Lucas was clearly on top of his game when he directed A New Hope. By now, most Star Wars fans have heard the name Joseph Campbell enough to know his work, and its relevance to the film, so no discussion need go on here. It's interesting to note that this first film is entirely self-contained. Had it not been a phenomenal success worldwide (people in African countries were even lining up around the block to see it), we probably would not have seen Episodes Five and Six come to the big screen. Looking back, I can see how blatant fanboyism built the movie up to an obscene level. The film is not without its faults. The relatively unknown cast (Ford being the exception), shows its lack of acting experience throughout. The one thing that covers up all these faults, and turns the movie into a solid sci-fi film, is the fact that the movie is essentially an opera in space. We all know what's going to happen in the end (evil will fall, good will triumph), it's merely the impressive way that Lucas takes us to that point that makes the movie watchable. 4.5/5 EDIT: Also, this isn't a discussion forum, so your job is to post a review, not facilitate a dialogue concerning the film. This is still my favorite of all teh Star Wars movies. I remember watching it in my aunt's basement over and over for an entire day when I was a kid. I never get sick of the Death Star battle at the end, especially the new-and-improved special edition version. I didn't think Wedge could get any cooler. 5/5

There is only one thing that makes this movie better, and that's picturing every line being used on a first date. Somehow, despite the movie's cheesiness (Luke's line about going to pick up some power converters comes to mind) and its tendency to paint things in black and white, it's just enjoyable, perhaps because Lucas does such a job of creating his own little Uinverse. One can't help but to wonder where all these wacky looking aliens come from, and why one of them hates Luke for no apparent reason. These lines always crack me up nowadays: "That's no moon, that's a space station!" "Into the garbage chute, flyboy!" "Will somebody get this walking carpet out of my way?" 4.5

Watching this as an adult (and in widescreen again for the first time in over 20 years) wasn't the thrill I thought it would be. But somehow I know that if it was my first time, I'd be just as enchanted and entertained as I was when I was little. Lucas crafts a world that is alien and yet totally recognizable, fully realized. What it lacks in emotional or intellectual depth, it makes up for in sheer entertainment value per frame, and breadth of imagination. Rating: 5

What a great movie. I honestly think that this is one of the finest movies ever made. It has its flaws, but it's just so well put together and solid. Yeah, the plot is kinda simple and the dialogue is funny ("But I was going to go to Toshi Station to pick up some power convertors  "), but it's charming in a way. You forgive it because the characters themselves are interesting. Plus, not ALL of the acting and dialogue is bad. There's Sir Alec Guiness, James Earl Jones, and Peter Cushing. And Harrison Ford is pretty drat cool. Darth Vader is one of the most awesome villains EVER. I know I sound like a fanboy, but damnit it's true. His appearance, his breathing, and James Earl Jones' voice all go together to make him one of the awesomest awesomes that ever awesomed. He chokes that one dude with his bare hands, and then later on, makes that one general his bitch using the FORCE! What a memorable character. The cantina scene, too, is one of the most memorable scenes ever put on film. The sheer atmosphere of the whole thing is just incredible. To my knowledge, it's the first time that aliens are handled in this way: just chilling at the bar. Before, aliens were space invaders or some poo poo. But Lucas really injected some originality into the genre. Actually, Lucas did a lot to make SW his own. Some detractors call SW derivative, but even though it derives a lot of inspiration from old space opera, SW still has a lot of original and creative concepts, and manages to be fresh. Now, maybe the plot is a little simple. I mean, when you think about it, they basically go from Tatooine straight to the Death Star, and then to a final battle. Maybe Lucas could have lengthened it somehow, like maybe they reach Alderaan before it's blown up. That's just my opinion, though. It's still very coherent and compact, and that's just fine. I used to watch the original trilogy over and over as a kid. I watched this movie again two days ago expecting it to be a little outdated and lameified and couldn't believe how awesome it was. I don't know why but the movie sucks you right into its universe, much in the same way that the Harry Potter books do. Those two series share many similiarities such as a simple plot, strong characters and fantastic universes that draw you deep in. There is definitely some faults in the acting but in my opinion it adds a positive element to the movie as opposed to a negative one. When the first Star Wars came out there wasn't the massive expectation that there is now for every prequel. The little faults in this movie preserve its charm. I give it a 5.5/ 5, one of the most important and entertaining cultural pieces of pop art in recent times.

Star Wars was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Cool spaceships, lightsaber fights and evil villains make this one of the most enjoyable movies ever made. 5.0 / 5 Han Shot First.

Everyone I knew grew up watching this movie so I bought the Blu-Ray pack and finally watched Episode 4 tonight. 2.5/5 I'm rating this movie today, knowing full-well that it came out years ago. So I'm not taking points off for fashion or the outdated tech displays. It seemed very rushed and horribly paced as a one-off movie. Fifteen minutes of robots. Then one of the robots lands on Luke Skywalker's planet. He knows that the one person in the universe that the droids are searching for lives over a hill. So he brings them there, learns he has super powers, and a few minutes later destroys the Death Star. He goes from a nobody to the leader of a rebel brigade overnight. Again, the pacing is loving awful. I think there is a huge nostalgia-factor for most people. I grew up loving the X-Men cartoon on Fox in the 90's. I saw a few episodes earlier in the year and that poo poo was abysmal. But when I saw it as a child with fresh sci-fi eyes, it was mind-blowing. And I'm sure that the movie was fresh for people who saw it in theaters, but it looks weak now and has a pretty boring story attached. To me, it's like Avatar. Avatar is a beautiful movie telling a boring story. Hard yet sensitive man goes native and falls for a woman. But with cool 3D and IMAX and sexiness! In 2012, Star Wars is a boring movie. I know a lot of people will hate that, but watch it today and tell me how you would rate it.

I agree this movie does not need any reviews its just so drat well known, and its obvious how so much was derived from classic mythology, but with a generic reboot of all the classics and some 20th century history. Having said that, I saw this as a five year old after waiting in a wrap around line outside the local theatre. We were actually late by like one minute (missed nothing) so they let us watch it again. I can say this, with all the hokey/campy action, the boring parts of droids walking in the desert, by the end everyone was completely gripped and on the edge of their seats. I have never since witnessed an entire (large/packed) theatre collectively lose their poo poo like they did when good won over evil at the last possible second. We were all 'right loving there' in the fight with the rebellion. Screaming, cheering, hugging, and probably the first gently caress YES I ever heard, and that was probably from my mother. It's one of the most vivid memories of my childhood, and I was fortunate to be able to see episodes 4-6 as they were released. The original trilogy was on the other day and there I was, glued again, even knowing all the problems with the movies (ewoks wtf?). I have not bothered with episodes 1-3 until this weekend, but my car crash / trainwreck mentality kicked in and I was not disappointed. They were total poop, just as promised. Oh, and SciFi is NOT my genre. They remind me of soap operas in funny outfits. 5/5 And I wish I kept all my Kenner crap from the late 70's early 80's.

4.5/5. This movie has some pacing issues (it reminds me of the same issues THX-1138 has. It's no surprise that they say it was saved in editing) but it is still impressive. Peter Cushing and Alec Guiness kill in their roles. James Earl Jones does a very memorable job, skyrocketing a character that looks like a walking toy into cult-status, and the newcomers all have a very charming chemistry, with Harrison Ford being the obvious highlight.
