For long sequences I think a video would be fine, if you only want to show some animation gifs are always welcome. (And like the guy above me said, if audio is needed, make video)

Reading this after the Deadly Premonition is... interesting, the best lp's for me are from these strange games that I would never play. I'm definitely going to read this until the end.

Update 7

We’re jumping slightly back in time in this update. I found that I could most easily get a certain event if I did some things in a different order. Whether we actually do it in this order or the order I set-up until the last update has no bearing on anything so just ignore the timestamp and assume they happened after last update.

First a little event at the sheriff's office.

: Did you know plants can understand us? If you talk to them nicely each day they grow beautifully.

: Is that true?

: It is! Why don’t you give it a try?

: Eeuhm, g-good day… Like that?

: Well, kind of.

No idea if this is important, but you never know.

When we drove Winona back home she mentioned a book Emma showed some interest in. Now’s a good time to go have a look at the High School library if we can find that book. We don’t have a name, but we know it’s a difficult, philosophical book! I bet that won’t stop our sleuth from figuring out which one that could possible be.

Mizzurna Falls High School

: Matthew! How unusual to see you heading for the library.

: Ms. Lidds?

Lidds Holden: A teacher at Mizzurna High School. She’s Matthew’s and Emma’s homeroom teacher. Emma loved her like she was her own sister. She was one of the few people Emma could open up her heart to.

: I heard about Kathy.

: …

: Ms. Lidds… Do you think Kathy and Emma were together at the time?

: I don’t know…

: I wonder if there’s a connection between Kathy’s death and Emma’s disappearance…

: What do you mean?

: I don’t really know how to say it but she seemed to be struggling with something. That could be at the heart of this.

: You think she was worried about something?

: Well…

: I don’t really understand myself, it seemed like something rather abstract.

: I’m sorry. I really can’t be very specific.

: I’m heading back to the office.

Can these people express anything at all?

: Where can I find the books on philosophy?

Librarian: The wall adjacent to the hallway. Second bookcase from the right. But I’m not sure you can reach it.

Just like at the church we can just grab a box and get to it that way.

Is this the book Winona was talking about?

“The History of Philosophy”

There’s a bookmark on this page.

“Nothing exists, even if anything were to exist there would be no way of knowing, even if there was a way to know there would be no way to tell anyone else.”

This is kind of morbid. Maybe Emma read this…? I better ask James about this.

Good idea, Matthew. Let's go show James this later. Let's get something to eat, I bet Matthew is famished.

OH drat.

NNNGGGH.

Okay, we're good to go.

Heinds' Diner

There’s no Twin Peaks clone without its very own diner. We can eat here but as far as I’ve figured there’s no gameplay/dialogue value to be had from it.

: You look like you have your hands full.

: It’s not as bad as it could be.

Rolein Heinds: She’s a waitress at the diner. She very frank to everyone she talks to. She hangs around with Mell, though it’s hard to say they really fit each other.

: Is it true Emma is missing?

: Did you know Kathy?

: The girl who acted all buddy buddy with God right? Sure, I’ve seen her around. She was pretty much always by herself though.

: I think Kathy’s death and Emma’s disappearance are linked somehow.
: Were they friends?

: Possibly. Though as far as I knew they didn’t really mingle with each other.

: Well, if you talk to them they’re kind of alike aren’t they?

: Why do you say that?

: I don’t mean anything by it, just that they’re both girls you couldn’t really get a proper read on.

: …. Yeah I guess.

Mel enters the diner and takes a seat at the counter.

: What’s up? You look annoyed.

Mel Astin: Dennis’ only son. He’s kind of famous for being a delinquent. He snarls at everyone, trying to act tough.

: Whatever. Rolein, get off early and let’s go drink.

: I can’t. Dad isn’t working today, I’m the only one here.

: You live here, why the hell couldn’t you just shut the store and leave?

: I can’t do that either, I’ll get in trouble!

: Pft, you’re all the same.

: What happened?

: That fatass called me in this morning ‘cause he thinks I killed Emma or something.

: Are you talking about Morgan?

: That fatass… Just because I saw Emma last doesn’t mean I’m loving involved.

: Where did you see Emma?

: Heh?

: Where did you last see Emma?

: Hey, why the hell do I need to answer to you.

: I also saw Emma yesterday, I just want to know where she went after that.
: It’s none of your drat business.

: I also want to know! Where and when did you meet with Emma last night?

: What the hell are you thinking? I didn’t meet with her, I just saw her!

: Well, where then?

: For gently caress sake…

: Cokland Peaks. Just past the tunnel.

: Did you talk about anything?

: Not really. She just said she was heading for church.

: Church? Was she alone?

: Hey! Why don’t you just leave me alone!

: I don’t need to take this questioning.

: Are you heading back?

: I can’t loving breathe here.

: You guys know each other well, right?

: Well, everyone has their good side.

: What if Emma was heading to the church to meet up with Kathy?

: It looks like that’s the case.

: Right? There’s a good chance that they were together after all. `
: I wonder if there’s going to be another demonstration at Astin Farm.
: Demonstration? What for?

: You don’t know? The laborers are protesting against Dennis to rebuild their housings.

: Dennis? Mel’s dad?

: Yeah, you know that housing project in on Cokland Peaks?

: Oh yeah, that’s pretty old isn’t it.

: It’d be better if Dennis would just rebuild it.

: Astin Farm is just rolling in money after all.

