I'm in charge of planning a bachelor party for a trip to New Orleans in November. Basically the bachelor wants to party on Bourbon Street, drink, eat food, and go see wildlife/something interesting. Does anyone have any good hotels they can point me towards? We need to either be on Bourbon Street or next to Bourbon Street.

I've stayed at The Roosevelt and The Queen and Crescent and would highly recommend both of them. Both within walking distance of bourbon street, although they may not be quite what you're looking for. As a bonus, they're both within walking distance of Mothers, one of the best breakfast spots in the city.

Mothers loving sucks. I honestly don't get the hype for that place. Cafe du Monde for breakfast/4 th meal or bust. Port of Call for lunch (great burgers, really...) for the Neptune's Monsoon, which will get you super toasted... For titty bars, hit Ricks' Cabaret up during the day. The dancers there were the same ones at penthouse, but it was much less crowded, cheaper, and classier. That said, Penthouse was great too! For hotels, consider airbnb... See thread in travel subforum. If that's not your thing, I have had really good luck with the Clarion inn on Canal Street. It's not right next to Bourbon, but it's only a couple blocks and has some great party room options (3 king beds) relatively inexpensive. If you must be on Bourbon, the Royal Sonesta is pretty nice and right off Bourbon. For cheap sightseeing, my wife and I really enjoyed riding the St. Charles streetcar through the Garden/historic (don't remember which) district and getting strawberry daiquiris towards the end of the line. For more cultured taste, the ww2 museum, Audubon aquarium, and zoo are supposed to be REALLY nice, but I never was able to make it to any of those when I lived down that way. OP did you get any additional ideas for New Orleans? My husband and I are planning a vacation there end of October--- I figure we would hit up some music/jazz places, go on a haunted walking tour thing, go shopping at various places. I heard that there is a music fest called the Voodoo ... something or other that starts end of October, beginning of November. When are you planning on going?

Hey, good timing. I just agreed to go on a last-minute road trip with some friends of mine for this weekend. They all make over six figures and I probably won't be able to hang with them in several of the places they end up; casino hotels I especially want to avoid. I'm staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in the French Quarter, apparently. Where can I go get drunk and have a good time on the cheap?

For music, check out WWOZ's livewire calendar: http://www.wwoz.org/new-orleans-community/music-calendar Most of the venues will be on Frenchman street, which is next to the French Quarter, in the Marigny. If you can catch the shows, don't miss Kermit Ruffins, Rebirth Brass Band, or John Boutte. You can also just walk around the Frenchman St. jazz clubs until you hear something you like and walk on in. The good shows start early, but you can hear music REAL late there. I don't know about haunted walking tours, but a good friend of mine, does buggy tours that start opposite Cafe du Monde in Jackson Square. She's funny and tells the history of New Orleans really well. If you go this route, tell her Kyle sent you: http://buggyconfederacy.com/ Not sure what you want to shop for, but if you just wanna browse you can walk anywhere in the Quarter and be surrounded by tons of tourist shops and antique shops. If you want a voodoo shop, there's only one actual practicing voodo shop in the Quarter and that's Voodoo Authentica. For random chachkies, go to the French Market, it starts at Cafe Du Monde and goes for 5 or 6 blocks. Voodoo Fest starts on Halloween, but it isn't just local acts. It's more of a music festival than Jazz Fest is. Actually, I just glanced through the artists this year and the only local to NOLA artist I saw was Big Freedia. She does bounce music. Don't take the kids, lol. Aliquid posted:Hey, good timing. I just agreed to go on a last-minute road trip with some friends of mine for this weekend. You can party on Bourbon Street, but it will be bros and daiquiris. The one Bourbon Street bar I'd visit would be Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop. It's oldest bar in the US, it was owned by the famous pirate, and it uses gas lighting instead of electricity. It's REALLY cool. Andro fucked around with this message at 05:35 on Aug 27, 2014 |

Aliquid posted:This sounds nice. Any tips on finding blues and avoiding students? I don't know about finding blues music. Isn't it kind of dead? I'm into higher energy stuff like bounce music, brass bands, and more eclectic jazz. Honestly, you'd probably just have to check the WWOZ livewire that I posted above and look for something that sounds bluesy. Sorry. If you want to avoid students, then you should just avoid Bourbon. There will be students on Frenchman, but it's a mostly locals and some tourists. Bourbon is just tourists and locals that work there. Definitely walk down Bourbon to take it all in, but I wouldn't suggest partying there unless you hate money and love vomit. Seems like you wanna drink on the cheap and NOLA is one of the best places in the world to do it. Here's a list of my favorite cheap bars in the Quarter. I like Lafitte's for atmosphere and hurricanes, if it's not busy. Another cheap drink stop would be Molly's at the Market. It's usually full of locals that work in the Quarter and it's a good stopping point to get a go-cup before walking to Frenchman for the night. For crazy blackout inducing tropical drinks, go to Port of Call. Their burgers are alright, too. If you wanna drink classic NOLA cocktails (sazerac, mint julep, Pimm's cup, etc.) go to the Napoleon House. By the way, NOLA is NOT just the Quarter. It's a huge city. If you have time, definitely check out areas outside of the Quarter. I'd suggest at least going to the Gardens District to check out the old southern mansions. Also, head to Uptown to check out Magazine Street and some of the universities and parks. Both places area beautiful.

If you're looking for a tour, I'd suggest a bike tour with these guys: http://confederacyofcruisers.com During our visit last year we went on their culinary tour, which was totally awesome itself. But then they also became an informal concierge service over the next few days and would text us about different events and recomending places to eat. It was super helpful and we saw a lot more of the city than would have alone.

For some ri-loving-diculously good jazz at a killer price, go to the Snug to see Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra (they play about every Wednesday). Crazy good musicians playing the opposite of elevator jazz in a small intimate venue for cheap. Any other city they'd be $70 a ticket and you couldn't even drink beer while you watch em. Get a hand grenade or hurricane from a window vendor on Bourbon, drink it, then go to the Absinthe House cause they're kitschy fun touristy things you can't do anywhere else. If you want fancy food, check out Atchafalaya. For some more breakfast around Bourbon, Cafe Beignet had some killer hash browns, sausage, and eclairs. Go to Cafe Du Monde for beignets though cause it's illegal to come in the New Orleans limits and not at least get coffee there. Gumbo Shop has solid..you guessed it..and gator sausage. Here's an incomplete checklist of things to try and eat while there: beignets, gumbo/jambalaya/etouffee, shrimp, gator, and muffaletta. Wildlife-wise - y'all know how the aquarium is these days? I know it used to be flippin great, but that was pre-Katrina.

It's good, but if you've been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium or the one in ATL, you're probably not missing much except for the Mississippi River exhibition. They've got some cool albino alligators in it. If you've gotta choose between the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium, pick the aquarium. The zoo was a mess when I went. Better than all this: book a seat on a deep sea charter boat an get your fish on. LA is the sportsman's paradise after all.
