i usually ctrl+s several times per line of code  but i normally only recompile after a few lines if it takes that many for a meaningful change with observable results

I check out the code, make a branch, type make, and then start making my changes. by the time I'm done it already built all or most of the project. then I type make again and fix the errors and the build only takes a few seconds. if I want to build all configs it can take over an hour so I let the build bot do that.
