I find it doesn't have the resolution to scan an image from 35mm film with enough information for the print size I usually prefer, 8" or more on the short side, prints tends to end up rather soft looking unless I use an excessive amount of sharpening. Perfectly fine for 4x6" though. I use a digital camera (Sony a6000) with a macro lens slug under a tripod over a good quality light table to scan 35mm though the v550 is just fine for quick proofs when scanning at a lower resolution for speed.

Capture One is so good. I switched over 2 years ago and haven't regretted it for a second. More than anything I just love how that initial raw conversion is so much more reasonable, at least with Sony cameras. Whatever changes you want to make are at least starting from a usable base.

With Lightroom, people look like sickly aliens in a cloud of fog, and half the work is just getting back to something normal.

Yeah, I'm still rocking the photography plan for that reason, so I have a Lightroom license that I don't use. Lovin' this subscription-based dystopia. I'm a couple episodes behind on the new Star Trek, and I'm getting the same feeling like when I'd realize I'm still paying for a World of Warcraft subscription that I haven't logged into for a month. :v:

I’ve got about 100 Gb of GoPro movies now that I want to make into a short 10 minute summary movie. What are the best programs for this? Can anyone link a good guide? I’ve never done any video editing before.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, I couldn’t find a video thread anywhere.

A question to people with experience in the new Lightroom. I'd like to keep using Lightroom Classic on my desktop machine and not feed all of my files to the cloud. However, I see the utility in New Lightroom's function as a desktop version of Lightroom Mobile. Will it actually work like that, and let me use it on my laptop to view and edit my shared Collections the way Lightroom Mobile does?

I haven't used a lot of video editors, so I can't really help with comparisons, but if you really just want to do this one project, then the 30 dollar monthly subscription to Adobe Premiere could do the trick. (It's 20 bucks a month if you commit to a whole year.)

It's definitely one of the big ones, and it's pretty intuitive for something so fully featured. I've only run into massive frustration with free programs, but it depends on how intricate you want to get.

Final Cut Pro and Premiere are the two big ones that most professionals use, imovie would likely be good enough for your needs and the simplicity might be nice if you're new to video editing. There are endless tutorials out there, lots of beginner friendly ones on youtube. I would recommend at least doing some sort of beginner tutorial for whatever software you decide to try.

The thought of paring down 100gb worth of video makes me cringe. I've actually gotten pretty lazy and don't do a lot of video anymore for that reason. I used to take videos of all my hiking/backpacking trips and then throw them together in a short 2-3 minute highlight video. It ended up becoming more of a burden than it was worth. The amount of time it takes per second of video can be frustrating especially if you're not familiar with video.

Thanks for the responses. I’m a windows person I’ll probably go with Premiere Elements. I already use Lightroom for my photos so should be a straight forward jump I hope.

I was looking at downgrading my Adobe sub (I currently have the 'everything except Stock' plan), and it looks as though Adobe are making it super difficult to get the old Lr+Ps plan if you want Lightroom Classic rather than Lightroom CC. I don't want a TB of cloud data and I don't want to not have Ps either.

There's no option for the 20gb cloud storage? Because that's the basement tier plan, gives the new crappy lightroom, the old cool lightroom, and photoshop.

My renewal was right around the time the new stuff was announced and don't remember having any issues selecting the $10/mo vesion.

But it was already selected so maybe I got grandfathered in? lovely if true!

I still see it, but they have it hidden. You have to click the right arrow a bunch of times to get to the cheaper plan.

I manage a boatload (several hundred thousand) images for work. We are implementing a Digital Asset Management System so that I don't have to pop into lightroom and export photos every time someone needs to make a powerpoint.

Due to a vendor problem, when we imported ~100k photos into the DAMS, the DublinCore keywords did not get ingested into the DAMS metadata.

There is a way around this: I can upload a spreadsheet with the filenames and the keywords to the DAMS and it will input them for me

BUT

how do I make lightroom export me such a list? I just need 2 excel columns: file name and keywords. I am willing to spend money on this solution.

I can’t be convinced to stick with it because of it’s status anymore. It can’t be too hard to find LR and PS alternatives that I like.

Has anyone done this? I’ve hung on but eh I don’t see the point.

If you are sql handy, the lightroom catalog is just a sqlite database. The queries are annoying but the main table of interest is Adobe_images. Adobe_images has a column id_local which will reference rows in AgLibraryKeywordImage, and rootFile which gets you the on-disk file name from AgLibraryFile. When you need to convert the keyword id to their string, AgLibraryKeyword is the table to query.

