On board sound card.

Reformatted my Windows 7 PC and have had crackling audio ever since. It seems to be a physical issue as pushing the cable into the jack a little bit on the back of my PC seems to fix it, but if my desk jiggles it starts crackling again. Again, seems like that is the problem, but just curious since all I did was reformat before it started happening. The USB ports on the same controller seem to work fine.

Pretty sure I installed the proper chipset drivers and no exclamation points in the device manager for sound.

So, I'll probably just buy a cheapo sound card since all I need is standard audio. I'm curious if someone can offer a suggestion as there are a ton of cheap options available on eBay but I'm not sure if getting some old unboxed Creative from China is a good idea.

Thoughts?

Did you install the latest drivers from the audio chipset manufacturer? If so,yes a new sound card would be a good idea, just get something not awful (and not Creative). The Parts Picking Megathread can give more specific advice if needed.

I went through the sound/audio section of the device manager and manually checked each object in there for more up to date audio drivers and Windows reported that I was up to date.

I have not done anything beyond that but plan on more trouble shooting tonight.

fucking stupid, dont listen to me
If pushing the cable in a bit and jiggling your desk fixes it/makes it worse, it might just be the cable you are using.

I thought about that and will double check by plugging the cable into my phone and seeing how that sounds.

Hope it isn't the cable because the other end is hard wired into my sub. :(

It slipped my mind, but interestingly enough, I also got a new LED monitor at the same time that has an audio out that jack and can pass audio via HDMI cable. Plugged into the monitor itself and problem solved.
