Off to a good start, need to rewatch it in English and see how they did.

The dub is good, tho I feel like Senshi's characterization is a little off. He is generally very mild and speaks in an old-timey manner so having him say "tastes like rear end" really caught me off guard. I'm also not sure why they felt the need to change his line saying "Senshi is dwarven for researcher" to "Senshi is dwarven for seeker".

...is Marcille really not going to do a single even remotely competent thing this entire show? it's already getting real old

Dungeon Meshi sets a lot of tone early with episodic feeling chapters/episodes but we are very quickly headed into serial territory where characters become more dimensional. You could argue that the one-note jokes are there early on to make the characters growth more impactful. That said, this episode starts hinting at the deeper layers pretty quickly:

- Laios and the Chillchuck aren't purposefully being dismissive of Marcille. They just need her to save her strength so she can have mana for clutch moments and healing later in the dungeon.
- Marcille struggles with feelings of inadequacy because she is incredibly book smart but lacks some real world experience.
- Chillchuck's prickly attitude partially comes from the weight of knowing that messing up a trap means his friends getting killed.
- Senshi can be dismissive of things he doesn't understand but, more often than not, is just asking for mutual respect.

Marcille never stops being everyone's favorite failgirl but you'll quickly see that she is both competent and formidable.

Looking at credits is a mistake, Mad Mage is a way more intimidating antagonist name than freaking Thistle. Can’t help but wonder if the moniker is a reference to the Wizardry games, I’ve never played them but still know about the first one being about defeating the Mad Wizard Andrew.

Yep! Ryoko Kui is a big fantasy/rpg game fan but was influenced by Wizardry when making Dungeon Meshi more than any other fantasy property.

Also, no spoilers, but the 2nd cour PV makes it clear that they aren't finishing up the series in 24 eps. Which is great because it needs, at minimum, three cours to adapt the entire manga without rushing. Four cours would be ideal.
