The only things I really liked in this movie were when the guns came out and the story. The martial arts was "good" I guess but it didn't hold my attention and kind of just went on too long. A good example was the fight in the prison. I honestly thought that was a dream he had because it was so dumb. Someone asked about the gangster part of the movie. This is really the only part I liked. Bejo was a loving prick and I hated him but I wanted to know what wsa going to happen next. Sleeping dogs the movie would be awesome. Any other good gangster type movie kinda like this that focus more on guns less on martial arts? I really hate martial arts in movies ever since I started watching a lot of MMA. It doesn't feel as visceral.

I also wish they'd done something more with Not-So-Mad Dog other than introducing him and then almost immediately killing him off in order to advance the plot.

I just saw the Raid and its sequel for over the last two evenings and cannot think of better fight scenes I have ever seen in movies. The action is so crisp and clean while being brutal, I never felt like I couldn't see what was going on and everything was extremely well lit and staged. I normally don't have this opinion about things, but I definitely agree that all of the Praskos content could have been cut ("Machete" Fight, the restaurant with his wife, the Bar) and the plot could have just been Uco/Bejo initiating the gang war by assassinating GoTo's men instead of faking an attack on Praskos. This serves the 3 purposes of reducing the overall run-time dramatically, introducing the mini-bosses and the boss monsters much earlier and making them seem more a part of the story and removing a huge chunk of "The main character is nowhere to be seen for unknown reasons" stuff. While I think those fights were the weakest in the film the Machete scene was pretty cool to watch and Mad Dog is an awesome guy that has given us a really beautiful celebration of violence by choreographing these unreal fights and if sticking Praskos's story into the middle of the movie is how they chose to honor him then that is ok with me, but I really think it would be better. I think the tattoo thing was a misfire that muddles things unnecessarily but if they had shown the dude from prison with his mouth sewn shut or his tongue cut out it would have made that much clearer instead of just accepting that he is gonna get his throat slit no matter what and blowing Bejo's plan isn't gonna help anything. Excellent films, will RAID again.

So, car chase sequence pretty much rocked my tits. Gonna give another watch tonight, but if anyone ever asks for an action movie, I know just what to put on.

Something I spotted on a rewatch, when he chases down the pornographer and hurls him into a TV it's shot in exactly the same way as the thoughtless destruction of the apartment by the machete thugs in the first film.   It's only momentary, but it's another visual reminder of where Rama is on the moral spectrum now. Also, holy poo poo that last fight is bananas.

The music and choreography of that scene also closely echo the Mad-Dog fight. Rama uses a lot of moves Mad Dog does, especially his throws. It's also structured oddly. The typical pattern would be the hero getting his rear end kicked until he or she manages to make a comeback. The first few good shots are all landed by Rama. The siblings stage a comeback, but it isn't enough. When Hammer Girl dies after a moment of vulnerability (via losing her glasses) Baseball Bat Man's cry is genuine anguish, rather than pure rage. A lot of martial arts movie tropes are very deliberately inverted in that scene. It isn't a mindless action movie. The action itself tells a lot of the story.

I like it martial arts movies with story where the story was good. The story in the Raid 2 just wasn't that good and alot of time was spent on it. To be fair the story in the original also wasn't that good but almost no time was spent on it. I will say in general, one of my major problems with the movie is Rama himself. He is just sort of a flat character that has about as much personality as he does in the first one. It's odd to hear that Evans couldn't get the film to work and thought adding Rama was the solution because Rama really feels like a secondary character for a large part of the film and he's not given much to do. He literally seems to be inserted just for the purpose of kicking everyone's rear end at the end, which in itself is not a part of the movie that seems to really be activated by anything in particular. It really does feel like he was put in there to solve some script problems but it wasn't really done with any elegance. In general I kind of still want to give the movie another go, seeing as I was underslept and in a bad mood when I originally saw it, not to mention the people sitting near me were loving obnoxious, but two and a half loving hours is alot of time to put aside to give a movie another chance.

I had the opposite experience, the crowd I watched it with made the viewing twice as enjoyable.

When I heard Yayan was returning, I got him confused with the tracksuit guy with the two linoleum knives when I saw the trailers.

Agreed, even approaching the end of the year I still think this is my favorite movie from this year. For me it's not so much about stuff needing to be cut and more about the plot being pretty not interesting. I'm not saying the plot that's here didn't need this much time to tell itself as much as the plot didn't engage me at all so any time spent away from punching people just bored be and this movie being so long didn't help that. And to be fair the original also didn't have a story or characters that really engaged me either but a dramatic smaller percentage of the movie really focused on that combined with it just being an overall shorter movie, so there it didn't really effect much for me.
