Steve Earle is a great political songwriter.

quote:

Jimmy joined the army ‘cause he had no place to go
There ain’t nobody hirin’
‘round here since all the jobs went
down to Mexico
Reckoned that he’d learn himself a trade maybe see the world
Move to the city someday and marry a black haired girl
Somebody somewhere had another plan
Now he’s got a rifle in his hand
Rollin’ into Baghdad wonderin’ how he got this far
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

Bobby had an eagle and a flag tattooed on his arm
Red white and blue to the bone when he landed in Kandahar
Left behind a pretty young wife and a baby girl
A stack of overdue bills and went off to save the world
Been a year now and he’s still there
Chasin’ ghosts in the thin dry air
Meanwhile back at home the finance company took his car
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

When will we ever learn
When will we ever see
We stand up and take our turn
And keep tellin’ ourselves we’re free

Ali was the second son of a second son
Grew up in Gaza throwing bottles and rocks when the tanks would come
Ain’t nothin’ else to do around here just a game children play
Somethin’ ‘bout livin’ in fear all your life makes you hard that way

He answered when he got the call
Wrapped himself in death and praised Allah
A fat man in a new Mercedes drove him to the door
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbi2rMQveHo

quote:

It's Christmastime in Washington
The Democrats rehearsed
Gettin' into gear for four more years
Things not gettin' worse
The Republicans drink whiskey neat
And thanked their lucky stars
They said, 'He cannot seek another term
They'll be no more FDRs'
I sat home in Tennessee
Staring at the screen
With an uneasy feeling in my chest
And I'm wonderin' what it means

So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now

I followed in your footsteps once
Back in my travelin' days
Somewhere I failed to find your trail
Now I'm stumblin' through the haze
But there's killers on the highway now
And a man can't get around
So I sold my soul for wheels that roll
Now I'm stuck here in this town

There's foxes in the hen house
Cows out in the corn
The unions have been busted
Their proud red banners torn
To listen to the radio
You'd think that all was well
But you and me and Cisco know
It's going straight to hell

So come back, Emma Goldman
Rise up, old Joe Hill
The barracades are goin' up
They cannot break our will
Come back to us, Malcolm X
And Martin Luther King
We're marching into Selma
As the bells of freedom ring

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISFNTRaXRiI

quote:

I'm just an American boy raised on MTV
And I've seen all those kids in the soda pop ads
But none of 'em looked like me
So I started lookin' around for a light out of the dim
And the first thing I heard that made sense was the word
Of Mohammed, peace be upon him

chorus:
A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
There is no God but God

If my daddy could see me now – chains around my feet
He don't understand that sometimes a man
Has got to fight for what he believes
And I believe God is great, all praise due to him
And if I should die, I'll rise up to the sky
Just like Jesus, peace be upon him

chorus

We came to fight the Jihad and our hearts were pure and strong
As death filled the air, we all offered up prayers
And prepared for our martyrdom
But Allah had some other plan, some secret not revealed
Now they're draggin' me back with my head in a sack
To the land of the infidel

A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
A shadu la ilaha illa Allah

Burnin It Down

'Fore I was born, there were no limitations
Said my goodbyes at the greyhound station
Here I am half a mile from where I grew up
In a parking lot sittin' in my pickup truck

And I'm thinkin' bout burnin' it down, boys
Thinkin' bout burnin' it down
Nothin's ever gonna be the same in this town…

Ten gallons of gas and a bottle of propane
I took the lighter off my grill and I still can't
Say for certain that this thing'll blow.
But if it does I'm gonna be the first one to know.

I'm thinkin' bout burnin' it down, boys
Thinkin' bout burnin' it down
Nothin's ever gonna be the same in this town
I'm thinkin' bout burnin' the Walmart down.

Always used to say I'd come back some day and settle down.
I'm getting old. Got no place to go. It's all come unwound.

So I'm watching' the faces comin' and goin'
Some of them strangers some that I know and
It doesn't matter how much, how long I wait.
Cause the door's always open and it's never too late.

And I'm thinkin' bout burnin' it down, boys
Thinkin' bout burnin' it down
Nothin's ever gonna be the same in this town
And I'm thinkin' bout burnin' it down, boys
Thinkin' bout burnin' it down
Nothin's ever gonna be the same in this town
I'm thinkin' bout burnin' the Walmart down.
Thinkin' bout burnin' the Walmart down.
I'm thinkin' bout burnin' it down.

When I came back from Luang Prabang
I didn't have a thing where my balls used to hang,
But I got a wood medal and a fine harangue.
Now I'm a loving hero.

Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.
Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.

And now the boys all envy me:
I fought for Christian Democracy
With nothing but air where my balls used to be.
Now I'm a loving hero

Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.
Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.

When one and twenty cannon thunder
Into the bloody wild blue yonder
For a patriotic ball-less wonder.
Now I'm a loving hero.

Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.
Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.

In Luang Prabang there is a spot
Where the corpses of your brothers rot,
And every corpse is a patriot,
And every corpse is a hero.

Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.
Mourn your dead land of the free!
If you want to be a hero follow me.

"Let him speak!"
Thought this was just a chill tune but there's a message there.

quote:

Never got love from a government man
Heading downstream till the levee gives in
What can I do to get the money
We ain't got the money, we ain't gettin' out

Heading downstream till the levee gives in
And my dreams are wearin' thin
All I need's relief
I need, I need some sympathy

Look at me
I just can't believe
What they've done to me
We could never get free
I just wanna be, I just wanna be
Look at me
I just can't believe
What they've done to me
We could never get free
I just wanna be,
I just wanna dream

All of my life been wadin' in
Water so deep now we got to swim
Wonder will it ever end
How long, how long till we have a friend

Comin' down, feelin' like a battery hen
Waves won't break till the tide comes in
What will I do in the sunrise
What will I do without my dreams

Look at me
I just can't believe
What they've done to me
We could never get free
I just wanna be, I just wanna be
Look at me
I just can't believe
What they've done to me
We could never get free
I just wanna be
I just wanna dream

