nice, thats actually pretty cool u know of the seven principles (nguzo saba). they are all u really need to know. me and my adoptive parents used to light the candles every night and talk about what each principle meant to our family...
Umoja is unity, Kujichagulia is self determination, Umija is collective responsiblity, Ujamaa is collective economics, Nia is purpose, Kuumba is creativity, and imani is faith.
there three types of candles, a black candle that you put in the middle of the holder, three red candles you put to the left of the black one, and three green candles you put to the right. on the first night you light the black candle and discuss umoja, then the next night you light the closest red candle and discuss kujichagulia, the next night you light the closest green candle and discuss ujamaa, and so on and so forth.

this is exactly why i created this thread, ty tfp.

Q: when you talk about the principles are you supposed to apply them to your own life, or broader society, or both maybe?

your life, your family unit, and your community are traditionally the the focus of the discussion of the seven principles. at least in my family part of our discussion about the principles involved ways we could positively effect our community, and so talking about the 7 principles wrt society at large was kind of harder to do because it can be hard to try and think of ways we could effect society that didn't usually end up coming down to improving ourselves, our families, and our communities. imo discussing the principles and applying them to broader society should at least be attempted.

kwanzaa isn't necessarily a replacement for christmas. While yes, you can choose to give each other gifts, it doesn't necessarily mean that its an either or type of thing. my family and I would celebrate christmas, then starting the next day we would celebrate kwanzaa

was kwanzaa invented in the us or was it brought over from an african country by some of the slaves?

Rodatose

corn, corn, corn
invented in the 1960s with the rise of black nationalism. the guy who made it is still alive.

Rodatose

not that he shouldn't be, I just threw that in there to say how new it is

I remember back in grade school that they really briefly glazed over Kwanzaa as being a December holiday without getting into many details at all. I'm glad Fresh Prince has educated us, because honestly that sounds way more meaningful that basically all other holidays.
