It's hard to think of Letterman and Leno as once great stand-up comics. i dunno, it follows a pretty well-worn path of talented and creative people getting picked up to do a blander, more mass-marketable version of whatever it was they were doing in the first place

So when I would see Leno in movies where they wanted a little 'current events' style verisimilitude I thought he was an actor film studios would hire to do a talk show host shtick. It was years before I found out that he wasn't a lame parody. this is literally in, i think, independence day, and nothing else