We're all together in the same boat
I know you, you know me
Baby, you know me
We're all together in the same boat
I know you, you know me
Baby, you know me
We're all together in the same boat
I know you, you know me
Baby, you know me
I just wanna dream...
Baby, you know me

You should have stayed at home yesterday
Ah-ha words can't describe
The feeling and the way you lied

These games you play
They're going to end in more than tears some day
Ah-ha Enola Gay
It shouldn't ever have to end this way

It's eight fifteen
And that's the time that it's always been
We got your message on the radio
Conditions normal and you're coming home

Enola Gay
Is mother proud of little boy today
Ah-ha this kiss you give
It's never ever going to fade away

Enola Gay
It shouldn't ever have to end this way
Ah-ha Enola Gay
It shouldn't fade in our dreams away

It's eight fifteen
And that's the time that it's always been
We got your message on the radio
Conditions normal and you're coming home

Enola Gay
Is mother proud of little boy today
Ah-ha this kiss you give
It's never ever going to fade away

If you don't know what the song's about, you don't deserve to be posting in DnD.

The true romance is the ideal repression, that you seek,
That you dream of, that you look for in the streets,
That you find in the magazines, the cinema, the glossy shops,
And the music spins you round and round looking for the props.
The silken robe, the perfect little ring,
Will gives you the illusion when it doesn't mean a thing,
Step outside into the street and staring from the wall
Is perfection of the happiness that makes you feel so small.
Romance, can you dance? D'you fit the right description?
Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you want me for your own?
Do you love me? Say you need me, say you know that I'm the one,
Tell me I'm your everything, let us build a home.
We can build a house for us, with little ones fellow,
The proof of our normality that justifies tomorrow.
Romance, romance. Do you love me? Say you do,
We can leave the world behind and make it just for two.

Love don't make the world go round, it holds it right in place,
Keeps us thinking love's too pure to see another face.
Love's another skin-trap, another social weapon,
Another way to make men slaves and women at their beckon.
Love's another sterile gift, another poo poo condition,
That keeps us seeing just the one and others not existing.
Woman is a holy myth, a gift of mans expression,
She's sweet, defenceless, golden-eyed, a gift of gods repression.
If we didn't have these codes for love, of tokens and positions,
We'd find ourselves as lovers still, not tokens of possessions.
It's a natural, it's a romance, without the power and greed,
We can fight to lift the cover if you want to sow and seed.
Do you love me? Do you? Do you? Don't you see they aim to smother
The actual possibilities of seeing all the others?
Do you love me? Do you? Do you? Don't you see they aim to smother
The actual possibilities of seeing all the others?

I call it bullshit, you know, I still cannot believe it
Our evolution now has gone the way of hate
A world evolved resolved in this stupid fate

Stop this war
Stop this war

All so different yeah, I say we're all the same
All caught, you know, in the division game.
Self destruction fast impending like a bullet.
No one can stop it, once it's fired, no one can control it.

Stop this war
Stop this war

A final word, wait it's not a call to action
We ain't no sect, no, this ain't no loving faction.
Unity, unity, unity you've heard it all before.
This time it's not exclusive - we want to stop a war.

Stop this war
Stop this war

Ain't nothing wrong with another unity song
Ain't nothing wrong with another unity song
Ain't nothing wrong
Ain't nothing wrong
Ain't nothing wrong
Ain't nothing wrong with a unity song

Stop this war
Stop this war

The fear is growing there in the candlehouse. like a spreading serpent, tentacled and silent. we hear the speak of the angel as she settles on down to hallowed earth, saying, "Begin those labors of contentment and ease." as she walks forward, slowly. or is it the wind? chiming through the mobile composed of drifted wood? you ask a question... collecting shells along the pebbled beach cannot have paved the way for this afternoon's fright. oh no... although our eyes find acute solitude while affixed on the oyster shell. the vision all around. enveloping the shell is indeed a chaotic slaughter of color and black definition. there is an explosion, a crashing rain, and a collapse of earth. burning white as sun bleached sand on the eyes of the metallic incense. the snow is beginning to fall. many particled and infinite. the snow is meeting the hardended clay and sand. many particled and infinite. in many instants of transformational kissing, the snow meets the creek. there is a man trudging his shattered way along the far side of that creek. moving closer, we see that the man has been beaten and bloodied. although it is well into the early hours of darkness, we see that the man is a black man. an African who has been enslaved. an African who has been enslaved and broken from his mother's side. a human being dragging frozen iron chains and ankle braces through the near freezing water of the creek. earlier he had made the decision that frozen feet are better than feet ripped worn. ripped and shredded worn by the mouths of crazed bloodhounds. so now he trudges. a curse can be heard coming from the man's palsied lips. candlehouse. like a spreading serpent, tentacled and silent. we hear the speak of the angel as she settles on down to hallowed earth, saying, "Begin those labors of contentment and ease." as she walks forward slowly. or is it the wind? or is it just the wind chiming through the mobile? a curse can be heard coming from the man's palsied lips. the snow will soon be collecting on the ground. and when that happens, the hunters won't even need the aid of the tracking dogs anymore, but they'll keep them. you can hear them say, "ain't nothing like a friend of the family before the dog..." drat the snow. inspired and driven by his hallowed sister moon. breaking this container as the dogs break the container. coccoon. i am alive. after its recession there is a deepness to the tide. after a life of spirit's tangibility has died. after the lungs. after the cold. after the cold when they poison their heads deep. like the spring. as afterwards the words still ring. as afterwards the words still ring.