: Anyway, you want something to eat?

Imagine we ate something for me, will you? Anyway, we can talk to some of the other customers.

Laborers: I can’t believe our boss. He’s not even acknowledging our demands.

It’s about time for the search. We won’t be able to participate, but at least we can ask Morgan for some more information. So let’s head to the forest entrance.

Barrow Forest

Deputy: You want to get in? Didn’t you hear? No one’s allowed at the moment since a bear got spotted.

Deputy: Pfft… I hate the cold. Can’t someone else stand here?

Looks like no one’s here yet though so we might as well wait outside for a bit.

There's our fatass!

: I heard Mel complaining that you were treating him like a suspect.

: Haha, I guess that’s about right.

: Is it true he told you he saw Emma heading for church last night?

: Yup, looks like there’s a good chance Emma and Kathy were together after all, huh.

: Do you think Mel was with them as well?

: Who knows. But I’m betting Mel is still hiding something important.

: Does he have an alibi?

: He said he was at the bar.

: Bar? You mean “Wolf’s”?

: He didn’t seem comfortable when we questioned him, but so far there’s been no inconsistencies. (?????)

: But there’s no way to know for sure at this stage.

This wasn’t actually the conversation we needed to have with him, but it’s good we’ve gotten that out of the way. If we follow him in we can get more info.

: I heard there were strangle wounds on Kathy’s neck…

: …

: Is that what you meant when you said there was something strange about Kathy?

: Yeah.

: Was Kathy murdered?

: Hmmm…

: Sammuel says the cause of her death is unrelated.

: The only thing we’re sure of is that there were bruises on her neck.

: But…

: Matthew, there’s no proof to turn this into a murder case just yet. We shouldn’t overreact.

: I guess…

And if we let him finish his walking animation we can talk to him yet again.

: Matthew, the forest is off-limits for now.

: Will there be a search now?

: Yeah.

: Let me help you!

: I can’t do that, Matthew. What if we come across a bear? This is no place for children.

: Matthew, I understand how you feel but just leave this matter to us.

Yeah, just keep enabling us from afar then.

Anyway, Morgan was rather clear about his suspicion of Mel so maybe we should give him a visit.

Oh right, there was a demonstration going on.

Laborers: Boss! We demand you listen to our demands!

Laborers: What the hell do you think of your workers? Rebuild our housings!

Laborers: He really doesn’t give a drat does he…

Labourer drat it. I never figured him for a tyrant.

: Are your houses that bad?

Laborers: It’s not like they were always bad, but nowadays the tap water often doesn’t run anymore and we get get power outages pretty much every day.

Laborers: These buildings are going on thirty years by now. No matter how well you maintain them you can’t keep them going forever.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but isn’t 30 years pretty okay for a house? This might be typical for Japan where the average house doesn’t even reach 30 years before they’re broken down. They pretty much lose all their value after 20 or 25 years. Then again, the houses these laborers live in are pretty small, as we’ll see later.

Laborers: Boss! Please rebuild our houses!

Dennis Astin: The boss of the Astin Farms grain mill. His business sustains Mizzurna Fall's economy, making him the town's most influential person. He's also Mel's father.

: Calm down! The buildings are regularly being maintained, aren't they?

Laborers: Boss! We're past the point of maintenance! The buildings themselves need to be replaced!

Laborers: We've worked hard for your company for several decades now.

: The soil just isn't suited for new buildings.

Laborers: Why is that? It gets dark at night and we occasionally see suspicious people wandering around.  It's just not a proper environment to live in.

: Either way, I can't just decide something like that on the spot. I'll examine the matter, so just go home for the day.

Laborers: Really?

: Yes, of course.

Laborers: Thank you!

The workers turn around and head back to their cars.

: I can't believe this.

Dennis faces Matthew.

: What's with you? You've got something to complain about as well? Well, I don't care.

Matthew, being the lobotomized bumpkin that he is, forgot to ask Dennis about Mel, so he walks up to the door and knocks.

: What? You got business with me?

: Excuse me, is Mel home?

: Mel? I don't have a clue where he is. Go check his room. It's around the corner there. drat it, I'm too busy to bother with you kids.

: You mean because of the housing problems?

: What's that got to do with you? If you need Mel, go check his room. Don't bother me again.

Dennis heads back inside, visibly annoyed by all the disturbances.

Around the back we find some stairs leading to a basement room. This is where Mel lives.

Matthew knocks at the door but there's no response.

: It doesn't look like there's anyone here.

Mel's Room

Mel's room is, as you'd expect, full of pictures of motorcycles and women.

The only thing out of the ordinary is a note on the table.

Huh? What's this?

The scribbled note reads " 9:00 pm motel".

Did Mel rent a motel room?

After pocketing the note, the sound of a motorcycle approaching startles Matthew.

: !?

: It's a motorcycle.

: It's got to Mel, I have to hide somewhere.

Looking around the place there's only one place to hide. The closet!

The phone starts ringing as we jump into the closet.

: …

: I loving know!

: I've dealt with the Emma thing. I have it now so quit yammering.

: Yeah.

: The 26th, 9 PM! I've told you, quit repeating yourself. The graveyard's fine, alright?

: Alright. I'll be there, we can talk then.

Mel hangs up the phone.

: gently caress that guy.

Suspiciously surly motorbike thug, huh? If they're riffing off Twin Peaks, he'll turn out to be a misunderstood sweetheart. I'm not convinced.
