somehow it still looks pretty good upsized by non-2x amounts even though that shouldn't be a thing. maple story sprite artists are wizards the outline is a bit wonky though

There are actually some methods specifically designed to upscale pixel art well. For example, here's one called XBR.  I set it to 2x scale and downscaled to avatar size (and mirrored it).   (Also had to cut most of the extra frames to fit the filesize limit.)