When Karl Marx was a boy
he took a hard look around
He saw people were starving all over the place
while others were painting the town
The public spirited boy
became a public spirited man
So he worked very hard and he read everything
until he came up with a plan

There'll be no exploitation
of the worker or his kin
No discrimination 'cause of the color of your
skin
No more private property
It would not be allowed
No one could rise too high
No one could sink too low
or go under completely like some we all know

If Marx were living today
he'd be rolling around in his grave
And if I had him here in my mansion on the hill
I'd tell him a story t'would give his old heart
a chill

It's something that happened to me
I'd say, Karl I recently stumbled
into a new family
with two little children in school
where all little children should be
I went to the orientation
All the young mommies were there
Karl, you never have seen such a glorious sight
as these beautiful women arrayed for the night
just like countesses, empresses, movie stars and
queens
And they'd come there with men much like me
Froggish men, unpleasant to see
Were you to kiss one, Karl
Nary a prince would there be

Oh Karl the world isn't fair
It isn't and never will be
They tried out your plan
It brought misery instead
If you'd seen how they worked it
you'd be glad you were dead
just like I'm glad I'm living in the land of the
free
where the rich just get richer
and the poor you don't ever have to see
It would depress us, Karl
Because we care
that the world still isn't fair

Come And See

We're all awash in a sea of blood, and the least we can do is wave to each other.

The 80's were a strange time.

Mel Brooks - It's Good To Be The King
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8SDOwpENyg

quote:

Now get down people and listen to me
Gonna tell you how I made history
You can call me Louis, I'm the king of France
Check out my story while you do your dance
Now in seventeen hundred and eighty-nine
The peasants were starving, but I was fine
We were hanging out, down in old Versailles
That's the week end pad of my Queen and I
In the alleys of Paris they was eating rats
But it was filet mignon for the aristocrats
There were Dukes and Counts and Barons and Earls
I gave them the titles but I kept the girls
Blondes, red heads, wild brunettes
Ladies-in-waitin', I didn't wait to get
There was truffles for breakfast, toast for brunch
The line of the Folies Bergère for lunch

(Ooh yes, it's good to be the King)
(Ooh La La)
(Gee, but it's good to be the King)
Say it girls
(You can be sure about one thing)
(Ooh La La)
(Mais oui, it's good to be the king)
It's good to be the king

(Ah Ooh Ah Ooh)

Well the palace was rockin', we were doing it good
When we heard there was some trouble in the neighborhood
I wasn't too worried, no big deal
You step out the line, Jack, you're in the Bastille
The party kept swinging all day and all night
The champagne was flowing, we was feeling all right
They were screaming for bread, things started to shake
But Marie-Antoinette said (Well let 'em eat cake!)
Now the rabble wouldn't have it, they was angry with me
They built a big old razor called the guillotine
Then the people all shouted, "We'll have our day"
"Down with dirty water, give us Perrier!"
I said the more you want, things might get screwy
But they'll never lay a finger on good King Louis
Just keep your cool, don't fret, don't freak
I say Hey!
(Say what?)
C'est magnifique!

(Ooh yes, it's good to be the king)
(Ooh La La)
(Gee, but it's good to be the king)
Your fantasy is my reality
(You can be sure about one thing)
(Ooh La La)
(Mais oui, it's good to be the king)
It's good to be the king

(Ooh)
Night and day comme vous voulez
(Ooh)

Well they broke down the gate in one massive assault
And the party came to a grinding halt
They took the midgets and the freakies with the girls and all
And the boys said, "Louis, it's time to go"
They put my neck on the block, they took off my wig
And It occurred to me this was the end of the gig
They asked me did I have any last words to say
Well, I raised my head and I hollered "Hey!"

(Ooh yes, it's good to be the king)
(Ooh La La)
(Gee, but it's good to be the king)
Well c'est la vie, make that la mort
(You can be sure about one thing)
(Ooh La La)
(Ooh yes it's good to be the king)
Well it was good while it lasted
(We can be sure about one thing)
(Ooh La La)
(Mais oui, it's good to be the king)
It's good to be the king!

Come on, you'd do it, you know you'd do it
Everybody does it
I just did it, I'm ready to do it again!

Mel Brooks - To Be Or Not To Be
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbKTdVpnGj8

quote:

(Heil! Siegety Heil! Heil! Siegety Heil! Heil!)
Heil myself!
(Siegety Heil! Heil! Siegety Heil!)

Well, hi there people, you know me
I used to run a little joint called Germany
I was number one, the people's choice
And everybody listened to my mighty voice
My name is Adolf, I'm on the mic
I'm gonna hit you with the story of the New Third Reich:
Well, it all began down in Munich town
And pretty soon the word started getting around
So I said to Martin Bormann, I said "Hey Marty
Why don't we throw a little Nazi party?"
So we had an election, well, kinda sorta
And before you knew it, hello new order!
To all the little mothers in the Fatherland
I said "Achtung baby! I got me a plan."
They said "What you got, Adolf? What you gonna do?"
I said "How about this one? World War Two."

To be or not to be
Oh baby, can't you see
We're gonna take it to the top
You're making history
And it feels so good to me
Ooh darling, please don't ever stop

Don't be stupid, be a smarty
Come on and join the Nazi party!
(Party!)

Like Humpty Dumpty over that wall
All the little countries they began to fall:
Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Poland
The troops were rockin' and the tanks were rollin'
We were swinging along with a song in our hearts
And Deutschland über Alles was making the charts:
We had a new step called the goosestep we were marching to
Well, it's sorta kinda like a German boogaloo;
I was getting what I wanted but it wasn't enough
So I called the boys, I said "Boys, get tough!"
And I surrounded myself with some unusual cats:
There was skinny little Goebbels, and Göring, Mr. Fats
Let's not forget old Himmler and Hess
You'd better believe we made a hell of a mess
Saying "Heil! Heil! Siegety Heil!
We're gonna rip it on the people Teutonic-style!"

To be or not to be
Oh baby, can't you see
We're gonna make it to the top
You are our destiny
This thing was meant to be
Why don't we do it till we drop?

Say, your boots ain't black and your shirt ain't brown
Get back, Jack, you can't get down!

(Do it Adolf, do it!)

I drank wine from the Rhine with the finest ladies
And we did it in the back of a black Mercedes
I was on a roll, I couldn't lose
Then came D-day, depression and blues
The Yanks and the Brits started raising Cain
Those guys were the pits, drove me insane;
People all around me started swallowing pills
Let's face it folks, we was going downhill
Berlin was crumbling, we was under the gun
Time to look out for number one
So I grabbed a blonde and a case of beer
Said "The Russians are coming, let's get outa here!"

