Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky some scattered thoughts: - knew literally nothing about this going in, deliberately didn't read about it so wasn't sure what to expect. early on i thought it was gonna be a slow gritty thing with the preamble about the horrible capitalist future and the gradual introduction of the new prisoners. then suddenly the pacing sped way the gently caress up. didn't know what to make of it but by the time of the fight scene with the north wing guy i was on board. especially with the other three just bursting in out of nowhere, lol. - hella gory obviously but it's cool, ridiculously over the top. nothing particularly squeamish although the bit where they shove razor blades in his mouth did make my toes curl a bit. - v low budget but it works. everything is sparse with single blocks of colour but i liked that the warden's office was lavish in contrast. even the assistant warden's office was just his desk full of food and shelves upon shelves of porn which i thought was funny. - speaking of the assistant warden he's probably my favourite part. actor is clearly enjoying himself hamming it way the gently caress up, having a glass eye full of mints, etc. just a ridiculous character - shoulda killed off the warden's awful son - i watched this subtitled on a legit free website but it was free because there were unskippable ads. the best time this kicked in was that the very second the first gang of four guy got his eye popped out, an advert for kfc started where a chicken burger rotated while down with the sickness played - the warden's transformation. wtf. overall this isn't a genre i've delved into much but i enjoyed it well enough. not an incredible film by any stretch but a fun romp. 7/10

Got around to seeing my own pick lol alan partridge: alpha papa was pleasantly surprised when this first came out as a lot of the later partridge stuff has been mixed. for some info this character's been around for ages but easily the best thing he's been in was a late 90s/early 00s series called I'm Alan Partridge which just followed him round his poo poo life while he tried to get back on tv. his assistant lynn and michael the doorman from the film were also in it The series was also insanely British though, just crammed full of stupid niche reference to UK things, so it can be a tough recommendation but it's worth trying. anyway film still holds up on rewatch, a lot more broadly appealing humour which was definitely the intent. some of the dumbest jokes got me howling like the exchange about "banged up abroad" and Michael throwing himself off the pier as a distraction felt michael and lynn were a bit underutilised but that's just because I've seen them in the series I think. colm meaney also nailed his part. Overall I thought this film would work even for people who have zero background knowledge of Coogan's other partridge stuff so glad to see it went down well. 8/10