One of the cool and under-reported things about the Adobe sub is that you sometimes get invited to beta test new features. Right now for example, I'm in a test for the new Photoshop Cheese plugin. It's got all the usual options you'd expect for daily tasks - Cheddar, Mozzarella, Emmental, and then more esoteric selections for specialist stuff - thats when you'd go for something like Tilsit, Y Feny or Mongolian Mare Curds. The strength of the cheese directly relates to the power of the effect too so you get a much more visible result from, say Limburger, than from Gouda. For example, I was at a rodeo event a while ago and I had some nice pictures of horses but the backgrounds were too busy. I wanted to apply a gaussian blur to the background while leaving the horse nice and sharp. To cut the horse out, obviously I selected Mascarpone.

If you have a bunch of photos that all need the same basic edits - applying a tone curve, white balance, split toning, etc - you can make those changes in one image, copy them and then paste them to all or some of the other images in your collection. It might be useful to make separate collections for all the photos in a particular location so that you can select and process them more easily.

Anything beyond that - crops, exposure adjustment, healing and so on is likely to be per photo anyway and not something you can apply globally.

Put the originals on a USB hard drive, generate smart previews on an internal SSD. Once that's done unplug the hard drive.

Then comes the reject/star rating phase. Reject and purge the obvious duds, poor but technically sufficient photos get one star, stuff you actually like gets two or three stars depending how much you like it.

That'll whittle the set down to manageable numbers, if a photo gets to three stars start doing edits on it. Then repeat the star process, except with four and five stars.

I always feel like the odd one out since I actually use IrfanView to look through my pics, copy the best pics to an edit folder, and then go to Photoshop from there. Part of that could be because I've really only ever used LR for final image conversion and the fact that I'm not really a fan of the UI. But on the other hand going that route has allowed me to work pretty efficiently instead of waiting for LR to do anything for me before I start doing any editing of any sort.

I too use IrfanView but mostly just for the first round of purging the undesirables. It's definitely faster than importing everything into LR first. But once the obvious crap is gone, I find that LR provides much better tools for pruning it further, so I can mark some candidates for keeping and deleting and then go thorough them a few times before making the final decision.

You can also do it in the import dialogue (which is how I do it). Either to add the current import to an existing collection or to create a new collection with those images in it.

Then, you can use the navigation pane on the left of the main interface (in any tab) to switch between collections - which you can then filter further with the filter tools in the bottom right.

VV Edit: If the photos are already imported, you can right click on any selected set of photos and there's an Add to Target Collection option in the context menu. You set a target collection by right clicking on it in the navigation pane and your current target collection has a + sign after the name.

Actually dragging photos from the bottom bar is hilariously fussy. If you just click and drag, that won't work. If you click on one of the overlay icons, that won't work either.

You have to take care to click on the image itself, pause for a fraction of a second to wait for the cursor to change, and now you can successfully move a picture or selection of pictures into a collection.

Maybe I'm being dumb and I missed something, maybe I've picked up a random setting somewhere without realising it but, I've found a weird thing with Lightroom Classic since the update. Previously, if I edited an image from a collection in an external editor, the edited image would also be added to the same collection. Lr would create a stack with the original master image and the version output by the external program. If I go back to some older collections, I can see the original CR2 files from the camera import and the tiffs that Ps or ColorEfex or whatever spat out all sitting together in the collection.

When I edited the last set, I opened quite a few of the images as smart objects in Ps. As expected, when I saved the image in Ps and came back to Lr, there was a stack with the original raw image and the Ps tiff. However, then I closed Lr and reopened it a bit later. Now I can see the externally edited tiffs in the actual folder where the original raws were, I can see them in the publish service (Flickr in this case), but if I go to the collection - either in the develop or the library modules, I can only see the raws (with Lr edits).

I tried Googling this but I can't see any documentation about this change. Am I being a huge idiot? is this actually a thing?

I literally just did this and the exported file was stacked just fine with my originals, even after a Lightroom restart. So either there's a hidden key binding (I couldn't find anything) or LR just glitched out on you.

Speaking of:

I just tested it again with a different (older) collection and it worked just fine so I guess that Lr had some weird issue when I closed it randomly. It's strange because after I spotted the issue with this most recent collection, I checked another collection that I'd done some external editing in since the split with Classic CC and the new Cloud CC thing, and that collection also didn't contain any of the externally edited tiffs. Other collections do however and so does the new one I made to test it.
