I think the rule of thumb for crowd shots is you want the faces so the viewer can see the reactions or at the very least avoid feeling like a stalker. Like in that one shot you posted if you pretend the people at the bottom are cropped out, it looks better because you got that huge line of people on the background hill spectating. It doesn't save the shot and you can't make out any expressions, but it feels a little better to me.

True. I just liked the idea of it, you know? And didn't want to trash it, I suppose. Should've planned it better at the time, but I was actually just passing by that spot and didn't stick around to photograph it properly, just long enough to snap a couple of photos.

But yeah, there's no saving it now in post, even with extreme crops.

Is a 300mm f/4 overkill for youth sports? Bet your rear end it is. Am I gonna use it anyway and bring both the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters?

Not quite sure which one I enjoy the most. After they scored they ran towards me and celebrated 1.5 meters infront of me.

I think I'm gonna politely decline the next time I get asked if I want to shoot an indoor event.

It used to be my bread and butter, but it's either been too long or the light in this venue was especially bad or to be honest, probably a combination of both.

At least it wasn't Telenor Arena. Hard downcast light that removes any sign of eyes.

Thankfully, for me, we probably won't make it to the cup final so I will be spared from having to go to Telenor Arena.

Bumping this from the grave yard because one of the local J-League soccer clubs in the Tokyo area is selling special “photographer’s section” seats for a match coming up in a couple weeks in collaboration with Nikon.

https://twitter.com/frontale_staff/status/1577961184212357121

  • Tickets are 11,000 JPY (~$80 with exchange rate now), 8 seats were available this week
  • Its explicitly for photographers - rules of buying and using the seat include no smartphone photos, no asking for autographs, not to interrupt play, and no wearing away team items
  • It will go forward rain or shine, so truly one for the hardcore
  • They’re also offering the chance to rent Nikon Z70 bodies and 80-400 lenses

Wish I had the time to go try, might be fun.

Have any clubs elsewhere done similar? This is really the first I’m hearing of it.

NERF THIS!

Started taking photos of my local indoor flat track roller derby team in the spring of 2023. I've gotten better at shot framing and cropping, not to mention improving working the exposures. For their indoor games at a basketball gym, shooting 1/250" at f2.8 and 2000 ISO seems to get right on proper exposure, or maybe a touch under, depends on the focal length. Outdoor practice is a headache because their place is not well lit, I just give up once the sun goes down.

My shots aren't as fancy as the pro photog who comes out rocking the Canon full-frame DSLR and a bunch of remote flash equipment, but the team really likes them, and that's all that matters.

A few more showed up while I was standing there shooting, and I chatted with them for a minute. I asked if they minded when somebody showed up with a camera and they said they didn't worry about it all. I wasn't at all surprised, but it's nice to get confirmation from time to time that I'm not sending off creepy vibes with my 300mm/F4. I couldn't easily communicate with the surfers in the water so I was mostly relying on one of them telling me via angry gestures if my camera wasn't welcome.
