Geektox posted:I know we got a bunch of Portlandgoons up in here: Touristy places to shoot: Japanese Garden & Rose Garden (close to each other), Pittock Mansion, Old Town (for your street shots of homeless people), Multnomah Falls & Vista House (outside of town). Blue Moon Camera has interesting cameras on display but their prices are pretty high so I wouldn't go planning on buying anything. The other camera shops in town are more utilitarian (Pro Photo Supply, Citizens Photo) or just plain suck (Camera World).

I'm going to be doing a road trip through PA next week. I plan on visiting Centralia again, and then heading out to Fallingwater. I'm wondering what I should do after that. I don't really want to go to Pittsburg, but I don't know if I want to roam around eastern Ohio (is there anything there?) or go north up to PA Route 6 and drive home that way. Ideally I want to photograph rural/rustic scenes and/or abandoned/urbex stuff.

Eastern Ohio has a ton of blight, depending on where you are. A number of areas between Cleveland and Youngstown are pretty depressed so you should find plenty of abandoned places. Being Ohio, you'll find rustic/rural stuff pretty much everywhere. If you push in a bit, College of Wooster (go fightin' scots ) is a very nice campus and is located in a fairly rustic town itself. There are some Amish areas around there as well but I don't know specifically where. I think they're towards Ashland.

I'm visiting my friend in Tucson right now and I've already been to the Desert Museum with my camera, but my appetite for Arizona photos is not yet sated. Would love to find a saguaro cactus without animal damage all over the bottom 5 feet of it if possible, but I'm open to whatever. Any locals have thoughts to share?

I'm driving from Chicago to Philadelphia in the middle of September.. I've driven Pennsylvania before along I-80 and I-70, loved the trees and farmland (especially once it got into the hilly areas). Thinking of taking a day or two to meander around, is there any must-see landscapes? Also I really hate the new google maps, the old version you could browse the map and look for clusters of photos to find popular places but the new one is a steaming pile of whatever random poo poo they feel like throwing at you.

You could always stop in Centralia. I don't think that's too far off of 80.

I knew it, goons won't be happy until I'm dead in a fiery sinkhole. And yeah, getting off the interstates is definitely good. You can't really "see" a place until you drive the rural roads. Looking into Centralia..

Come visit Toledo! We've got... well.... uh.... hmm. gently caress. Joking aside we have a kickass zoo and museum with a big glass pavillion. Also Mr. Winston Cat resides here.

I'm going to Philly in a few days, what streets/neighbourhoods have a lot of foot traffic? What areas have enough light to shoot handheld after dark?

Any tips for San Francisco or Washington, D.C.? I'll have a full week to explore SF and will also hit up across the bay / Muir Woods, so I can be flexible. DC though I'll only have one day and it'll have to be near the national mall or in the area directly north.

Go get wasted on South Street. I spent a weekend in the early 00's in Philly at a bar called Tattooed Mom. It's across the street from a sketchy porn shop so we bought a giant penis shaped pinata and wandered into the bar. We made everyone reach in a pick a "prize", mostly flavored lube, condoms, and gum with dirty jokes on it. Had a blast.

Sounds like the perfect use for an on-the-cheap timelapse. Set up a P&S in the corner running at one shot every 5 seconds. Sooner or later somebody will spot it, pick it up, and wave it drunkenly around the bar while the girl with blue hair pulls teeny-tiny penis-shaped candles out of a red glass bowl shaped like a vulva. You're gonna have a blast.

Honestly if you only have three days in Paris and are thinking of visiting the Louvre, seriously reconsider it. Your time would be better spent just walking around the streets. Seconding Montmartre and surrounding areas. The Centre Pomidou has a killer view from the top as well.

Or just go to Belushi's and get drunk on cheap 1664. Bonus points because almost everyone there speaks English. Another thing you can do is take the train out to a day trip to see a battlefield like Vimy Ridge or something.

Any ideas for places to shoot near Vegas (besides the usual haunts of Hoover Dam, Neon Boneyard, etc). I've heard good things about shooting at Valley of Fire. Fremont Street is the only place in the city worth shooting. The Neon Boneyard sucks and is several hundred dollars to shoot in for like an hour and you can't touch anything or get close to the signs. Valley of Fire is really pretty.

Yeah, I heard that to get a good experience at the Louvre you need a whole day or more, so it'll have to wait until next time. For now I've gotten some good locations in addition to those I had already chosen. I really have more like 2 and a half days, because of arrival and dumping everything at the hotel. The route 66 segment between Kingman and the California border (it's labeled as state route 10 now) is worth a drive too. It's one of the most insane twisty roads I've been on, kind of a mindfuck to sit there and consider that it was once considered the main route to LA. Oatman is a neat stop on the west side of the pass. It's a couple hours from Las Vegas though, so it will take a good chunk of the day to visit. xzzy fucked around with this message at 16:56 on Jul 25, 2014 |

North Vegas is a garbage dump, but you might get some shots out of it. If you don't mind going as far as Kingman, check out Chloride AZ. Go to the Pinball Hall of Fame, it's the best thing Vegas has going for it that basically no one visits. burzum karaoke fucked around with this message at 17:50 on Jul 25, 2014 |

Well it's a lot less Pennsylvania than I originally intended, but Maryland/West Virginia seems to have a lot of neat stuff to see so I figured I'd give that area a shot because I've never been there. Still has a decent chunk through the Appalachian portions of Pennsylvania at least. Gonna zigzag the poo poo out of those states. Lots of old structures, forested areas, waterfalls, all kinds of cliched poo poo to point a camera at.
