainly explains a lot) but the premise of Angels and Demons living undercover on earth to investigate each other's realms is a neat one, and the characters are fantastic, it can go from a silly SOL romcom to a deadly serious battle manga in an instant, and back again. the humor is also great. I look forward to the representation of desire between the two MCs as anthropomorphic dog and cat hajime no ippo boxers lovingly animated.

My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me!: this is one of my favorite current isekai. It's One Punch Man but for isekai, you've got a fantasy world that so regularly has people get transported to it that they've adapted much of our world's technology and regularly have dozens of isekai'd people with superpowers roaming around causing havoc and devastation, basically everyone is ridiculously overpowered and often representations of other isekai series. The main character and his friend are abandoned to die at the start for not having powers, but Takatou has his own power: just by thinking it or detecting malicious intent, he can kill anyone and anything. period. The series starts out using this as you'd expect, but as the manga of it I've been reading continued, it gets more and more apparent how insanely ridiculous he is, and not in your typical isekai protag way, but like, "one of the most broken characters in literally anything". The series mostly has the one gag, but does it exceptionally well, like OPM.

The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic: another one of my favorite isekai, because the MC is given power, but absolutely shows you his growth throughout as he takes the otherwise relatively mundane ability of "basically has JRPG Regen self-healing on at all times" and shows you how he learns to use that to his advantage. The setting is pretty standard "fantasy world, demon king army, yadda yadda" but the MC doesn't become the hero, rather he's a support character whose ability he uses to be part of the Rescue Squad, a group of skilled battlefield "medics" who dash into the middle of a warfront and grab wounded soldiers to drag back to the backlines where proper healers can save them. Good storytelling, good characters, good humor, this is definitely a solid one to keep an eye on.

things I am curious about:

Gushing Over Magical Girls: I feel like I read the first few chapters of the manga of this when it first started and it seemed like an interesting idea where a wannabe magical girl gets her chance to be one but ends up as the villain, but also seemed super creepy at times in the bad way, and dropped it. and looking at the website for it, it certainly doesn't help that image. is it actually any good?

Metallic Rouge: it's Bones so that's already a plus, and the summary sounds neat

'Tis Time For Torture, Princess!: I have this in my manga backlog and it looks interesting, and if it's about torturing the princess by not letting her have delicious food or whatever, I can only imagine that'll look real good animated

Yeah there's a reason every other character who spends more than a day around him treats him like The Hulk.

looks like another case of WN -> LN -> manga transitions removing utterly heinous, horrific garbage the hosed up idiot of an author put in there. wonderful. well I guess so long as the manga continues to not include any of that poo poo from the WN/LN I'll keep reading that, but definitely not going to give the WN/LN the light of day.

gori-sen ended relatively well, not an amazing ending but overall it's fine, and the rest of the series is fantastic

Stupid Angel Dances with the Devil? yes, it's a very silly romcom that sometimes has fighting in it. it will have a massive, dramatic, life or death battle and then go right back to stupid gags(usually including the villain who was just defeated) right after.

did it have any spongebobification, or are they erring on the side of legal caution and not having random moments of Amane turning into Literally Just Spongebob In A Skirt

tsukimichi seemed like a case of good main characters stuck in a bad show. especially the samurai lady
tsukimichi is pretty solid for the most part, and the main characters are definitely the best part. although I really really enjoyed the concept of (big WN spoilers) Makoto's exponential magic power generation and (literal) worldbuilding in the pocket dimension his allies and refugees live in seem to be aiming to be him creating a new world through it and becoming the assigned god for it, kinda like how the shithead goddess of the world he is in is assigned to that world

the series does a lot of neat things, but I guess the adaptation isn't great. I get that there's a problem if they're trying to play catch-up after skipping crucial plot development for major characters to fit an entire storyline in the first season, but that's a terrible way to go about it. though it kind of has to happen, because characters like Tomoki HAVE to have development and explanations for their bullshit, because they are major characters. and man, I want them to do Tomoki right, because boy howdy is he one of the most repulsive, insufferable, hateable antagonist "hero" characters I've ever seen. his ability is just conceptually horrific he has the typical isekai protagonist "charm" ability, but it's so so much worse here because it gradually infects any women around him and the longer they are near him the more zealous their adoration/obsession becomes, to the point of becoming full blown puppets willing to go on suicide missions for him after long enough. It's an interesting take on the "lovely incel gets godlike powers" isekai character, and MAN was his eventual comeuppance magnificent

but yeah, in regards to the series, the biggest draws are Makoto, Tomoe, Mio, and Shiki. Mio really sucks in an Ayeka-esque obnoxious way, but she's still decent. usually.

