I've heard that Nolan used complex algorithms based on real physics to achieve the look of Gargantua. Wrong! He used After Effects and Particular:

Seriously though I was messing around in AE one day and discovered a transition effect called CC Radial Scale Wipe. It distorts the image in a circle, similar to how a blackhole would, so I thought I try to see how far I could get with making Gargantua solely in After Effects. If anyone wants to tinker with the project file, you can download it here: http://www.nobodygetshurt.tv/misc/interstellar/interstellarBlackhole.aep. I used CS6 to increase compatibility for others.

I also created two global controllers for the effects (Echo Count and Particle Count), if you need to turn up or down the effects.

Tweak my file and make it better!
