This is the fifth year some friends and I have a very amateur rally race in a farmer's field, in northern Alberta. Generally most cars are under $500. Some of the guys are pretty good with mechanics (I am not) but my wife and I go for fun anyways. We usually dig up cars that run on their own without a ton of work but some guys work on their cars year round - they are the guys who win. Most of the top cars tend to be front wheel drive Japanese cars. Acura Integras are pretty common but there have been a couple Subarus (usually too heavy for the AWD to really make up the difference). The guys in charge keep loving with the format but most of the races this year were one on one affairs. I was racing and trying to film, so it was tough to get all the shots I wanted. I used a 98 Sunfire GT 5 speed last year, it was alright and survived, so I intended to use it again this year. While we were setting up the track, I was testing out the Sunfire to see how it handled the winter in the field. It was all good, so I promptly raced it around for 20 minutes in the heat, mostly sitting near redline. After it over heated, the valves (maybe) were making loud ticking noises, it had no power and would overheat in minutes. It also wouldn't hold idle so it made the prospect of flushing air out of the coolant tough. It died and I bought somebody's old 94 Integra for $50, it was much better. I've made a thread with pictures each year for the last few years, if anybody remembers. Anyways, here is this year's video I slapped together in iMovie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ai0euhoKfM EDIT - A few photos The wife and I with her 2nd gen Dodge Neon, $0 My 94 Acura Integra, $50. Yup, this thread rules. I'm a little surprised you were actually able to kill a J-body though, those things are anvils. That Impreza wagon is nicer than my southern AB one

Are you guys part of the cold war motor company? Or do any of those guys show up? http://coldwarmotors.blogspot.ca Sounds like it would be up their alley.

I'm becoming a Honda fanboy after how well their cars do and how long they last. The Sunfire only had 200 000 km, that Integra still runs good and is over 300k.

This is the best thing I've read all day. That looks like a ton of fun! Very cool, loved the video, just, yeah, jealous. Wish there was something like that around here, I'd happy blow $500 or less a year on a cheap beater for redneck rallying!

Is this out in Devon or more north than Edmonton? I would love to blow $500 racing like that.

This is the second year of the rally, I did not make this video. 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtjUKFufdpM Here's an evolution of my videos, shot using a Go Pro Hero HD 2, slapped together with whatever the most current version of iMovie was at the time. These are really the only videos I've ever worked on, so they go from no experience to some experience. 2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjRjC96KnhM 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh1KW974SKs Here's five minutes of raw footage from inside my 94 Integra against the other Integra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBPyX9s-RgI And some iPhone trailer I made for this year's rally when we were building the track and I forgot my Go Pro at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rFyiI5wyks

There's a group of guys doing pretty much this exact thing on private property in Devon. Sometimes they hit the oval at Castrol for special events too. I don't think they do multicar runs and its pretty much just come on down if you want, everyone's welcome.

This makes me want to do Goonball 3000 even more. Think of how much fun we could have!

One of my friends runs a mk1 mr2 in 2wd open. OP: Totally jealous.

Now I am curious to see videos of the aw11 running that course. This got me thinking, I know someone who has a bunch of property north of seattle and might just be crazy enough to let us setup a course. Gonna have to talk to him about this idea....