To be or not to be
Oh honey, can't you see
We had to take it to the top
You sure made history
And it felt so good to me
Ooh scheisse, please don't ever stop

Auf Wiedersehen, good to see ya
Got a one-way ticket to Argentina!

It's not D&D without B-Movie.

Gil Scott Heron posted:

Well, the first thing I want to say is: Mandate my rear end!

Because it seems as though we've been convinced that 26% of the registered voters, not even 26% of the American people, but 26% of the registered voters form a mandate or a landslide. 21% voted for Skippy and 3, 4% voted for somebody else who might have been running.

But, oh yeah, I remember. In this year that we have now declared the year from Shogun to Ray-gun, I remember what I said about Ray-gun, I meant it. Acted like an actor. Hollyweird. Acted like a liberal. Acted like General Franco when he acted like governor of California, then he acted like a Republican. Then he acted like somebody was going to vote for him for president. And now we act like 26% of the registered voters is actually a mandate. We're all actors in this I suppose.

What has happened is that in the last 20 years, America has changed from a producer to a consumer. And all consumers know that when the producer names the tune, the consumer has got to dance. That's the way it is. We used to be a producer - very inflexible at that, and now we are consumers and, finding it difficult to understand. Natural resources and minerals will change your world. The Arabs used to be in the Third World. They have bought the Second World and put a firm down payment on the First one. Controlling your resources will control your world. This country has been surprised by the way the world looks now. They don't know if they want to be Matt Dillon or Bob Dylan. They don't know if they want to be diplomats or continue the same policy of nuclear nightmare diplomacy. John Foster Dulles ain't nothing but the name of an airport now.

The idea concerns the fact that this country wants no-stalgia. They want to go back as far as they can - even if it's only as far as last week. Not to face now or tomorrow, but to face backwards. And yesterday was the day of our cinema heroes riding to the rescue at the last possible moment. The day of the man in the white hat or the man on the white horse - or the man who always came to save America at the last moment - someone always came to save America at the last moment - especially in "B" movies. And when America found itself having a hard time facing the future, they looked for people like John Wayne. But since John Wayne was no longer available, they settled for Ronald the Ray-gun, and it has placed us in a situation that we can only look at - like a "B" movie.

Come with us back to those inglorious days when heroes weren't zeros. Before fair was square. When the cavalry came straight away and all American men were like Hemingway - to the days of the wondrous "B" movie. The producer underwritten by all the millionaires necessary will be Casper "The Defensive" Weinberger - no more animated a choice is available. The director will be Attila the Haig, running around frantically declaring himself in control and in charge, the ultimate realization of the inmates taking over at the asylum. The screenplay will be adapted from the book called "Voodoo Economics" by George "Papa Doc" Bush. Music by the "Village People" the very military "Macho Man."

A theme song for saber-rattling and selling wars door-to-door. Remember, we're looking for the closest thing we can find to John Wayne. Clichés abound like kangaroos - courtesy of some spaced out Marlin Perkins, a Ray-gun contemporary. Clichés like, "itchy trigger finger" and "tall in the saddle" and "riding off or on into the sunset." Clichés like, "Get off of my planet by sundown!" More so than clichés like, "he died with his boots on." Marine tough the man is. Bogart tough the man is. Cagney tough the man is. Hollywood tough the man is. Cheap steak tough. And Bonzo's substantial. The ultimate in synthetic selling: A Madison Avenue masterpiece - a miracle - a cotton-candy politician…Presto! Macho!

"Macho, macho man!"

Put your orders in, America. And quick as Kodak, your leaders duplicate with the accent being on the dupes - cause all of a sudden we have fallen prey to selective amnesia - remembering what we want to remember and forgetting what we choose to forget. All of a sudden, the man who called for a blood bath on our college campuses is supposed to be Dudley "God-drat" Do-Right?

"You go give them liberals hell Ronnie." That was the mandate to the new Captain Bligh on the new ship of fools. It was doubtlessly based on his chameleon performance of the past: as a Liberal Democrat. As the head of the Studio Actor's Guild, when other celluloid saviors were cringing in terror from McCarthy, Ron stood tall. It goes all the way back from Hollywood to hillbilly. From Liberal to libelous, from "Bonzo" to Birch idol, born again. Civil rights, women's rights, gay rights: …it's all wrong. Call in the cavalry to disrupt this perception of freedom gone wild. God drat it, first one wants freedom, then the whole drat world wants freedom.

No-stalgia, that's what we want - the good ol' days, when we gave'em hell. When the buck stopped somewhere and you could still buy something with it. To a time when movies was in black and white, and so was everything else. Even if we go back to the campaign trail, before six-gun Ron shot off his face and developed hoof-in-mouth. Before the free press went down before full-court press, and were reluctant to review the menu because they knew the only thing available was...Crow.

Lon Chaney, our man of a thousand faces: no match for Ron. Doug Henning does the make-up; special effects from Grecian Formula 16 and Crazy Glue; transportation furnished by David Rockefeller of the Remote Control Company. Their slogan is, "Why wait for 1984? You can panic now...and avoid the rush."

So much for the good news….

As Wall Street goes, so goes the nation. And here's a look at the closing numbers: racism's up, human rights are down, peace is shaky, war items are hot. The House claims all ties. Jobs are down, money is scarce, and common sense is at an all-time low on heavy trading. Movies were looking better than ever, and now no one is looking, because we're starring in a "B" movie. And we would rather had...John Wayne. We would rather had...John Wayne.

Have we done Ton Steine Scherben? As a bonus, this version includes a reprise of Brecht's "Einheitsfront Lied." My German ain't so great but I'll do my best with a translation.

Macht Kaputt Was Euch Kaputt Macht (Destroy What Destroys You):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3YXXVnGu_c

quote:

Radios laufen, Platten laufen
Filme laufen, TVs laufen
Reisen kaufen, Autos kaufen
Häuser kaufen, Möbel kaufen
Wofür?

Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!
Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!

Züge rollen, Dollars rollen
Maschinen laufen, Menschen schuften
Fabriken bauen, Maschinen bauen
Motoren bauen, Kanonen bauen
Für wen?

Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!
Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!

Bomber fliegen, Panzer rollen
Polizisten schlagen, Soldaten fallen
Die Chefs schützen, Die Aktien schützen
Das Recht schützen, Den Staat schützen
Vor uns!

Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!
Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!

Und weil der Mensch ein Mensch ist,
drum braucht er was zu essen, bitte sehr!
Es macht ihn ein Geschwätz nicht satt,
das schafft kein Essen her.

Drum links, zwei, drei!
Drum links, zwei, drei!

Drum links, zwei, drei!
Drum links, zwei, drei!
Wo dein Platz, Genosse, ist!
Reih dich ein in die Arbeitereinheitsfront
Weil du auch ein Arbeiter bist.

Und weil der Prolet ein Prolet ist,
drum wird ihn kein anderer befreien,
es kann die Befreiung der Arbeiter
nur das Werk der Arbeiter sein.

Admittedly-a-bit-poo poo translation:

Radios running, records running,
Films running, TVs running,
Buying trips, buying cars,
Buying houses, buying furniture
What for?

Destroy what destroys you!
Destroy what destroys you!

Trains rolling, dollars rolling
Machines working, people toiling
Building factories, building machines,
Building motors, building guns
Who for?

Destroy what destroys you!
Destroy what destroys you!

Bombers flying, tanks rolling
Police beating, soldiers falling
Protecting the bosses, protecting the stocks,
Protecting the Right, protecting the state
From us!

Destroy what destroys you!
Destroy what destroys you!

Because a man is a man,
He needs something to eat, if you please!
Idle talk doesn't fill him up:
That doesn't bring food here.

So, left! Two, three,
So, left! Two, three,
Wherever your place is, comrade!
Line up for the Worker's Unity Front
Because you're a worker, too.

Because a man is a man,
He doesn't want a boot on his face.
He doesn't want to see slaves under him,
Or lords over him.

So, left! Two, three,
So, left! Two, three,
Wherever your place is, comrade!
Line up for the Worker's Unity Front
Because you're a worker, too.

Because the worker is a worker,
No one else will free him.
The freeing of the worker can
Only be the act of the worker.

So, left! Two, three,
So, left! Two, three,
Wherever your place is, comrade!
Line up for the Worker's Unity Front
Because you're a worker, too.

Hi friends! Many thanks to everyone who has posted in the D&D Music Thread! I really dig a lot of the songs that have been posted, and I decided to make another contribution to this thread by recording myself performing a hip-hop rap song about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea by artist and aspiring revolutionary Marcel Cartier! The title of the song is "Bomb Threat." I first learned about Marcel Cartier when he was interviewed by George Galloway on the Sputnik show on RT, and I have since become a big fan of his music. I think it's fitting to highlight this song about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on Martin Luther King Day because the DPRK has a history of expressing its solidarity with the oppressed Black population of the U.S. in general and the Black Panthers in particular.

Anyway, here's the recording of myself performing "Bomb Threat" by Marcel Cartier:

And here are the lyrics:

I'm turning on the news and I'm seeing all this bullshit
Conservatives and liberals are yappin' all that useless
even most you leftists are spewing your excuses
talkin' all that noise, "North Korea acting ruthless"
Imagining scenarios, "oh, they gonna nuke us!"
the truth is, you got no context to your rumors
backward positioning of who is the aggressor
who is on whose border with an arsenal of weapons
who controls the military of the country next to it
who is self-defending, who is acting negligent
they like to paint the north as a kingdom, prison camp
that is quite ironic when the number one prison land
is really my own country, the U.S. imprisons more
than any other country in world history before
and that you can't deny, but still I'm sure you'll try it
reality is simple, Washington is the real tyrant

Chorus (X2)
Korean conflict, yeah there's a bomb threat
you got the sides wrong though, look how it started
look at the facts, who's suffered the hardest
three to four million who dearly departed

Verse 2
You think the Democratic People's Republic of Korea
is utterly paranoid, they got a type of fever
like they got a natural liking for weapons
this when we need history to simply step in
we know Korean launched a war against Japan
to thrust off colonial rule from its land
but with the Japanese now defeated, who is next?
The U.S. and Britain now stepping in the trench
the Chinese and Soviets came to the defence
of the liberation forces who knew by common sense
that western imperial powers chase their interests
never there for genuine purposes or missions
the independence forces were led by Kim Il Sung
the Workers' Party and the people became one
they saw this leadership as restoring their dignity
still you love to talk about "they brought in the tyranny"

Verse 3
The U.S. dropped more bombs north of DMZ
than were used in all of World War 2 collectively
every single building in Pyongyang was leveled
think of that when they say "the north has gone mental!"
a fascist government was established in the south
the U.S. military still positioned throughout
they simulate yearly the bombing of the north
you know in D.C., they can't wait to pop the cork
and hence the reason why, they need to demonize
it seems to work so well even leftists on their side
wanna a world without nukes, yeah for sure
but the U.S. got 5,000 or maybe more
Korea got a right to have them as long as we do
no time for double standards, this "gotta play by our rules"
I got more in common with the people of Korea
than I do with my own government, drat right -- believe it

And here's a youtube link to the original Marcel Cartier version of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBfeP_g0H90

Listen Mr. Bilbo – Pete Seeger (not a great version)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wjPykXUG4A

quote:

Listen, Mr. Bilbo, listen to me
I'll give you a lesson in history.
Listen and I'll show you that the foreigners you hate
Are the very same people made America great.

In 1492 just to see what he could see,
Columbus, an Italian, looked out across the sea.
He said, Isabella babe, the world is round,
And the U.S.A.'s just a-waiting to be found.