Glazius posted:

I think they could have doubled down, really. Do some Steven Universe stuff where nothing exists until the main crew bumps into it, and the main crew absolutely will collide with these people:

The overachiever reeling from her first loss just bumps into Mio trying to understand how to miso -- something else that suffers from first season compression, manga Tomoe tries for a while to give Mio the impression that cooking is a good way to connect to Makoto because the otherwise primary point of connection is her tremendous powers of regeneration, which he cannot conceive of applying to him due to a previous life of suck and possibly also the ritual abnegation of his archery practice. We can get overachiever flashbacks pretty effectively through her continued regret trauma nightmares, which are absolutely a thing.

The scheming princess and the gamer knight with the roofie eye just bump into Tomoe investigating the crater lake. We can get flashbacks to their backstory as the princess's schemes continue.

Once both of those hit, then you can cut to the border fortress, with the demon strategist and the four-armed general doing their own after-action report.

But that's doing an awful lot of novel scene framing rather than just transcription and I have no idea if it'd work well or not.
that would have been better. maybe have small asides after they meet various characters on what their deal is and what they've been up to, rather than dedicating 3(?) entire episodes to setup right out the gate in season 2.

I have read hundreds if not over a thousand different manga over the years, and dungeon meshi is up there in my top 3 manga of all time, and by the end of it became one of my favorite pieces of fiction period. It might start out slowly but the characters, world design, writing, monsters, etc are second to none, it ramps up consistently throughout the story going from a trot to a sprint by the finale, and it ends extremely strongly.

Waffleman_ posted:

Yeah, because unlike most of the other fantasy anime, this one is good enough to have a thread full of people talking about it so we don't have to report in the season thread about how we totally thought this one would be the good one

I'm going to keep watching, but if I -really- had to drop one, it'd probably be The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil. I love their, "How do I make the other love me?" drama, but holy poo poo, the Angel was so mean to the Devil in the first episode. I felt so sorry for the poor bastard I almost didn't give the second episode a chance to make her less of a complete monster. Thank goodness for boredom and waiting rooms with WiFi.
the tonal whiplash in Stupid Angel are wild, and each introduced antagonistic character gets progressively more malicious/cruel/insane, and then they literally just do this ProZD skit every time

there's one thing in the instant death isekai that I really hope they get to it in the anime. here is a link to the part of the manga that includes it for those curious, it's chapter 33, so it might be too far ahead for them to get to. it's also a neat little thing almost devoid of context to the larger series, so while it is a spoiler, it's not that big of one. but yeah, that part more than anything made me go "oh this really is the one punch man of isekai"

I remember reading the manga and then the webnovel of moonlit fantasy, I think it does some pretty interesting things although I don't necessarily think it sticks the landing on all of it. I like the main cast of characters, and the mc himself is relatively normal as far as isekai protagonists go. His whole weird pocket dimension thing goes in a fascinating direction eventually but it's stuff that the anime and probably manga will never get to since it's so god drat far away. I remember the series went on hiatus while I was reading the webnovel and I think it has started back up again, but I haven't gone back yet.

iirc someone watching the new season said they start out season 2 with multiple episodes of backfilling necessary plot that was supposed to be in season 1 but got skipped to fit an entire arc into it, and so season 2 unfortunately starts off on the wrong foot.

But as far as overpowered isekai series go, as someone who has read waaaaay too many of them, it's definitely one of the ones I like more out of all of them.

Red Ranger isekai is easily in the top 5 isekai I read. It's very silly, but plays with that silliness in the right ways. The designs are also genuinely great, the rangers having bandage themes to them is ridiculous in the best way.

And yeah, the Egyptian ranger style rules. I also really like the villain who was just (re)introduced, he's a jerk But Maybe Has A Heart Of Gold????
