Its ok, a solid 5/10 film

Oh ya thats it. Its nothing special but like u said a good popcorn flick. The story is pretty good despite it being really low budget.

Coherence is also superb. I showed it to so many friends. Going blind into Coherence is also recommended if you show it to anyone.

For time travel stories, there's also Predestination. I enjoyed that greatly.

Speaking of Triangle, why does she start killing everyone else on the ship? I get that one of her future selves told her to but I don't understand where that idea came from to begin with. I think there was a throwaway line about how once everyone dies, then they will come back. But what gave her that idea? .

Predestination was good, but a little predictable. Once you see a covered face in a time travel movie like in Triangle, TimeCrimes, or Predestination, it's pretty obvious that it'll end up being the main character from the future. Also I forget why he ended up becoming the bomber at the end. Maybe the same paradox I'm misunderstanding from Triangle? .

Annabelle: Creation premiered at the LA film festival to overwhelmingly positive reviews. Apparently the narrative, jumps, and characters are all top notch. I'm really stoked for this.

I don't know the actual details, but what I read on these forums is that some guy wrote a book which was a fictionalized account of the historical characters that The Conjuring is based on. This book was written before the films, and the films contain fictional details that were in the book but not in real life. So he's suing them, because even though they say "we just based this off the same historical source material as you" they clearly plagiarized some things from his book.

But if the Annabelle doll isn't something that was in his book, then presumably they can keep churning those out.

On topic: I recently watched A Cure For Wellness. Not amazing, very pretty. Worth a watch. I think it has some focus issues, but I like a lot of the visuals, so...

Seconded. It's a bit of a slog at two and a half hours, but it's very pretty. It might've helped to have a more active protagonist who actually pieces together the mystery instead of just being handed new information every twenty minutes by a supporting character. It's doubly frustrating that the movie so obviously telegraphs all its big reveals. The wait for the protagonist to piece together what the audience has known for the past forty minutes is killer.

But it's very pretty, and it's entertaining enough for a single watch. Give Gore Verbinski more money so he can make more very pretty movies, please.

There are also a lot of things that just don't seem to make sense and are only in the movie as "misdirection". Which is annoying, because when you've figured out what's going on, and they do something that doesn't make sense, and then the reveal of what's going on confirms that it doesn't really make sense is just like... why is this two and a half hours? Cut out the parts that only exist for misdirection and make it two hours!!!

Here's what I remember about Annabelle: shots of the doll not moving, combined with a bunch of shots where they slowly zoom in on the dolls motionless face

Annabelle 1 was not a good movie, but the already creepy phenomenon of storage lockers in apartment building basements has been made irrevocably more horrifying for me probably for the rest of my life thanks to it.

It wasn't a particularly inventive sequence, but man, it did things to the people I saw it with.

I saw The Conjuring 2 for the first time last week and I really just don't get what makes these movies so popular. They're competently made, and entertaining enough for a lazy Sunday, sure. But how they ended up making hundreds of millions is baffling to me, they're just so average. I guess one of the biggest things is Wilson and Farminga, the chemistry they have is very good.

some of the shots of the house are kind of cool, but honestly i can't remember much of the plot at all. and what i think i remember ends up being from insidious, anyway.

The twist in The Conjuring 2 where it turns out the ghost is an unwilling puppet of the demonic force who doesn't actually want to haunt the family. is pretty neat but on the whole the first film is a lot stronger.

For fun put on The Enfield Haunting right after you finish a view of Conjuring 2. Conjuring makes the Warrens into aw shucks superhero Americans whose sheer temerity and goodness hold a terrorized family together. Man Warren even steps in during a pivotal scene to become a temporary acoustic strumming "cool" singin' dad for the widow's family.

Enfield's portayal of the Warrens (well, their stand-ins) is somewhat less... heroic.

I think you nailed it 1) competently made and 2) the chemistry between Wilson and Farminga.

James Wan knows how to make incredibly creepy shots and jump scares, too. I'll see The Nun and The Crooked Man when they come out as well.

That scene was so dumb because it was obviously done to show off the male lead's voice since he used to do musicals.

One thing I appreciate about the Conjuring films is that they don't shy away from the implication that if there are demons then there is probably a God. At times they almost feel like Christian films with the Warren's questioning the family about whether the children are baptized and what not. I feel like too many films try to avoid the implication, probably out of fear of being perceived as being religious films but the Conjuring films seem to operate on the idea that Christianity is 100% correct and there are actually demons trying to corrupt and destroy us. Which is admittedly skeevy and silly as all hell but it all makes sense within the films themselves.

I know the screenwriters are religious but is Wan himself a Christian?

Far as I can tell he hasn't necessarily attached himself 2 a religion but certainly says he's religious.