In 1609 on a bright summer's day,
The Half Moon set anchor in old New York Bay.
Henry Hudson, a Dutchman, took a good look around;
He said, "Boys, this is gonna be a helluva town."

When the King of England started pushing Yankees around,
We had a little trouble up in Boston town.
There was a brave Negro, Crispus Attucks was the man;
Was the first one to fall when the fighting began.

Colin Kelly was a pilot flying down low;
Levine pushed the button that let the bomb go.
They sunk the Haruna to the bottom of the sea;
It was foreigners like those kept America free.

Now Bilbo, you're taking one heck of a chance;
Your good friends, the Duponts, came over from France.
Another thing, I'm sure, will be news to you,
The first Mister Bilbo was a foreigner, too.

Well, you don't like Negroes, you don't like Jews;
If there is anyone you do like, it sure is news.
You don't like Poles, Italians, Catholics, too;
Is it any wonder, Bilbo, that we don't like you!

Surella d'Irlanda (My Sister of Ireland) by Canta U Populu Corsu (The Corsican People is Singing), " In tribute to Bobby Sands and his companions who died in English jails", from 1978.

quote:

S'hè infiarata la mio rima chi n'aghju tamanta pena
Hè scritta nant'un giurnale a disgrazia chi ti mena
Ti casticheghja l'Inglese chi ti strigne la catena
Surella d'Irlanda.

Sò figliola di sta terra è aghju listessa sorte

È l'ordine culuniale mi hà cundannatu à morte
Surella d'Irlanda.

È to notte sò sangue è ammantate di dolu
Quandu ghjunghje la mitraglia qual'hè ch'ùn si sente solu
Una sera in Bastia m'anu pigliatu un figliolu
Surella d'Irlanda.

Paura ùn ne cunniscia chi figliolu era d'onore
Ma quandu l'anu intravatu s'hè strappatu lu mio core
Ma francaraghju lu mare per sparghje lu mio terrore
Surella d'Irlanda

Un ghjornu ci scriveremu quandu a pace turnerà
Quandu a mente sarà sciolta per pudecci abbraccià
È stu mondu d'inghjustizia ghjurgu ch'ellu cascherà
Surella d'Irlanda.

Translation I made from a French translation I found:

quote:

My rhyme is inflamed, this causes me great sorrow,
The shame that strikes you is written on the paper,
The English is punishing you and is tightening your chain,
My sister of Ireland

I am a daughter of this land and I share your fate,
My jail is French, with silent gates,
And the colonial order condemned me to death,
My sister of Ireland

Your nights are bloody and covered by a veil of grief,
Who doesn't feel alone when gunfire resonates,
One evening in Bastia, they took my son,
My sister of Ireland

He didn't know fear, as he was a man of honour,
But when he was taken my heart was torn apart,
But I'll cross the sea to spread my terror,
My sister of Ireland

One day, when the peace will be back, we will write,
When our spirits will be freed, as an embrace,
And this world of injustice will fall, I swear to you,
My sister of Ireland

Hi friends! I've recorded myself singing a country-style version of the Italian communist song titled "Bandiera Rossa!" Check out this video of myself wearing a cowboy hat and singing a country-style version of Bandiera Rossa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLAj8GyD8Dk

And here are the lyrics to Bandiera Rossa, as song by myself in the video that I linked to in this post:

Avanti o popolo, alla riscossa
Bandiera rossa, bandiera rossa
Avanti o popolo, alla riscossa
Bandiera rossa trionferà.

Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Evviva il socialismo e la libertà!

Degli sfruttati l'immensa schiera
La pura innalzi, rossa bandiera
O proletari, alla riscossa
Bandiera rossa trionferà.

Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Evviva il comunismo e la libertà!

Dai campi al mare, alla miniera
All'officina, chi soffre e spera
Sia pronto è l'ora della riscossa
Bandiera rossa trionferà.

Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Evviva il comunismo e la libertà!

Non più nemici, non più frontiere
Sono i confini rosse bandiere
O socialisti, alla riscossa
Bandiera rossa trionferà.

Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Bandiera rossa la trionferà
Evviva il comunismo e la libertà!

Thanks to Marxists dot org for the lyrics to Bandiera Rossa! And many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Debate & Discussion Music Thread!

Forgot this thread existed or I would've posted this here at the time. Either way, UB40's first album, Signing Off. was legitimately a great reggae album. It came out in August 1980, over a year into Thatcher's government, and the album's lyrics were quite socially and politically scathing in that context. Take their song 'Little By Little':

quote:

Poor man's anger rising
The ostrich hides his head
Soon the red blood will be boiling
And blue blood will be dead

While we say
Little by little by little
And stone by stone
Rich man's mountain
Comes crumbling down

Poor boy sleeps on straw
The rich boy sleeps in bed
That fat boy fills his belly
My poor boy's a dead

While we say
Little by little by little
And stone by stone
Rich man's mountain
Comes crumbling down

The rich man drives his car past
The poor man on bare feet
Oh, that rich man do get what he wants
The poor must know defeat

Little by little by little
And stone by stone
Rich man's mountain
Comes crumbling down

Also of note is 'Madam Medusa':

quote:

From the land of shadows
Comes a dreadful sight
Lady with the marble smile
Spirit of the night

See the scourge of innocence
Swinging in her hand
Hear the silent suffering
Echoes through the land

From the tombs of ignorance
Hates and greed and lies
Through the smoke of sacrifice
Watch her figure rise

Twinging in her shadow
The sick, the poor, the old
Basking in her radiance
Men of blood and gold

In her bloody footsteps
Speculators prance
Men of dreams are praying
For that second chance

Round her vacant features
Gilded serpents dance
Tree of evil knowledge
Sprouts a special branch

It's a very good album. I'd strongly advise you to give it a listen when you can.

quote:

You gentlemen who think you have a mission
To purge us of the seven deadly sins
Should first sort out the basic food position
Then start your preaching, that's where it begins

Your lot who preach restraint and watch your waist as well
Should learn for once, the way the world is run
However much you twist or whatever lies that you tell
Food is the first thing, morals follow on

