This may be one of the hottest junk yard finds of all time! But first a brief history.

I posted a thread about my 87 supra in which I swapped a 1jz twin turbo into from a soarer into, spent countless thousands of dollars on, drove 6 months and sold for 5800. Sorry I never got back to the thread, I suck. I wanted it to be an on going build thread but, I just couldn't keep with it. I'll try to stay with this thread, but it won't be a very active build. We just had a baby so funds are nill, and I'm doing my best to be a grownup.

After selling the soup, I decided it would be sweet to own my first German car, as I am a technician for Audi. It was a 98 jetta, swapped with a vr6 and manual trans, slammed on coils, needed a lot of mostly electrical work. Paid way too much and sold it just to get rid of it. I'll need a lot more excess cash to even consider buying another Vw or Audi, I'd rather own my own house first.

Until then, I'll stick with dirt cheap toyotas!

A friend of mine just casually mentioned he had an AWD Toyota in his dads yard they got from an elderly family friend. I checked it out and fell in love. Even though fuel was actively pouring out of the chassis line that had rusted out. So for the ok price of 900 bucks, the title was mine. Original title from the dealer with 12 miles. 95k when I bought it, currently 106k miles. It's dreadfully slow with the 4afe engine and auto trans, but it shifts great. After a few thousand miles, one of the non-serviceable u-joints in the THREE PIECE prop shaft took a poo poo. Had a not so local shop replace the faulty joint, and it's mostly vibration free. As far as I can tell, the center diff is active, as it would barely move with the prop shaft out, so I guess it's safe to say it's mostly rwd. The thing had a brand new air filter in it when I got it. I switched to full synthetic oil which, believe it or not, made a huge power difference. I'd say the odds are, I won't be squeezing any viable power out of it with any upgrades, so I'll have to just dream of a 20v 4 age swap.

The car is ridiculously clean. The sun however has taken its toll on the dash, and there's a rip or two in the sides of the front seats. Very minimal rust. On the underside, however, every rubber joint is toast, but holding together as it doesn't clank over bumps and is very smooth up to 90mph.

Other keep-it-going repairs include: cutting fuel line and replacing with rubber fuel line and clamps for fuel leak. At the very same place, I clamped in a universal fuel filter to keep the rust from the tank out of the injectors. Also replaced all 4 13 inch tires with brand new kumhos for 60 bucks a piece.

To-do list for this week or next(will update with pics):
Timing belt kit(belt, tensioner, all three serp belts)
Water pump
Coolant flush
Fuel pump(I really want to replace the tank, but can't find one for all wheel drive model)

I feel like I could start assembling a donor engine at any point, keeping it on the stand and cleaning it up, replacing gaskets, turbo or supercharging(lol) and take as much time as I need to. I really want to keep the all wheel drive set up so I would need something to that sort. By all means guys throw some input here!

I'll upload some more pics later, the headliner is in mint condition.

Post your all tracs, experiences, stories, and advice and/or ideas!

I've known one guy with one of these. He used it to tow his rallycross Corolla to and from events. It is an awesome car.

There's one for sale locally and I kinda want it - you stole that car.

Instead of replacing the tank you could probably pick up one of those POR15 fuel tank repair kits and slosh it around, I've seen it work pretty well on some older (motorcycle, but still) tanks.

It wasnt that bad, after you left I got to help put out the fire!

Nice! I didnt know they made any all-trac wagons before now. Looking forward to this thread.

Late 80' Toyotas, especially All-Trac anything, is a weakness of mine. That wagon is really clean, and you got a smoking deal on it. Interested to see what you decide to do with it.

Also, A/C has been charged up with r134 for a few weeks and blowing cold. Sitting in traffic it's a little tough to run and starts to get warm until you start actually driving. I've talked to some people on an Australian Facebook group, they claim that the body code is ae95, but my vin claims it's an ae94, making it possibly a pretty rare car.

As for the por15 tank kit, is this something that can be found at Advance? I'm sure it is

Probably not a very strong bottom end for this application.

I was thinking a naturally aspirated 20v 4age with ITBs would be neat/cheaper than boost, and also more reliable. Like I said, if I do decide to swap, it's gotta be cheap and mostly drop in, something that can pop in in a day, and doesn't require additional tuning. I'm not looking to blow the tires off or anything.

Me @ your poasting

The All-Trac was massively popular in Australia, especially with the utilities companies. There were tons of white All Tracs around most of the 90s with either the power or water utilities companies signs on them.

I always wanted to get one and throw a 4AGE into it.

I guess I need to find a Civic RT4WD so we can drag race and do low 23s in the quarter.

Is a manual swap in the cards? I imagine that might help performance a bit.

^^^^ Australia is great

There's a write up somewhere where a guy put a 3sgte into one(not sure off top of my head what they came in). And a friend of a friend has a fully built 3s with standalone and big turbo he's trying to get rid of with spare parts, but it's more of a squeeze requiring some fabrication of an engine mount or two. Would be sweet, but out of my price range.

I'm cool with slowly building a junk yard 4age

Manual swap is a must! From what I have read, a donor 4age and trans will mate to the AWD platform, but I dint know anymore details

Edit: I was looking at a couple Tercel all tracs(which look a lot like the corolla just a little older) and found the manual trans had a longer output shaft, and a shorter, 2 piece shaft.

It's funny, it seems to be a 3 speed plus overdrive trans, so the over drive button I like to call the downshift button.

I think the manual ones also had a diff lock button.

I'm a terrible forums poster with terrible opinions.

Here's a cat fucking a squid.
I don't know if an engine swap is such a good idea - none of those Japanese AWD systems were meant to handle any more power than they came originally came with (the Honda one is the same which is why it only ended up on the single cam Civic and Integra)

Not necessarily - the Camry Alltrac shares most of it's AWD system with the turbocharged Celica Alltrac, which makes around double the horsepower / about 50% more torque of the Camry (3SGTE with 205+ horsepower, commonly tuned to around 300 or so HP without much issue, vs. the ~110 HP of the 3SFE in the Camry). If you crack the differential housings and swap over the Celica's LSD carriers, it is the same drivetrain.

Just be very nice on the 1 - 2 and 2 -3 gear changes. The syncros were pretty much toast on my alltrac's 2nd and 3rd gears when I got it. It seems to be a pretty common thing with early 90's japanese AWD transmissions, I remember my dad's old galant vr4 having the same problem.

It does have the locking diff button! And the light comes on and goes out when you push it! The owners manual says to leave it on unless you're getting a hook/tow.

I'm not looking for anything crazy power wise, 2-250 hp I'm sure will be more than enough. Worst case, the center diff doesn't make the cut and it either goes fwd or rwd. Preferably rear. In which case, lots of stuff can come from the ae86 crowd. Recommendations from others about suspension I believe recommended rear shocks and springs from an ae86 and then coilovers from another platform for the front.. Which seems sketchy but there doesn't seem to be any rear direct application for the DLX AWD wagon.

Mazda's AWD G-series transmission from the BG-chassis 323 GTX likes to poo poo the bed around 250 whp or so. As I recall, the case flexes and 3rd gear likes to go exploring outside the gearbox. The same thing happens in the FWD version too. There is a guy on clubprotege with an Escort GT that runs in the 10s and after he blew up a half-dozen G-series gearboxes (even after modifying the case and adding bracing where it flexes) he said "gently caress it" and did the fabrication necessary to use an E153 Toyota gearbox.
