I often forget about the sheer amount of work that goes into a movie (or TV show, or video game, or whatever) - and the wide variety of individual pieces that need to come together in order for it to work. Unfortunately, most people tend to judge a work as "good" or "bad" as a whole, without taking into account all of those separate pieces. From now on, whenever I see a movie that I dislike, I am trying to actively identify at least one thing about it that is good and worthwhile. Here are a few that I've come up with so far. The Last Airbender This movie was poorly acted, written, and directed. It whitewashed the casting of a racially-diverse source material, and managed to suck every ounce of whimsy and character development out of the cartoon it was based on. However, the prop, set, and costume designers really did an excellent job taking a cartoon and bringing it into the real world. The design was visually lush, and had an incredible amount of background detail and texture that made the settings and characters feel authentic. Cool As Ice This was a vehicle for Vanilla Ice in his heyday, so you know it's going to be hot garbage. Naturally, the story was dumb, and pretty much all of the performances were awful. However, it was competently shot, and had some truly nice-looking scenes. Turns out, the cinematographer was Janusz Kamiński, who went on to work on Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, among others. Also, I loved his doofy posse and the equally doofy mechanic who tries fixing their motorcycles, and the surreal set of the mechanic's repair shop. Frank Not a bad movie, but it really wasn't my cup of tea. However, I loved the original songs that Frank's band performed, and Michael Fassbender's performance was fantastically weird, and totally unidentifiable as him under the mask. Here's one of the better songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOt6ppIBOd4

Can we say cool things in otherwise terrible games, or is that more for the little things in games thread?

In the terrible Green Lantern movie, he shows up in costume to talk to his girlfriend (or ex or whatever she is in the movie) and she immediately recognizes him in his little domino mask.

I didn't much care for Charlie Wilson's War. I'm not a big Julia Roberts fan, and I didn't really like seeing Tom Hanks playing a guy who is kind of a creep. That said, I'll watch it every time I see it on, because Phillip Seymour Hoffman is loving fantastic in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ_4m2ocxhI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZXtCHoRb50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHNZUmdqdv8 AFewBricksShy has a new favorite as of 16:01 on May 22, 2015 |

I was surprised to hear that Constantine is a bad movie because the only parts I've seen are when Peter Stormare plays the devil. Peter Stormare is really good at stealing scenes (of course, upstaging Keanu Reeves can't be too difficult). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rVFse1LLQs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJgOxY_3qII

I really liked Constantine, and for people who liked the comics, I've heard that if you treat it as Constantine's American cousin it becomes enjoyable again. Even Shia LeBeauf was decent in it. Added to that Tilda Swinton and Stormare being awesome, it's a very enjoyable movie. Although I seem to be in a minority that likes Keanu Reeves.

There's a really good Bob Dylan song at the beginning of Watchmen. Since it's right at the beginning you can just shut the movie off when the song is over, or you can buy the mp3 on amazon or iTunes

There's like one half-second of competence in Shark Tale, and the father of the gay shark is a pretty good character who--if it were a Pixar film--would have been murdered instead of allowed to mend things with his doofy gay shark son. Also we can assume Jack Black had a good time on it because he came back to voice act in the absolutely incredible Kung Fu Panda. Otherwise it is a tornado of sucking, which cannot possibly be distilled better than in this .gif of a pufferfish: who was voiced by, and I am not loving with you here, Martin Scorsese.

Turok Evolution is a bad game. It looks and feels like it was released halfway through development. But the weapons that you use to wreck the dinosaurs and lizardmen are crazy and satisfying. The final boss is a General Custer stand-in riding a T-Rex armed with flamethrowers. It also has one of my favourite game soundtracks too. Fit perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veVarpGfQdo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LruKZlkOeZ8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE-jnTEe3Ps

Episode 1 Racer was awesome. I remember the asteroid base (?) level where there's a big jump and you have to control your pod in low gravity for a decent stretch. Speaking of Star Wars games, The Phantom Menace game was really bad, but being able to run around Mos Espa on your own and potentially kill everyone you meet was a surprise. I think it's possible to get into a failed game state if you kill enough people that Anakin refuses to help you.

Hector vs Achilles duel in TROY one of the best fights randomly dropped in the middle of a pile of crap movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80SsC_ZNbyI And the scene immediately after that, its like they were lifted out of a way better movie One reason its awesome is that up till now all of Achilles fights have lasted about 2 seconds, and Hector comes out and pushes him, love Brad Pitts facial expressions of surprise and confusion Supreme Allah has a new favorite as of 23:50 on May 22, 2015 |

My favourite bits of bad movies are the overactors who are being well-paid for this poo poo movie and just having a whale of a time chewing the scenery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zu1YIukylw Anybody seen Richie? This scene is great, and the rest of the movie and Steve's career is awful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FAkFepEuVk The intro to the first Wolverine movie. Liev Shrieber is legitimately the only good part about it beyond that. The bit in The Hulk when Tim Roth runs ahead of all of the other soldiers with his superhuman abilities, giving everyone a hint about how cool it'd be to see Captain America on screen. E: Raul Julia in Street Fighter. He did it for his kids, he was dying, and he is the absolute best part of it. Firstborn has a new favorite as of 04:22 on May 23, 2015 |

The CGI in Shark Boy And Lava Girl was on par with an Eiffel 65 music video (it came out in 2005) and the acting was extremely wooden. But the kid who played the bully was obviously having the time of his life. Lois and Clark is a hilariously bad show. But it has the best Perry White. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqJzPjjpAqI I've only seen the trailer, and the movie looks like complete garbage. But "shoot him, he is the vampire" is a solid joke, even if they ruin it a second later. Skip to about 2:08. Please do not watch this entire trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGqYpl0DiWc
