So, I've been fixing up broken/untested consoles lately. I've noticed that over 50% of these consoles have a loose, or solder fouled power plug assembly.

Be careful out there, gamers. Don't rake your loving consoles across the room by the plugs! Also, learn soldering because you can fix poo poo so stupidly easy if you're not a giant retard.

Good luck!

actually, a good sign of quality craftsmanship is to swing a console by its power cord. if it stays attached after 20 seconds of full swinging, it is a good console. i recommend doing this in a room with a lot of things in it, such as glass windows, vases, dishware, big screen televisions and infants

How to be good at soldering: 1. Use flux. 2. Use less than you think you need to because you're probably globbing way too much on.

You know they say that all demons are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Pyro Jack and you can see that statement is not true, hee-ho!
I bought a "broken" Sega CD from a thrift store a few years ago that just had a blown capacitive resistor near the power assembly. Snipped it off, soldered in a fuse holder, and popped in an equivalent fuse to fix it. Now I can play Sonic CD and Lunar. :)

it's like diving, you just hold your breath until you're done

that's why it's important to practice soldering

you should really have a method of dispersing fumes from soldering though, it is very stupid to huff lead/rosin.

Also I don't think lead poisoning causes cancer so if you're only worried about cancer it shouldn't be an issue.

OP how likely is it that a power surge would damage an older console compared 6 newer hardware with better power supplies?

lol nice name

I am honestly not sure but I would assume the newer gen consoles have PSU failsafes. Even still your ac adapter might just die instead.

I tested if my broken Xbox was getting power by touching two leads with a screwdriver and learned why we were told not to use that method to find out if something was live.