So first make sure that those who are now starving
Get proper helpings when we all start carving
What keeps mankind alive? What keeps mankind alive?
The fact that millions are daily tortured
Stifled, punished, silenced and oppressed

Mankind can keep alive thanks to its brilliance
In keeping its humanity repressed
And for once you must try not to shrink the facts
Mankind is kept alive by bestial acts

So I pray, though I'm tired
But this can't wait, so we fight

[Verse 2]

Easy to save it when you don't need a drat thing
Talking 'bout Jesus but yopu treat people dead wrong
Looking for answers but you singing the same song
Your economics well they sure need a change
You know drat well those CEO's need no raise
Freedom and justice well they ain't your play thing
Prop up your puppets and you kill the real king

[Hook]

Fight, fight

[Verse 3]
I hear my mama calling all the way home
I'm no hurry go on push it right on
Yeah I'm a soldier but I don't use a gun
Out on them [?] my daddy kept one
They say you earn a penny, each one you save
Won't mean nothing when you're down in the grave
You know the ends don't really justify means
Prop up your puppets and defy the real queen

The opening track & video of US death metal band Nile's newest album has taken a definite anti-ISIS slant. Probably not indicative of a resurgence of politics in the genre as a whole though.

Nile - Call To Destruction

Nile - Call To Destruction posted:

Call to destruction!

Call to destruction of the symbols of paganism
Grand monuments of idolatry
We must tear down these blasphemous edifices of Heathenism
We must annihilate all that is pre-Islamic
We must complete what the Sahabi Amr Bin Al As could not

We must tear down these relics of infidelity
Great and mighty works of blasphemy
Mountains of ancient heresy
Sacrilege encased in stone
From thousands of years before the prophet

The pyramids must be torn down, demolished, erased
The ancient symbols of human civilization
Must be pummeled to the ground
Call to destruction!

We must become as the prophet himself
Who demolished the Kaba Temple to erect a Mosque
And Al As who laid waste to the Library of Alexandria
Burning a vast accumulation of ancient knowledge
Existing long before the Quran
Before the Quran
Before the Quran

The preservation of human heritage
And the enduring achievements of Mankind
Are secondary to the will of Allah
We must eradicate all that is not in accordance
With the writings of the Messenger
We shall abrogate these architectures of profane ideology
Engage the destruction machines

We shall unwrite all human histories of Heathen origin
We must become as like as unto the prophet himself
Who beheaded hundreds of apostate Qurayza
We must cut off the head of the Sphinx
Timeless guardian of the ancient Pharaohs
Whose mere existence is a blasphemy unto Allah

The pagan idols and statues which fill our lands
Must be removed, stuck down, dismantled, demolished, obliterated
Their priceless remains desecrated and violated
Everything of their ancient profanation must be wiped off from the face of the Earth

Call to destruction!
Call to destruction!
Call to destruction!

All pyramids must be torn down
The preservation of human civilization
And the enduring achievements of mankind
Are secondary to the will of Allah

Tumble out of bed
And stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life

Jump in the shower
And the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets, the traffic starts jumpin'
For folks like me on the job from 9 to 5

Workin' 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'

They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it

9 to 5
For service and devotion
You would think that I
Would deserve a fat promotion

Want to move ahead
But the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is
Out to get me, hmmm

They let you dream
Just a watch 'em shatter
You're just a step on the boss man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away

In the same boat with a lot of your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in
And the tide's gonna turn
And it's all gonna roll you away

Workin' 9 to 5
What a way to make livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'

They just use your mind
And you never get the credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it

9 to 5
Yeah, they got you were they want you
There's a better life
And you think about it, don't you?

It's a rich man's game
No matter what they call it
And you spend your life
Putting money in his wallet

9 to 5
Oh, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'

They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it

reminds me of 'all used up':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx0xg32qf6c

quote:

I spent my whole life making somebody rich
I busted my rear end for that son of a bitch
and he left me to die like a dog in a ditch
and told me I'm all used up
he used up my labor he used up my time
he plundered my body an squanered my mind
and gave me a pension of handouts an wine
an told me I'm all used up

my kids are in hock to a God called work
slavin their lives out for some other jerk
my youngest in frisco just made shipping clerk
an he don't know I'm all used up
young people reaching for power an gold
don't have any respect for anything old
for pennies they're bought and promises sold
someday they'll all be used up

they use up the oil they use up the trees
they use up the air an they use up the seas
well how bout you friend an how bout me
what's left when we're all used up
I'll finish my life in this crummy hotel
It's lousy with bugs and my God what a smell
but my plumbin still works an I'm clear as a bell
Don't tell me I'm all used up

outside my window the world passes by
it gives me a handout an spits in my eye
an no one can tell me cause no one knows why
I'm livin but I'm all used up
sometimes in my dreams I sit by a tree
my life is a book of how things used to be
an kids gather round an they listen to me
an they don't think I'm all used up

an there's songs an there's laughter an things I can do
an all that I've learned I can give back to you
I'd give my last breath just to make it come true
no I'm not all used up
they use up the oil they use up the trees
they use up the air an they use up the seas
well how bout you friend an how bout me
what's left when we're all used up

Hi friends, thanks again to everyone who has posted in the Debate and Discussion Music Thread! I have made a video of myself singing a cover of a new song by David Rovics titled "Apocalypse (There Won't Be Any Zombies)". I'm a huge fan of David Rovics and this new song he has written. Here is the video of myself singing David Rovics's "Apocalypse" song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6_I6yT6AX4

And here are the lyrics:

Apocalypse (There Won't be Any Zombies) by David Rovics posted:

Wars raging across the seven seas
Millions and millions of refugees
Millions dead or living in tents
Or crowding into cities being sucked dry for the rent
Thousands sinking to the ocean floor
Or dying in the desert escaping civil wars
Fascists attacking centers for asylum
Dying if they stay, dying if they come

Rains stopped falling, drought is the new norm
Aquifers depleted, dust rising in a storm
Hottest year ever, again and again
Millions of acres on fire, taking lives of firemen
Towns evacuated, houses burning
Here and everywhere, wind speeds rising
Turning the air into a smoky haze
When you wake up these days

There won't be any zombies in the actual apocalypse
And it's gonna look a lot like this

Ice caps melting, north and south
Pesticides flowing into the river mouth
Last of the oil being drilled
The last frontiers being killed
Food prices rising high
If you're rich you pay, if you're poor you die
And the dead just die, and then stay dead
Whether you starve or get a stake through your head

Chorus

Wealth gap stratifying
Whole ecosystems killed and dying
Politicians on TV sets
Looking just like marionettes
Drowning in debt, swimming in treasure
Desperate times, desperate measures
Raising alarms, building walls
United we kneel, divided we fall

Chorus

And here is the original video of David Rovics performing this new song with his groovy guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCqa8q1As-Q

I hope I'll be able to keep spending the Apocalypse and also spend the last days of my life lurking and/or posting on these here Something Awful Forums! Thanks again to everyone for keeping the Debate & Discussion Music Thread alive!

You know I would try to think of something funny to put here but ill just pass on that and threaten people with a + 2 board with a nail in it.

Last call for alcohol.
Last call for your freedom of speech.
Drink up. Happy hour is now enforced by law.
Don't forget our house special, it's called a Trickie Dickie Screwdriver.
It's got one part Jack Daniels, two parts purple Kool-Aid,
and a jigger of formaldehyde
from the jar with Hitler's brain in it we got in the back storeroom.
Happy trails to you. Happy trails to you.

I am Emperor Ronald Reagan
Born again with fascist cravings
Still, you made me president

Human rights will soon go 'way
I am now your Shah today
Now I command all of you
Now you're going to pray in school
I'll make sure they're Christian too

California Uber alles
Uber alles California

Ku Klux Klan will control you
Still you think it's natural
friend of the family knockin' for the master race
Still you wear the happy face

You closed your eyes, can't happen here
Alexander Haig is near
Vietnam won't come back you say
Join the army or you will pay

California Uber alles
Uber alles California

Yeah, that's it. Just relax.
Have another drink, few more pretzels, little more MSG.
Turn on those Dallas Cowboys on your TV.
Lock your doors. Close your mind.
It's time for the two-minute warning.

Welcome to 1984
Are you ready for the third world war?!?
You too will meet the secret police
They'll draft you and they'll jail your niece

You'll go quitely to boot camp
They'll shoot you dead, make you a man
Don't you worry, it's for a cause
Feeding global corporations' claws

Die on our brand new poison gas
El Salvador or Afghanistan
Making money for President Reagan
And all the friends of President Reagan

I am your plumber
No I never went away
I still bug your bedrooms
And pick up everything you say
It can be a boring job
To moniter all day your excess talk

I hear when you're drinking
And cheating on your lonely wife
I play tape recordings
Of you to my friends at night

We've got our girl in bed with you
You're on candid camera
We just un-elected you

[Chorus]
I am the owl
I seek out the foul
Wipe 'em away
Keep America free
For clean livin' folks like me

If you demonstrate
Against somebody we like
I'll slip on my wig
And see if I can start a riot
Transform you to an angry mob
All your leaders go to jail for my job

But we ain't the Russians
Political trials are taboo
We've got our secret
Ways of getting rid of you
Fill you full of LSD
Turn you loose on a freeway

[Chorus]

Send you spinning
Send you spinning
Send you spinning all over the freeway
Spinning on the crowded freeway
Spinning on the freeway
Spinning on the freeway
Spin
Spin
Spin-Lookout

The press, they never even cared
Why a youth leader walked into a speeding car
In ten years we'll leak the truth
By then it's only so much papaer

Watergate hurt
But nothing really ever changed
A teeny bit quiter
But we still play our little games

We still play our little games
We still play our little games
We still play our little games
We still play a lot of games

I am the owl

So I think "Les Brigandes" is a right-wing French band. And I think their song called "cannabisation nationale" is promoting the idea that the campaign to legalize weed is part of a Jewish conspiracy to make non-Jews more docile and easier to control. But I'm not sure because I don't know French! It is a catchy song, though.

Yeah they have some very interesting songs and music videos. The music video for their song titled "Le rat jeze" features a giant rat dancing around while wearing various costumes. Then the rat gets burnt at the stake at the end of the video. I think the message of the song is that Pope Francis and all of the Jesuits should be burned at the stake because the Jesuits are involved in a New World Order conspiracy, and perhaps the replacement of Pope Benedict XVI with Pope Francis was part of this conspiracy. But I don't really know what the song is about because I don't understand French!

Pretty strange concept. Some videos with English subtitles:
Let Russia live
Lord, I don't want to become Charlie (To drive home the evil of Francois Hollande they depict him with a skull cap and prayer shawl).
How we become an American(sic).

Christ, I wish their lyrics weren't so loving horrible, because their music is actually quite good. They remind me a bit of Big Star.

e: because I realised I'm posting without a song, have a very appropriate song by the Dead Kennedys, Nazi Punks gently caress Off.

quote:

Punk ain't no religious cult
Punk means thinking for yourself
You ain't hardcore cos you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head

Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
gently caress off!

Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
gently caress off!

If you've come to fight, get outta here
You ain't no better than the bouncers
We ain't trying to be police
When you ape the cops it ain't anarchy

Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
gently caress off!

Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
gently caress off!

Ten guys jump one, what a man
You fight each other, the police state wins
Stab your backs when you trash our halls
Trash a bank if you've got real balls

You still think swastikas look cool
The real Nazis run your schools
They're coaches, businessmen and cops
In a real Fourth Reich you'll be the first to go

Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
gently caress off!

Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
gently caress off!

You'll be the first to go
You'll be the first to go
You'll be the first to go
Unless you think

The opening track & video of US death metal band Nile's newest album has taken a definite anti-ISIS slant. Probably not indicative of a resurgence of politics in the genre as a whole though.
